![An overview of the west end of CP's North Yard at Kenora- once a fairly steady yard filtering cars for the local industries in town and along the line, now downgraded to storage only finds a work train tied down in track one with a loaded GREX "Slot Train" and an eclectic lash up of CMQ 9020-CP 5875- CP 6011- CP 6225- CP 6031 with CN ES44AC 3866 rounding out the consist. The crew will be called later in the evening in the failing light to double up track ten consisting of the GREX "Dump Train" plus a couple bulkhead flats before doubling onto the waiting empty IMS spine seen at the west end of track eleven, departing west for Winnipeg soon after. Over in track nine the tailend of a partially unloaded eastbound Herzog train bound for Dyment Pit (for reload) can be seen- it had the recently repainted/ re-stenciled CP 9022 with CP 6054....](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/DJI_0062-200x150.jpg)

![Whenever the Ontario Northland comes to mind I think Chevrons, boxcars and those uniquely stylized flanger signs. This image checks those boxes. It's nearing the end of the day on Monday, October 4, 2010 and 414's crew is lifting 27 AbitibiBowater paper loads off the Iroquois Falls Subdvision. When the crew left Englehart that morning they only had the solo SD75i 2100 and a paltry 8 cars (7 destined for Iroquois Falls). Leaving Cochrane in the evening with a much larger train and veteran SD40-2 1737 added for the influx of southbound tonnage the train will be over 70 cars ex "Welsh" (Porquis Junction). This may seem like a lot of traffic but it's just a backlog of traffic due to service reductions following the 2008 recession. ONR hadn't visited in a number of days as 213/414's crew would only make the run north to Cochrane twice a week. AbitibiBowater later restructured into todays "Resolute Forest Products" and shuttered the mill in late 2014.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/DSC_9246water-200x150.jpg)

BNSF SD70MAC 9413. Having unloaded rail on the Keewatin, the crew is eastbound approaching Kenora for more paperwork to head out onto the Ignace Sub to dump another string of rail before tying up for the night in the back track at Hawk Lake.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/DJI_0057-200x150.jpg)

This days consist is made up of hoppers for Tupperville and 3 tanks for Sombra. ![Normally by this time of year we have seen shots of CP's Holiday Train as it travels across Canada. 2021 marked the second year in a row of it's annulment due in thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic cancelling its tour through Canada and the States. However CP did hold another virtual Holiday Train, streamed live from their Ogden HQ in Calgary on December 18th. I offer up this image from a couple years ago of the Holiday Train rolling into their stop at Kenora, Ontario as people gather for the free concert and more importantly, donations to local food banks. Here's to hoping see a return in 2022.

GP9u's CP 8201 and STLH 8245 are (timetable) eastbound with 4 loaded frame cars ex Formet in St Thomas destined for the Oshawa GM plant. Bringing up the rear is a hopper destined for Putnam which has been towed the length of the line and back. The crew will set it off and lift five before returning to Woodstock.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/DSC_9491-200x150.jpg)

![With the final chapter closing on this rail line, it's time to take a look back through it's era's. My run in's with this line came during the "Cando Era" throughout the early 2000's. Little did I know at the time this would be my last time chasing the line and my last time catching the old girl powering a train along the line. In this image CCGX GP9 1000 is approaching Olde Baseline Road crossing just south of the hamlet of Inglewood, rolling through the Caledon Country Club on it's northbound journey back to Orangeville.

CCGX 1000 would be replaced by GP9RM 4009 later this summer and made her final run November 1, 2008 heading up the northbound run of a Credit Valley Explorer excursion. She would be put into storage for a couple years before being reactivated working a spur line in Bath, Ontario. After her retirement she was sent to the CEMR deadline in Winnipeg, MB where she continued to languish until being scrapped in December 2021.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/DSC_8496-200x150.jpg)

While seemingly a bright and colourful livery, it reflects on a dark period of Canadian history. Released on the first "National Day for Truth and Reconciliation" on September 30, 2021 it will roam the rails, bringing awareness about the atrocities that unfolded for years at residential schools across Canada.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/DSC_3548-3-200x150.jpg)

