About Chessie5730

I grew up around Coatsworth, Ontario next to the C&O Canadian Division back in the 70's. Have always been interested in trains since I was a toddler. My Grandfather gave me my first electric train when I was 4 and it has now stuck for 48 years. My son, 6, and daughter, 10, are both interested in model trains and photography as well, so I hope to share my 30+ years of experience with them for many more years to come.

CP Train 2-234-10 rolls eastward through the Essex County flatlands on April 12, 2022 with BNSF 'Bonnet' #718 and freshly rebuilt QGRY GP38-2 #3538. BNSF 718 had arrived in Windsor around 0830 and lifted the QGRY 3538 and cars in Windsor while waiting on a late running 131 to arrive. All the better as it allow the sun to get further around for better lighting. Considering it's been raining/snowing the past few days, and it's supposed to continue through Easter weekend, I'll take a nice day with a rare consist!!!

Heading back east, CP's 8781 in Hapag-Lloyd paint, leads train #130 (formerly #140) at MP 91.3 of CP's Windsor Subdivision on a dreary March 31, 2022. Hopefully today 8781 will be able to make good time from Windsor to London unlike back on March 24th when it had to rescue a dead Train #244 that had run out of fuel. Sun has eluded me the 3 times this unit has gone by, but I still haven't lost faith.... :-)

Hapag-Lloyd running "Southern Style".... CP's Hapag-Lloyd unit, working as 'Work Extra 8781', pulls a dead Train #244 into the siding in Tilbury, Ontario on March 24, 2022. Here's how the story goes.... So around 6:00am on March 24th, UP 8849 East, a 244 train, departed Windsor for London. Around MP 86 UP 8849 ran out of fuel and came to a stop blocking the Gracie Sideroad just west of Tilbury around 6:30am-ish. Talks then begin on what to do. "Is there power in Windsor to go out and drag 244 back to Belle River?" 'Nope'. "Is T69 still around Chatham and they can go back to Tilbury and pull 244 east and clear?" 'Nope'. So with nothing around to do an assist, and UP 8849 far enough past the Gracie Sideroad that they can't refuel it, the only hope is for Train #141, which was still in London, to do a rescue. But 141 isn't ready to Leave London yet. Eventually, around 0930 CP 8781, with train #141, departed London to the rescue. After leaving London 141 got hit by the Hotbox detector and had 4 'hot wheels' so they had to stop and inspect the train. After a set and release they were able to continue east with no further issues at the next HB detector. 141 finally arrived at MP 74 around 12:00pm-ish. Here the crew of #141 cut 8781 away from the trailing CP unit and left the train behind as they headed west at 10mph to get 244. Upon arrival at 244 they had some issues making a good joint. The crew of 244 by this point was out of time and once 141 had the air up on the stranded 244, the 244 crew walked to their cab to leave and book rest. At this point 8781, leading long hood forward, dragged UP 8849 and train #244 east and into the siding in Tilbury. Of course 244 was 2 cars too long for the siding, so they had to double over 1 rack and the UP 8849 in to the back track. Once completed 8781 was able to head back east to MP 74 and their 141 train. After everything was setup again 141 got away and finally cleared into Windsor around 4:40pm, a mear 7 hours after leaving London. All in all there were 4 trains delayed due to the rescue with one left in the siding for 2 days with no fuel. This my friends is what results from "Precision Scheduled Railroading"....

New number, same train.... Transfer Train #H98, formerly Train #T28, sits at Walkerville siding on the east end of Windsor waiting for a former CP Train #141, now Train #131, to finish switching. Once complete Train #131 will run through VACIS, followed by #H98, prior to both heading to the U.S. I guess under 'PSR' the trains move faster when you go to all the trouble of changing the train #'s.... Hahaahahahh...........

CP 9804 and BNSF 4109 lead a Sunday morning 234 out of Belle River, Ontario. The train had been hit by the Hot Box detector in Puce resulting in a long stop at Belle River while the Conductor found several applied handbrakes in the train. After releasing about 4 handbrakes the train was underway again, although local traffic was not happy as both crossings in town had been blocked for about 45 minutes.

CP 8136 is partnered up with Norfolk Southern 'Interstate' heritage unit #8105 as it approaches the Rochester Townline, just east of St. Joachim, Ontario on February 27, 2022. Nice seeing a variety of colors on CP with units from various Class 1's running through fairly regular in the past few years.

CP 8136 leads train #141 and the Norfolk Southern 'Interstate RR' heritage unit #8105, AKA 'The Creamsicle', through Jeanette's Creek, Ontario on a beautiful February 27th, 2022. Not the first time 8105 has been on CP's Windsor Sub, but this is the first catch of it for me on the CP. Although much dirtier than when we saw in West Virginia back in 2021, it's still one of my favorite of the NS Heritage fleet.

CP train #141 was a 'Skittles' special today with a rainbow of color. CP 8010 leads train #141 with BNSF 6668, CSX 552, and CP 8641 in tow as it approaches Begin/End CTC Sign Walkerville on a frigid January 26th. Further back in the train is CP 9806 as the mid-train DPU completing the 5 units that powered 141 across the Galt and Windsor subs.

