A desolate and eerie calm hangs over what was once a steady divisional point at Hawk Junction. The station seems all but abandoned. The unkept station platform has weeds and moss growing along the building where baggage carts once waited to aid in loading and unloading at train time, rocks and glass litter the rest. The only tenants now are the yellow jackets nesting underneath one of the green light fixtures. Isolated showers pass through the area. The mood is solemn. Barely even a chirp from main reservoir from the parked locomotive out front. These late summer days in 2021 see little action. No thru freights run anymore between Hearst and Sault Ste. Marie and the "Tour of the Line" passenger is six years removed from operating. Still being the home terminal for the few remaining former ACR employees, the crew will go on duty in the evening Tuesdays and Thursdays at Hawk, running light up to Oba to lift their traffic for Hearst and perhaps have cars destined for log loading, returning Wednesday and Fridays ex Hearst. They setoff their traffic in the yard at Oba before returning to Hawk Junction- again, usually light power. Although the sale of the line has been agreed upon, pending regulatory approval, these waning days of CN's ownership look bleak.

They weren't the best of times but they were certainly better than how they are now found along the former Algoma Central in 2021. The southbound passenger, labelled as the "Tour of the Line" train has arrived at Hawk Jct and is taking on a couple passengers while a couple detrain. It's a busy few moments as totes and coolers are unloaded from the baggage car. On the paved platform a number of baggage carts take up real estate, being as inviting and patient as possible for any guests. One may end up being used to rest any waiting luggage, fishing or hunting gear.

High above the Deerfoot Trail, a CP job with GP9u's 1647 and 1567 complete with an old van, is beginning their descent to the mainline past the Calgary Herald, having completed their days task along this industrial trackage known as the M Lead, which branches off the Red Deer Sub at Zoo. It is quite the dip down to the mainline... That's the top of the codeline in the foreground! <br><br> <i>On a side note, I found my self checking out recent satellite and street view images of the area and this trackage seems to be unused and abandoned. Time marches on...</i>

Genesee and Wyoming having threatened to shutter the entire line between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie and suspending operations for a brief amount time (can't remember the exact amount, a week- maybe two?) re-appears at the Domtar mill in Espanola to switch the plant. It seems every 10 years or so the American company lobbies the Provincial and Federal governments for millions of dollars in grants to keep up with maintenance threatening to permanently close the line, having done so again in 2020, reaching another successful resolution in May 2021.

Ignace Yard. Just a shell of it's former self. It's main job these days can see the loading and unloading of supplies for ES (ties, tie plates, anchors, etc), car storage and to facilitate the rock trains which come and go from Dyment Pit 37 miles to the west. So I suppose this picture sums it's purpose up perfectly. A "Box Train" (grain empties) has been yarded in the north yard, while in the south yard a solo gondola loaded with ties sits beside a Herzog train fresh in from "The Pit", having been yarded in track 1 and showcasing the eclectic GMD trio of CP 9014- CP 3649- CP 5866.<br><br>

Of note, you may notice the white haze on the horizon. That is smoke from the reported 76 fires that were burning across the district, within 3 weeks that number would sky rocket to over 120 fires. This year has been incredibly dry across most of western and central Canada and into the northwest region of Ontario. Prayers to all those affected by the fires.

CEFX 1035 and a fresh CP 8784 lead South Edmonton to Vaughn train 104-15, beginning their descent into the Lakehead have crested the short but steep grade a mile or so earlier- a precursor to the heavy grades which await ahead. Not that they will be an issue for this eastbound hotshot.<br> In the foreground the former CN Graham Sub turned logging road which parallels the Kam Sub from Finmark to Raith.

GEXR meets OSR in Waterloo? It happened. Goderich and Exeter local No. 584 is returning from Elmira passing "Tar Baby" who was leased to the Waterloo Central in the summer of 2007 for their operations. Here she rests in the siding, coupled to WCR's mix of passenger equipment next to the "new" Waterloo station built for the upstart Waterloo-St Jacob's Railway a decade prior. To say this area has undergone a major facelift, would be an understatement. The WCR hasn't been based out of Waterloo in years, relocating their base up the line to St Jacob's after the ION light rail project moved in, forever changing this scene.

The only time to date I've capture the Barrie-Collingwood Railway running was back in February 2009 as they headed north to Collingwood to service Canadian Mist Distillers. On this bitter February day, <i>The Spirit of Collingwood</i> with a hopper for FS Partners in Stayner and three tanks for Canadian Mist in tow pictured here northbound passing over the quaint and attractive bridge over the Batteaux Creek.

A dark, calm and quiet winter's night in downtown Revelstoke is broken by the reverberation of a westbound accelerating out of town after a crew change. In the yard a set of GE locomotives idle away, sharing company with a staged eastbound grain empty.

In 2021 time is ticking down for the Orangeville and Brampton Railway however back in June 2008 it was just another day for the Cando crew. Having delivered their outbound traffic on the south end of the interchange, the crew has coupled up to their Orangeville bound traffic. The hogger checks his watch prior to re-entering his steed, while the conductor walks to make the cut at the old CP caboose (now known as a "riding platform"). Once back in Orangeville, they will make a couple moves in the yard before heading to the industrial trackage at the "north" end of town to switch a couple customers before tying up for the day back at the yard.

