<b>Vestiges of the BN.</b> Burlington Northern insignia still adorns the yard office in Winnipeg at the corner of Taylor Ave and Lindsay Street. Looking beyond, an unusual visitor sits north of the shop in form of SD75i 292. Odd to see such a big unit in this neck of the woods as this operation is normally home to a single 4 axle engine.

Bound for Tupperville, D924 rolls over Langstaff Line passing Serrka Farms just north of Wallaceburg, Ontario. If you were to pass by here today you would find a weed choked right of way, still complete with rails. Serrka Farms has since razed their silo's near the tracks and built new ones on the opposite side of the property.

Vintage GP9, CCGX 1000 ("The Pride of Orangeville") has cut off it's train on the main an is nosing into the industrial spur(s) at the west end of town to begin their switching maneuvers. This location was the climax of the famous Tim Horton's commercial filmed during 2001 which aired during the 2002 Winter Olympics, where the train crew pulled up to the nearby Tim Hortons (just out of frame to the right) to grab their coffee.

The midnight Bowater job is tied down in "East Yard" at the Abitibi-Bowater paper mill. A late night servicing the paper and kraft sheds plus perhaps some congestion in Westfort has led the midnight job to tie down at the mill and taxi back to the Westfort shack to tie up. Days will have their hands full as they will have to run in midnights pull to the yard before beginning to deal with their daily chores of switching the paper shed, Erco Worldwide (chemical plant) and the Kraft shed. Power was the familiar GP9u combo 1571-1629.

<i>Arrival in the Festival City.</i> GEXR 433 arrives from London with a pair of leased CN SD40-2W's 5244-5277. During this era GEXR still interchanged with CN at London yard and with word that the CN units were being utilized drew me down to Stratford to snap what I could of CN units on the former CN lines. Little did I know at the time that CN would take back the Guelph Sub in less than 10 years.

About to duck under Highway 17 at Markstay, Ontario and showcasing its obvious CN heritage, RMPX GP40-2W 9426 leads another former CN unit in RLK GP40 4096 and 39 cars bound for Sudbury. RMPX 9426 would be overhauled at the ONR shops in North Bay in 2013 and released in 2014, painted in corporate G&W colours and re-lettered and re-numbered for the Ottawa Valley Railway as OVR 3029.

Gorgeous, rugged beauty- summertime in Kenora. CPKC 2/421-16 with CP 8535-KCS 4163 snakes its way out of town, seen rolling over Tunnel Island on the north track, crossing over both inflows of the Winnipeg River where they meet the vast Lake of the Woods.

Boats are seen resting along one of the many docks lining Portage Bay on gorgeous Lake of the Woods in downtown Keewatin. The peace and serenity of the scene is broken by the reverberation of westbound train 119-16, skirting the man made shoreline. Having just received their results of their outbound pull by inspection at the crew change point in Kenora, the crew is getting the train up to track speed. Along their journey they will see a pair of back to back eastbound hotshots (100-16 and 118-16) somewhere in the middle of the Keewatin Sub before proceeding onto Winnipeg to essentially set off half their train and lift just as much traffic west for Edmonton.

Southbound Kidd to Englehart freight 308 passes the quaint, old station in the village of Matheson, Ontario built in 1910. With the anticipated reinstatement of the Northlander in the coming years the building still looks to be in good condition. According to the "Northeastern Passenger Rail Service Updated Initial Business Case" document the station will once again be a stop for the train, requiring only some minor upgrades including a new shelter and platform paving.

CN train 701 coke train has just completed dumping and is secured awaiting a crew to take it back west (then south). Trains 701/702 began running north to Thunder Bay in 2017 and have been a fairly regular fixture ever since. Due to it's start on the UP in Minnesota it's a guarantee to have foreign power. This days visitor had NS 9722-NS 4398 along with UP 1111- UP's "Employee Pride Locomotive".

In September 2011 Ford would close their St Thomas assembly plant, ceasing 44 years of producing cars in Elgin County. A little more than two years prior to the closure, on a quiet Monday morning I found CN GP9RM's 4134-4140 resting outside the yard office at Talbotville awaiting their next call to service at the nearby plant.

Having stood down for an eastbound CN freight and the westbound Canadian, a westbound CEMR crew destined for their Carman Sub operation, utilizing SD40-2W 5310 and SD40-2 5396 with 9 gons in tow put on a bit of a show sending plumes of diesel exhaust into the sky at the west end of CN's Fort Rouge yard.