A little further south on the Essex Terminal and we have #107, with it's 4 tanks in tow, rolling over the River Canard bridge. Best part of this time of year is with the river frozen over you can walk out and get closer pics than you can from land the rest of the year. May have hit this spot again this year before the Spring thaw.

Second verse, not the same as the first... The day after shooting Essex Terminal #105 passing the University of Windsor's "Moving Things Along" billboard, we find Essex Terminal SW1500 #107 at the same location. Today #107 is heading out to Amherstburg with 4 tanks in tow, but business is business, and we love seeing the ETR doing well and keeping the local rail industry alive.

"Moving Things Along" is a very true statement for this picture. Essex Terminal #105 pulls a cut of ADM hoppers south out of Ojibway Yard to be stored on the old Windsor Salt siding. 105 wears an 'as delivered' inspired scheme that is similar to the scheme it wore when it was delivered new to the Essex Terminal back in March of 1956. 66 years of working for the Essex Terminal and many of us hope that 105 can have another 66 at least before retirement.

The large mill at Haycroft stands quietly in the background as CP Train #141 with CP Army Tribute SD70ACu #7020 and BNSF 'Executive' SD70MAC #9572 break a peaceful January silence as they, and 109 autoracks, roar across the flat Essex County countryside on their way to Windsor, Ontario.

Wearing of the 'green'.... BNSF 'Executive' SD70MAC has been working the Windsor and Galt subs for almost a week now, and due to bad weather or bad timing I managed to miss it 3 times. So, with CP Army Tribute SD70ACu #7020 and BNSF 'Executive' SD70MAC #9572 paired up and roaming around Toronto the past couple of days I was hopeful that they'd send the duo back west and, as luck would have it, they found their way onto Train #141 for us. So here we see the green duo heading westbound as the roll through the Essex County flatlands nearing Haycroft, Ontario while on their way to Windsor, and ultimately on to Chicago. Now if they could just come back on St. Patrick's Day!!!! :-)

A rare morning eastbound in descent light on the Windsor Sub? Surely not!! With a h/u from a friend in Windsor that an e/b was headed my way, I set out to the East Siding Switch Belle River to grab a shot since the light was so nice this morning. While waiting the text messages erupted telling me that 2-244 had a BNSF SD70ACe leading and on it's way to me. As I waited, CP train #141 snuck up behind me to make the meet in Belle River and slow 8493's progress. Once BNSF 8493 had cleared into the siding, train #141 headed west allowing 2-244 to depart. Here we have BNSF 8493 running solo on 2-244 as it departs ESS Belle River on the CP Windsor Sub.

Almost like the colorful 90's on CP again!! CP ES44AC #8938 leads westbound train #141 through the flatlands of Kent County as it approaches Jeanettes Creek Road just south of Jeanettes Creek, Ontario on December 13, 2021. In tow are CP AC44CW #8643 with BNSF ES44C4 #6890, BNSF SD70ACe #8538, and CSX ST70AH #8900, all headed back to Chicago to be interchanged back to their home roads. The BNSF's had come east on a 244 autorack train the day previous, but I'm not sure as to where the CSX 8900 came from. I guess the 1 positive of PSR is the fact that foreign road power has become common on the CP making it worth going out to shoot again. Merry Christmas everyone..........

'Wearing of the Green'. Essex Terminal Railway SW1200 #105 basks out in beautiful sun light in it's new 'as delivered' paint scheme. The 105 was painted as a tribute to the railroad's history as it is the last unit on the roster that was purchased new from GMDD. Today 105 is teamed up with former EMD SW1500 Demonstrator #107 as the crew pauses from switching Ojibway Yard for a bean run to Tim Horton's.

Dull day enlightenment.... Had heard that CP 244 had a solo BNSF GE on it, but it was an ugly morning, so I wasn't thinking it would be worth the time. About 10 minutes before 244 arrived in Belle River to meet westbound CP train #141, I got a report that BNSF 6179 was the lone unit on 244.... Wait... That's a 'sticker' unit... So I decided that despite it being an ugly day, it might be worth heading out for a few minutes. So here you see BNSF 6179, the 25th Anniversary unit, as it approaches Strong Road just east of Belle River, Ontario after having waited for 141 to pass. Funny what can brighten up a dull day sometimes.......

Essex Terminal SW1200 #105 waits at the east end of Ojibway yard in LaSalle, Ontario for the Conductor to throw the yard lead switch so they can continue east past the lead. In the background sits Dainty Rice, which is one of the prominent Customers on the Essex Terminal at Ojibway. Rice is brought in to Dainty in 3 bay hoppers from Union Pacific, but many still have their SSW/SP linage showing through as the loads originate on former SSW/SP lines. Sadly none were around today to shoot, but I think shot of 105 looks good none the less.

Lunch Time.... Essex Terminal SW1200 #105, paired with SW1500 #107, looks sharp in it's new paint as the crew takes their lunch break from working Ojibway Yard in LaSalle, Ontario today. Shortly the pair will head to the east end of the yard and then head in to switch the large ADM facility located to the north of this photo.
