The wind swept pine. Try as it might to grow straight the wind would not let it. Similarly, the wind that prevented this tree from growing straight has in it's grips eastbound freight M344 as the lengthy and tonnage stricken train struggles to gain speed as it departs Winnipeg's Symington Yard.

Work horses of a different time. We are in Mennonite country and these people work their fields like so many did at the turn of 20th century. Here a farmer plows his field with 6 horses, meanwhile in the background the crew of the Ontario Southland continues its journey west to St. Thomas along the Cayuga Sub with a combined 2400 horses at the hoggers finger tips. Doubtful he will have to unleash them all, for too long anyway as they only have two cars in tow. The hopper from Courtland, the tank from Tillsonburg.

With OCS clearance in hand from Mile 12 to Gretna Spur Track Switch with a protect against one foreman, "The Altona", CP 2313 West rolls due south (timetable west), clearing the "Perimeter Highway" enroute to Altona, Manitoba. On a clear prairie day where the mercury is hovering around -30C a trail of exhaust hangs in the air as the crew navigate the last few miles of non-Main Track territory. Shortly they would be notching up to track speed (30 MPH), however the Rule 43 green flag protecting a slow order right at the begin/end main track will hamper their efforts for getting up to track speed.

Westbound (in actuality southbound) P03-20, "The Altona" rolls through the small southern Manitoba town of Domain, located along Provincial Road 330. With 47 cars in tow, none of which are for the local elevator, GP20C-ECO's 2217 and 2325 have their train in hand as they hustle along at track speed.

Rolling above the Pembina Highway, BNSF GP39-3 leads a lengthy drag of cars ex BNML trackage to the west and into CN's Fort Rouge yard. CN will haul the traffic south to interchange with BNSF at Emerson,MB/Noyes, Minnesota.

Mornings in Thunder Bay were very rewarding. CN's daily freight usually arrived around dawn and their trek across town to Port Arthur would have the sun positioned perfectly for photography. On this early August morning A436's power scoots across the glass-like McIntyre River with CN SD75i 5690-SD60F 5518-GP9 Slug 229-GP9RM 7268 with darn near a perfect reflection.

Remembrance Day 2011,...... 11/11/11. A day to remember the soldiers who fought for our freedoms and paid the ultimate price. Trackside, a CN crew is nearing the end of their tour with a trio of old soldiers in their own right. CN SD60F's 5552-5539-5529 haul Port Arthur bound grain through roughly the old station grounds in Westfort. Down in Port Arthur another set of SD60F's (5551-5522) were playing on an extra yard pulling and later spotting the elevators. The SD60F's still had a few years left, but they seemed to call on Thunder Bay in droves through the 2011 grain season.

An eventful Halloween of chasing the Goderich and Exeter subdivisions showcased the pinnacle of fall weather. Sun, rain and snow showers. With the temperature hovering around the freezing mark and a brisk wind blowing off Lake Huron GEXR had a "record" train length for the Exeter sub. After working Clinton and Hensall, the crew with RLK 2211 and LLPX 2236 headed south to the end of track with 17 cars for P&H in Centralia. Not a common practice to see that many cars destined for P&H at one time would result in some extra work for the crew to get the cars on the right end of the engine to spot, with the only available siding to run around the cars at a capacity of 9 car lengths. The crew would essentially have to run around the train twice, with a push-pull operation taking place in the middle of their moves. The longer siding onsite was taken out of service years ago and can been seen rusting in the weeds beside the old feed mill. Here the units are captured nosing out the north end of the "9 car siding" after making their final run around move to spot cars to the elevator. This part of the line has since been embargoed, with freights no longer running south of Exeter.

Rolling across the old swing bridge over the Kaministiquia River, utilizing power off the nights road freight from Fort Frances of SD60F 5527 and GP40-2wl 9525, the 07:30 Neebing Yard crew has grain loads for Mission Terminals Ltd and Cargill on the drawbar. There duties will be pull and spot the elevators and may have had a switch at the Bowater Sawmill, all located at the end of the spur.<br><br>This bridge is a rail/ road bridge, built by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1906. A contract was signed between the GTP and the Corporation of the Town of Fort William and a sum of $50,000 dollars was given to the railway. In return the municipality gained "the perpetual right to cross said bridge for street railway, vehicle and foot traffic on roadways supported by brackets on each side of the railway bridge." On October 29, 2013 the bridge burned, repairs were made to continue rail traffic but the bridge has since remained close to vehicle and pedestrian traffic due to a dispute between CN and the City of Thunder Bay determining who is responsible to pay for repairs. The issue had been taken to court and in June 2017 a judge ruled CN does not have to fix the bridge. The dispute continues as in August 2017 Thunder Bay appealed the decision. This is the most direct link for people commuting between the City and the Fort William First Nation.

