![Back when the Ontario Northland's Kapuskasing Sub was run at a snails pace, a dance would play out around the noon hour every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A crew ex Cochrane (514) would meet the Hearst crew (516) to lift each others traffic back to their respected terminals, minus any local traffic for the Tembec paper mill. From what I remember the stretch east of Kapuskasing was in much rougher shape, while the tracks west were in better shape and allowed faster track speed, no doubt due to the traffic hauled out of the Agrium plant (south)west of town. As of 2022, the entire line has been restored to a much more respectable speed, with more infrastructure upgrades being completed. A crew called ex Cochrane Monday/Wednesday/Friday will make the entire round trip in one day now. With the closure of the Agrium plant in 2013 the Hearst based crew's job got significantly lighter but they are still called 5 days a week to sort the traffic that comes up off the CN Soo Sub as well as service the local industries.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/DSC_1040-200x150.jpg)

![A cool, foggy morning at Kidd, finds the recently arrived crew of Ontario Northland 207 in the midst of working the yard at Kidd. The conductor hangs off a gondola of ore concentrate, guiding his engineer into the joint with a lone tank car left on the main. Once together he will line the north wye switch normal before guiding the movement another four miles further down the line to switch the Ineos Calabrian plant.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/DSC_4130-200x150.jpg)

![To me it's still hard to believe that the OSR no longer serves the Royal City. To me the OSR and the GJR were interchangeable. Alas, their relationship began to disintegrate and some 22 years after their initial contractual obligation was signed it was over, effective August 28, 2020. I post this view of OSR during their days of grandeur. A late arrival into Guelph with RS-18u 180 and RS-23 505 evade the shadows of the nearby W.C. Wood factory, having just finished servicing the Owens Cornings Fibreglass plant off York Road. They are continuing working their way to Guelph's industrial end, complete with their old CP Angus van. These were the days, vintage power run with a van bringing up the markers. If I only appreciated this sight at the time.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_4375-200x150.jpg)

![It's been 15 years since I caught my last plow train and when word slipped OSR was running one down the old Port Burwell I found it hard to believe. We had only received maybe 10 cm of snow in the area. Hardly enough in my mind for a plow run to be worth it. Low and behold a drive over to Salford early in the morning revealed OSR crews having readied the plow with their pair of F units. There were sections of the track that had drifted over the railhead and I tried to seek a location that had potential for some good action but at bay from other photographers. My first shot of the day came a few miles south of Salford as the engineer aboard 6508 accelerated plow 401005 into a mildly drifted section of the sub. Goes to show you don't need a lot of snow to come out with a decent action shot of a plow.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/DSC_4831-2-200x150.jpg)

![Central Frame. Framed in the walkway of the Central Ave bridge, an afternoon extra works Port Arthur with a pair of newly acquired Dash 8's of different lineage. CN 2170, formerly BNSF 817 and CN 2102 formerly UP 9067 which worked Fort Frances to Thunder Bay train A436 earlier that morning and are being used on a yard extra to pull and spot the elevators in the Intercity area of Thunder Bay as well build the train they will power later that night. As new GEVO orders have come been fulfilled, the Dash 8 numbers have dwindled a little over a decade after CN purchased them.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/DSC_2898-200x150.jpg)

![Returning from their morning run along the Goderich, the crew of X518 waits just short distance from the switch to enter the Guelph Sub at Cowie. After waiting for VIA 85 to complete their station stop and continue west, they will pull up to the station to get their orders to continue their day- plowing the Guelph Sub west towards St. Mary's and London. A memorable day that was almost 15 years ago... sheeesh.

![I've been hearing word that the old plow in Stratford is in rough shape, and unlikely to be used anytime soon (if not again). However it's not likely they'll be needing it the weather keeps going the way it is (currently +4C and raining mid way thru December). I offer up this goodie of better times. The crew of plow extra X518 has stopped in Seaforth for a coffee and bit of "housecleaning". A large amount of heavy, wet snow has accumulated in the doorways and walkways of the locomotives, this stop will provide some relief to additional snow build up during their assault on the remainder of the Goderich Sub. Power for the run was LLPX 2210-RLK 4001-HLCX 6091.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/DSC_6996-200x150.jpg)

![Having completed their early morning run up the Goderich, Conductor Snook entrains RLK 4096 as the plow movement continues its forward progressing towards the west end of the yard. Sooner than anticipated, regularly scheduled freight GEXR 581 will arrive at Goderich with its usual string of empties for the salt mine. RLK 4096 would be left switched off this plow extra and onto 581 to lift while the plow extra would return eastward with just RLK 4001 to Stratford.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/DSC_6224-200x150.jpg)

![The midnight Bowater job is tied down in "East Yard" at the Abitibi-Bowater paper mill. A late night servicing the paper and kraft sheds plus perhaps some congestion in Westfort has led the midnight job to tie down at the mill and taxi back to the Westfort shack to tie up. Days will have their hands full as they will have to run in midnights pull to the yard before beginning to deal with their daily chores of switching the paper shed, Erco Worldwide (chemical plant) and the Kraft shed. Power was the familiar GP9u combo 1571-1629.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/DSC_5369-200x150.jpg)

![Arrival in the Festival City. GEXR 433 arrives from London with a pair of leased CN SD40-2W's 5244-5277. During this era GEXR still interchanged with CN at London yard and with word that the CN units were being utilized drew me down to Stratford to snap what I could of CN units on the former CN lines. ![Boats are seen resting along one of the many docks lining Portage Bay on gorgeous Lake of the Woods in downtown Keewatin. The peace and serenity of the scene is broken by the reverberation of westbound train 119-16, skirting the man made shoreline. Having just received their results of their outbound pull by inspection at the crew change point in Kenora, the crew is getting the train up to track speed. Along their journey they will see a pair of back to back eastbound hotshots (100-16 and 118-16) somewhere in the middle of the Keewatin Sub before proceeding onto Winnipeg to essentially set off half their train and lift just as much traffic west for Edmonton.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/DSC_4592-200x150.jpg)