It's train time at Hawk. The southbound "Tour of the Line" passenger train arrives, guided by a crew member who is standing in the front vestibule of the lead coach. Sitting in the next track over in the yard is northbound freight 571 awaiting their freight crew to come on duty with the solo SD40-2W 5277. The final "Tour of the Line" operated in 2015- which at that time was ran by Railmark crews. During 2021, Watco would put in an offer to purchase the line from Sault Ste. Marie to Oba (as well as various other branches in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) and as of February 1, 2022 would commenced operations as the "Agawa Canyon Railroad". They currently switch freight mostly in the Sault Ste Marie area and operate the Agawa Canyon Tour train in the fall. But the tracks from Canyon thru Hawk and up to Oba have, as far as I know remained silent ever since. There was hope the passenger would start up again... time will only tell.

Accelerating out of Thunder Bay, the era's "Switcher" rolls over Neebing Ave westbound with work at locations like Dryden, Vermilion Bay, Trus Joist and Kenora. <br><br>

A number of things here have changed in the years since this shot. <br><br>

First off, the SD90Mac trailing disappeared the year after this photo was taken- only to languish for about decade before being rebuilt into an SD70ACu. The "farm leads" loaded with boxcars for the local paper mill were taken our of service and the tracks removed in the coming years, while the smoke stack from the local OPG plant puffing away here, came down sometime in 2021. Progress.....

Having completed their switch at Owens Corning Fibreglass, Ontario Southland Conductor Mercer rides the footstep in anticipation of his next task, flagging vehicular traffic approaching the crossing on York Road. Those SHPX hoppers looked so clean in the first decade of the 21st Century. Compare it to this shot by <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=44686"> Mr. Host</a> over a decade later, they have really got their "tan" on.

Thunder Bay to Fort Frances freight CN 437 is making good time through the small town of Kakabeka Falls with a duo of veteran cowls in the lead. Passing the razed station site of the station, replaced with a mundane shack used for MoW employees decked out in that lovely beige siding. The double station name signs framing both sides of the main herald back to better times with this section of right of way was double tracked. For those keeping track power was behind the lead SD60F was sister CN 5533. Behind them, a pulp car destined for pulp load out at the back track at Annex.

A busy scene at the elevator in Tupperville, Ontario. Grain dust fills the air as a transport takes on a load of area grain. The conductor of D924 has bent the iron to gain access to the last customer serviced by CSX on the former C&O Sub 2 south of Sarnia to exchange the four grain loads with four empties. CSX ceased service through here in October 2013 and the rails have remained silent ever since.

The westbound Huron Central freight is seen approaching McKerrow with HCRY GP40-3 3802, HCRY RM-1 802, QGRY GP38 2008 and HCRY GP40-2LW 3013 hauling 131 cars. The "above average" length of this freight was due to G&W shuttering operations in the weeks prior as they were looking for a handout from the government in the range of $30 million to upgrade and upkeep the tracks. With terms agreed to, Huron Central gathered up many of the cars dwelling in Sudbury and set off down the Webbwood Sub. After a couple of switching moves at McKerrow the crew will head south down the last remnants of the Little Current Sub to service the pulp and paper mill in Espanola.

Wintertime in the mountains can be gorgeous, but it is a fickle enchantress. My fear of being stuck on the highway by an avalanche or accident kept me grounded close to home. Needless to say I didn't get out much during my stint in the mountains, but being home with code blue skies and an early afternoon westbound departing Revelstoke I headed to the Last Spike to see what I could work with. Pillowy snow coated everything at the historical landmark 45 km west of Revelstoke which is run by the Revelstoke Museum. The angles are tight here, and I tried my best to frame the Vancouver bound hotshot amongst the old CP van, monument and gift shop while also trying to get over the chain-link fence and deal with those pesky hydro wires. For those keeping track CP 9665 went through the rebuild program and came out as AC4400CWM CP 8109.

The Hearst yard engine (ONT 2200) has cleared after building 516's outgoing train, seen to the left. Having cut off their inbound train from Cochrane<a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=49837">(pictured here)</a>, the set of SD40-2's prepare to nose onto their train while the yard helper hitches a ride to normal the crossover switches. After switching engines and cutting in the brake line, 516 will be on the move "south" out of town, bound for Cochrane. The Hearst engine will couple up and begin to disassemble the inbound 313 consist before continuing the tasks of servicing the local industries.
