CN 4534 and CN 4533 round the bend through Bayview Junction. They are about to exit the Dundas Subdivision and head towards Aldershot. On the right of the photo is a couple of young railfans...perhaps they could Mr. Adeney and Mr. Mooney? This photo is from my Great Grandfather Charles Bishop's collection.

A rather impressive lash-up of 4-axle MLWs is about to pop under highway 401 just east of Newcastle and hold the main through Lovekin siding on the CP Belleville Sub.

GP38-2s 1809 and 1800 lead the last Northlander along its final miles of home rails north of Feronia. The Northlander served the people of northern Ontario for 35 years before being withdrawn from service on September 28th, 2012.

Via Rail #1 - Canadian - powered by ex CP Rail FP7-A #1424 ( ex CP Rail 4068 ? ) - GP9 8520? ( future 1601 ) - Via Rail #14xx passes the ONR North Bay shops where the spare ONR Northlander train set and the ONR auxillary are stored. #1 is on the approach to the CP Rail North Bay station with a scheduled 18:30 arrival.

[ What's interesting: #1424 is on display at Medicine Hat; The second car behind the baggage is crew dormitory ex CN twenty four roomette sleeping car I series ( #2000 Indigo to #2019 Ituna ) built 1950.
1980 was final summer for the Canadian's Montreal morning departure: Trains #1 & 2 - Canadian - operated on CP Rail Montreal to /from Vancouver ( 3 nights ) via Banff; The September 29 1980 Via schedule for #1 became a Montreal evening departure with the North Bay arrival at 04:45 ( #5 a late night Toronto departure ) the first FOUR night schedule to/from Vancouver ( likewise for the Super C ). ] July 12, 1980 Kodachrome by S.Danko.

CN C772 is just about completed its cross country travel from the coal mines in northern Alberta to the coal terminal on the shore of Lake Superior. CN 2558 and CN 5800 guide the coal loads across the Jack Knife bridge while a flock of Canadian Geese take their morning bath in the Kaministiquia River.

In this bucolic scene TTC 412, with its headlight lens swinging in the breeze, is southbound for Toronto immediately north of Centre Street in Thornhill. Motor car traffic does not seem to be a problem on this Wednesday afternoon. Down in the valley behind 412 two golf courses were, and still are, located on either side of Yonge Street. Apart from the widening of the road to four clogged lanes, this scene is not all that different today. Closure of the North Yonge line came only four days after the photo was taken.

Canadian Pacific train No. 409 curves through Mink Tunnel along the spectacular shoreline of Lake Superior at Coldwell, Ontario. In my notebook from 1993, it says it was a one hour climb up to this viewpoint, and another hour down; and I was a lot younger back then too!

The Northlander curves through Mount Albert as it rides the red blocks of CN 316. A lot of clear to stop signals allows one to get ahead of the train for a few bonus shots on the south end of the Bala. 1815hrs.

Retired in late 2001, LRC Locomotive #6917 was given a new lease on life during the summer of 2010 when it was saved from the scrapper's torch by efforts from the Toronto Railway Historical Association. The unit currently sits at VIA's Toronto Maintenance Centre where it is lovingly worked on by a dedicated team of volunteers. The eventual plan is to have the locomotive cosmetically restored and in operating condition, potentially in service on a tourist line. See: http://www.trha.ca/LRC/ for more information. I remember when the F59's were boring. They still are, but less so than the MP40's that have largely replaced them. Two holdouts, bobtailed 561 and 562 power a westbound train through Pickering, Ontario. 1303hrs.
