![CN train 701 coke train has just completed dumping and is secured awaiting a crew to take it back west (then south). Trains 701/702 began running north to Thunder Bay in 2017 and have been a fairly regular fixture ever since. Due to it's start on the UP in Minnesota it's a guarantee to have foreign power. A little more than two years prior to the closure, on a quiet Monday morning I found CN GP9RM's 4134-4140 resting outside the yard office at Talbotville awaiting their next call to service at the nearby plant.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/DSC_8476-200x150.jpg)

![It's train time at Hawk. The southbound "Tour of the Line" passenger train arrives, guided by a crew member who is standing in the front vestibule of the lead coach. Sitting in the next track over in the yard is northbound freight 571 awaiting their freight crew to come on duty with the solo SD40-2W 5277. The final "Tour of the Line" operated in 2015- which at that time was ran by Railmark crews. During 2021, Watco would put in an offer to purchase the line from Sault Ste. Marie to Oba (as well as various other branches in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) and as of February 1, 2022 would commenced operations as the "Agawa Canyon Railroad". They currently switch freight mostly in the Sault Ste Marie area and operate the Agawa Canyon Tour train in the fall. But the tracks from Canyon thru Hawk and up to Oba have, as far as I know remained silent ever since. There was hope the passenger would start up again... time will only tell.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/DSC_8871-200x150.jpg)

A number of things here have changed in the years since this shot. <br><br>
First off, the SD90Mac trailing disappeared the year after this photo was taken- only to languish for about decade before being rebuilt into an SD70ACu. The "farm leads" loaded with boxcars for the local paper mill were taken our of service and the tracks removed in the coming years, while the smoke stack from the local OPG plant puffing away here, came down sometime in 2021. ![Thunder Bay to Fort Frances freight CN 437 is making good time through the small town of Kakabeka Falls with a duo of veteran cowls in the lead. Passing the razed station site of the station, replaced with a mundane shack used for MoW employees decked out in that lovely beige siding. The double station name signs framing both sides of the main herald back to better times with this section of right of way was double tracked. For those keeping track power was behind the lead SD60F was sister CN 5533. ![A busy scene at the elevator in Tupperville, Ontario. Grain dust fills the air as a transport takes on a load of area grain. The conductor of D924 has bent the iron to gain access to the last customer serviced by CSX on the former C&O Sub 2 south of Sarnia to exchange the four grain loads with four empties. CSX ceased service through here in October 2013 and the rails have remained silent ever since.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/DSC_1737-200x150.jpg)

![The westbound Huron Central freight is seen approaching McKerrow with HCRY GP40-3 3802, HCRY RM-1 802, QGRY GP38 2008 and HCRY GP40-2LW 3013 hauling 131 cars. The "above average" length of this freight was due to G&W shuttering operations in the weeks prior as they were looking for a handout from the government in the range of $30 million to upgrade and upkeep the tracks. With terms agreed to, Huron Central gathered up many of the cars dwelling in Sudbury and set off down the Webbwood Sub. After a couple of switching moves at McKerrow the crew will head south down the last remnants of the Little Current Sub to service the pulp and paper mill in Espanola.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/DSC_6399-200x150.jpg)

![Wintertime in the mountains can be gorgeous, but it is a fickle enchantress. My fear of being stuck on the highway by an avalanche or accident kept me grounded close to home. Needless to say I didn't get out much during my stint in the mountains, but being home with code blue skies and an early afternoon westbound departing Revelstoke I headed to the Last Spike to see what I could work with. Pillowy snow coated everything at the historical landmark 45 km west of Revelstoke which is run by the Revelstoke Museum. The angles are tight here, and I tried my best to frame the Vancouver bound hotshot amongst the old CP van, monument and gift shop while also trying to get over the chain-link fence and deal with those pesky hydro wires. For those keeping track CP 9665 went through the rebuild program and came out as AC4400CWM CP 8109.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/DSC_1931-200x150.jpg)

Having cut off their inbound train from Cochrane<a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=49837">(pictured here)</a>, the set of SD40-2's prepare to nose onto their train while the yard helper hitches a ride to normal the crossover switches. After switching engines and cutting in the brake line, 516 will be on the move "south" out of town, bound for Cochrane. The Hearst engine will couple up and begin to disassemble the inbound 313 consist before continuing the tasks of servicing the local industries.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/DSC_3746-200x150.jpg)

![An overview the tight track layout at Dryden's Domtar Mill. Cando SW1200RS 1008 has completed its switch of the chemical plant and is in the process of running around two cars (1 caustic and 1 acid). The boxcars spotted up top are beside the former stud mill which rarely sees any cars spotted inside anymore. Down the hill in the background, you can make out a solo boxcar sitting on the track that leads to the pulp and paper shed, behind that is a string of boxcars in one of two tracks that are used for lifts and set offs. CPKC train number 420 can be seen accelerating from their earlier stop to drop off traffic for the mill. Further to the left a pair of tracks can be seen with a number of tank cars and sodium clorate hoppers, stored awaiting their spot. Both these tracks were originally used to load IMS containers. This mill use to pump out fine paper that would be loaded in containers and lifted by a 100 series freight (107/108 iirc). This traffic ended around the time of the 2008 recession. CP serviced this industry up until August 2014. This mill is currently up for sale, one of the many mills that is required to be sold after the Domtar's parent company, Paper Excellence's acquisition of Resolute Forest Products.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DJI_0104-200x150.jpg)

![The crew of the afternoon Current River job pauses inside the gate of Viterra "C House" (still called "ugga" by crews referring to United Grain Growers A House) before gathering up tracks of grain empties with CP 1522-1640-1574. In the background the abandoned and decrepit Pool 4A and 4B complex, while behind that the yellow top of JRI's massive grain terminal can be seen. Due to the grades throughout the Current River yard, tonnage handled and 4-axle restrictions in places like UGGA (since lifted) and the Great West Timber Spur this job required a trio of Geeps. GP9u's were commonplace, later replaced with GP38-2's. Viterra would close this elevator for a number of years and CP would pull it's crew start out of Current River, consolidating crews to their depot in old Fort William off Syndicate Ave. <br><br>The elevator would remain shuttered until Glencore International took over Viterra in late 2012 resulting in James Richardsons & Sons purchasing this facility. As of 2023 the elevator is operated as overflow for the bigger Richardsons Terminal next door. It is now known on paper as the <i>Current River Elevator</i> however crews still refer to it as "ugga"- decades after United Grain Growers has ever been a thing.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/DSC_8671-Edit-200x150.jpg)

CITX 3008 would be purchased by Norfolk Southern and sport painted up in an Operation Livesaver scheme in late 2013/ early 2014, retired and sold in July 2020 to Progress Rail and appears to be have been scrapped as of 2021.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/DSC_1566sm-200x150.jpg)

![On a day that has given us everything from sun to rain, to sleet and snow along with a constant stiff wind blowing off Lake Huron, a rainbow appears above the crew of GEXR 433 as they prep to depart for the P&H elevator located at the end of track at Centralia to spot 17 cars. Having switched Hensall extensively for the previous 2 hours, collecting the pulls from the towns elevators including a lengthy string from WG Thompsons (out of frame, behind me) and setting off the locals, they will leave town with every track in town plugged with much more work to do on the return trip.... but that will be the recrews problem to deal with after relieving this crew at Centralia.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/DSC_7830b-200x150.jpg)