Ontario Southland Railway RS23's 504-505 display what MLW's are all about as they shove their southbound train north, out of the interchange on an overcast April day. Power from GEXR 580 sits parked at the north end of the interchange after the mornings events.<br><br>April 27th in 2007 was a day of drama for the operating railroads in Guelph. Earlier that day Goderich and Exeter freight 580 had derailed a mile or so south of the interchange after crossing Edinburgh Road for their final time. OSR ended up running down to the site to try and rerail one of the derailed cars unsuccessfully. They'd return to the interchange, wye the power and continue on with their day.

Dubbed the "Superior Flyer", 29B-13 skirts the shores of Lake Superior past the old pit at Cavers. Just ahead of them lies the siding at Gravel, where the power will cut off, run around the train and return to Schreiber. <br><br>This was the second of a number of excursions celebrating the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Pacific that took part over three days. The first operated east out of Thunder Bay to Hurkett and return. The following day they deadheaded the consist over to Schreiber for this evening run to Gravel and return. Over the course of the next two days they would operate an excursion east out of Schreiber to Coldwell in the morning and west to Gravel in the evening.

Toronto to Winnipeg manifest accelerates out of the crew change point in Schreiber with consecutively numbered SD90MAC's 9101-9102. If you look closely above the fifth and sixth car from the headend, you might be able to pick out the top of some maroon looking equipment. The Royal Canadian Pacific was in town on Day 2 of a 3 day excursion giving rides to CP employees on the Nipigon and Heron Bay subs in celebration of CP's 125th anniversary.

AbitibiBowater 1305 leaves the confines of the large paper mill, ambling alongside the parking spaces and across from the storefronts on Ambridge Drive in the small northern Ontario community. Just like clockwork, they are coming out to greet the now twice weekly ONR freight at the town's rail yard. This ritual will end in a little over four years when the newly restructured forestry company now named Resolute Forest Products will shutter this mill operation days prior to Christmas 2014. Sometime in the years following this picture the 1305 would leave the property and emerge at <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=27476">Resolute's Allanburg operation</a> sporting new paint (and lacking the sponges on exhaust stacks!)

The yard in Revelstoke is getting a much needed cleaning. Assisting in the spreading operation with Jordan Spreader CP 402889 are a pair of visitors in the form of CITX 3036 (and CITX 3008 out of frame). A pair of SD40-2's with obvious Burlington Northern heritage. The amount of snow that falls over the winter season in Revelstoke and area mountain passes is incredible with plow and spreader operations frequently being called to clear the rails of the Mountain and Shuswap Subs. <br><br>
<i>Roster Note: CITX 3036 would be purchased by Norfolk Southern a couple years later and become NS 3501, being painted up in an Operation Lifesaver scheme. It was removed off their roster by 2020- disposition unknown to me.</i>

The forestry crisis had left its mark in northern Ontario by 2010 and the crew of Ontario Northland train 213/ 414 are only venturing north to Cochrane twice a week. It makes for a long day of building their train in Englehart, performing any work online plus a side trip into Iroquois Falls before yarding at Cochrane and turning back to Englehart. <br> At the end of a gorgeous fall day, we catch up to southbound 414 accelerating a large freight over the bridge at Monteith and past the towns signature water tower and correctional facility. The crew will get into Englehart a couple hours later before resting quickly before having to be on duty to switch the yard first thing thing in the morning.

Having just crew changed around the curve, the crew is proceeding to the East Switch Field. Exhaust begins surging out of the engines, a sign that the crew has seen and acknowledged the upcoming signal. The engineer aboard CP 9665 East has begun to unleash all his available horsepower anticipating the upcoming assault on "The Big Hill".

A meet goes down between the westbound <i>Canadian</i> and an eastbound Canadian National IMS at the one time crew change point of Redditt, Ontario. 2018 was quite a dry year and by this time in June the sun had been obscured by area forest fires in this part of northern Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

A warm July evening in Schreiber finds the "29B", dubbed locally as the "Superior Flyer" stopped at the station having completed an evening run west to Gravel and return. The crew reminisces over the radio of the old days when they would spot up the Canadian just like this while passengers disembark after an evening run to Gravel. Once the all clear is given, the train will proceed to tie down for the night in the yard. The following morning they will run east to Coldwell and return with another run west to Gravel in the evening and return. This was a 3 day excursion for CP employees based out of Schreiber, all organized for the 125th anniversary of the driving of the Last Spike.

<b>Kama Bay! What a sight!</b> 10 years ago (from the date of this upload) I stood high above the waters of Lake Superior and among the peak fall colours the 'North Shore' had to display with my (then) girlfriend and captured Vancouver to Montreal train 112-24 passing below. I'd return the following year to capture the scene in the<a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=1002"> summer.</a> Not sure if I'm going to recreate this one in the winter time tho...