![A desolate and eerie calm hangs over what was once a steady divisional point at Hawk Junction. The station seems all but abandoned. The unkept station platform has weeds and moss growing along the building where baggage carts once waited to aid in loading and unloading at train time, rocks and glass litter the rest. The only tenants now are the yellow jackets nesting underneath one of the green light fixtures. Isolated showers pass through the area. The mood is solemn. Barely even a chirp from main reservoir from the parked locomotive out front. These late summer days in 2021 see little action. No thru freights run anymore between Hearst and Sault Ste. Marie and the "Tour of the Line" passenger is six years removed from operating. Still being the home terminal for the few remaining former ACR employees, the crew will go on duty in the evening Tuesdays and Thursdays at Hawk, running light up to Oba to lift their traffic for Hearst and perhaps have cars destined for log loading, returning Wednesday and Fridays ex Hearst. They setoff their traffic in the yard at Oba before returning to Hawk Junction- again, usually light power. Although the sale of the line has been agreed upon, pending regulatory approval, these waning days of CN's ownership look bleak.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/DSC_3085-200x150.jpg)

![They weren't the best of times but they were certainly better than how they are now found along the former Algoma Central in 2021. The southbound passenger, labelled as the "Tour of the Line" train has arrived at Hawk Jct and is taking on a couple passengers while a couple detrain. It's a busy few moments as totes and coolers are unloaded from the baggage car. On the paved platform a number of baggage carts take up real estate, being as inviting and patient as possible for any guests. One may end up being used to rest any waiting luggage, fishing or hunting gear.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/DSC_8878-200x150.jpg)

![High above the Deerfoot Trail, a CP job with GP9u's 1647 and 1567 complete with an old van, is beginning their descent to the mainline past the Calgary Herald, having completed their days task along this industrial trackage known as the M Lead, which branches off the Red Deer Sub at Zoo. It is quite the dip down to the mainline... That's the top of the codeline in the foreground!

On a side note, I found my self checking out recent satellite and street view images of the area and this trackage seems to be unused and abandoned. ![Genesee and Wyoming having threatened to shutter the entire line between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie and suspending operations for a brief amount time (can't remember the exact amount, a week- maybe two?) re-appears at the Domtar mill in Espanola to switch the plant. It seems every 10 years or so the American company lobbies the Provincial and Federal governments for millions of dollars in grants to keep up with maintenance threatening to permanently close the line, having done so again in 2020, reaching another successful resolution in May 2021.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/DSC_6436-200x150.jpg)

![Ignace Yard. Just a shell of it's former self. It's main job these days can see the loading and unloading of supplies for ES (ties, tie plates, anchors, etc), car storage and to facilitate the rock trains which come and go from Dyment Pit 37 miles to the west. So I suppose this picture sums it's purpose up perfectly. A "Box Train" (grain empties) has been yarded in the north yard, while in the south yard a solo gondola loaded with ties sits beside a Herzog train fresh in from "The Pit", having been yarded in track 1 and showcasing the eclectic GMD trio of CP 9014- CP 3649- CP 5866.

Of note, you may notice the white haze on the horizon. That is smoke from the reported 76 fires that were burning across the district, within 3 weeks that number would sky rocket to over 120 fires. This year has been incredibly dry across most of western and central Canada and into the northwest region of Ontario. Prayers to all those affected by the fires.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/DJI_0124-200x150.jpg)

![GEXR meets OSR in Waterloo? It happened. Goderich and Exeter local No. 584 is returning from Elmira passing "Tar Baby" who was leased to the Waterloo Central in the summer of 2007 for their operations. Here she rests in the siding, coupled to WCR's mix of passenger equipment next to the "new" Waterloo station built for the upstart Waterloo-St Jacob's Railway a decade prior. To say this area has undergone a major facelift, would be an understatement. The WCR hasn't been based out of Waterloo in years, relocating their base up the line to St Jacob's after the ION light rail project moved in, forever changing this scene.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/DSC_1584-200x150.jpg)