How do you make a train look small? Visit places like British Columbia! CP ES44AC's 8774 and 8831 work an aluminum set of coal loads up Notch Hill, through the open valley fields east of Sorrento, BC. Half way back another GE assists on the trains final major accent through the mountains.

As if this site need more images from these guys... The Ontario Southland Railway gets a lot of attention from railfans far and wide. And for good reason! <br><br>When the opportunity arose that I was able to meet up with my good friend and rp.ca contributor Kyle Stefanovic, I'm sure both of our wives knew what we had up our sleeves. After all it may be nice to introduce our little families to each other but with OSR nearby with their eclectic roster of locomotives its near impossible not to venture outside, regardless of temperature/ weather! With sets of grumpy kids, compromises were made, a daughter each came with to get them out of the house. The drive would settle the "little terrorists" and at the end of our adventure we caught up with the Woodstock Job switching the little yard. For my final shot I went for an angle that is familiar to me and will try continue to perfect in any future visits: The corner of the Woodstock depot framing OSRX GP9u 1620 pausing during switching as a passing line of snowsqualls slowly let up at dusk. <br><br>

The C40-8W's were still relatively new to CN rails and it didn't take long for a number of them to become captive on the Thunder Bay runs. Here we see CN 2170 (leading CN 2102 and a couple dozen grain hoppers after setting out most their train in Neebing yard) past the Alba station name sign; which signifies the east end of Neebing yard and the switch for the CN Mission Spur. The crew will run across town, tie down the balance of their train, park the power (likely on the east leg of the Port Arthur wye) and call it a day.

In a scene inspired from John Hardy's <I> Rusty Rails</I>, I captured the ol' <I>"Pride of Orangeville"</I> and crew returning to Orangeville north of Snelgrove, approaching Old School Road. In Mr. Hardy's book he captured a pair of CP MLW's along with a leased VIA F40PH-2 6452 leading a caboose hop north on the then CP Owen Sound Sub in late December 1994. The book is a great read for anyone wishing to learn more about the the branches in mid-western Ontario, from construction to abandonment.

After a crew change, the Kam Sub crew pulls down the Canada 150 train to load a few privileged people onto the train for the trip eastward. Note the empty space between the mainlines here, this was where the old depot in Ignace use to be, before it was torn down.

CP ES44AC 8774 and NS C40-9W 9440 -with an American crew aboard- start train 298 on its trip south, rumbling through St. Boniface with a crew change destined at Thief River Falls, Minnesota. This practice has since been stopped arbitrarily due to collective bargaining differences. Canadian crews out of Winnipeg once again run down to Emerson to crew change with Thief River crews.

A miserable and wet morning in White River, Ontario finds Ontario's Budd's departing for Sudbury. RDC4 6250 and RDC-2 6215 are assigned the honours for the trip to Sudbury, while in the background train 112-18 sits staged awaiting a crew to come available to take the train east. <br>During this time CP crews based out of Chapleau operated the passenger between White River and Sudbury. A couple years later VIA crews would take over the run to operate the train from the CP crews.

Regional forest fires cover the north in a smoky haze as Thunder Bay bound grain train blasts its 14L for the Highway 11 crossing just west of the small hamlet of Shebandowan.<br>
<I>Of note: This was the first DPU'd train CN ran on the Kashabowie. I can't recall the number of cars but I believe it was in the neighbourhood of 150-160 cars. An absolute monster! And this practice today has become common on bulk trains into the Lakehead, some pushing this threshold in the 200+ car total. Power CN ES44DC 2236- CN SD50F 5459 with CN ES44DC 2267 pushing on the rear</I>

One for Mr. Mooney and the other station lovers out there.<br><br> Now relocated south of Thunder Bay just off Hwy 61 at the Founder's Museum and Pioneer Village, the old CP Upsala station survives next to the ugliest choice of yellow for CP van 434458.

It's a warm and hazy evening in the valley, the final rays of the day glints of the snow capped peaks around Golden as CP 9529 West pauses to fuel after beating the Kicking Horse. It's next challenger: Rogers Pass. In the background on one of the yard tracks CP 8637 West sits awaiting its crew after switching downtown.
