About Chessie5730


I grew up around Coatsworth, Ontario next to the C&O Canadian Division back in the 70's. Have always been interested in trains since I was a toddler. My Grandfather gave me my first electric train when I was 4 and it has now stuck for 48 years. My son, 6, and daughter, 10, are both interested in model trains and photography as well, so I hope to share my 30+ years of experience with them for many more years to come.

With winter wheat popping up now a pair of BNSF GE's lead CPKC Train #231 across the CPKC Windsor Subdivision at MP 88.0 on November 9, 2024. This pair had been running east out of London on the 238/239 trains to/from Welland but were changed out with 231's power in London this morning to my benefit. :-)

VIA's new "BIC Banana" Charger Set speeds across the Essex County country side into the late afternoon "golden hour" sun on November 5, 2024. Train #73 is running about 40 minutes late today due to issues along the line between London and Windsor, but fortunately that worked in my favor today.

VIA's "LUMI" Charger set makes it's first appearance on the VIA Chatham Sub today, November 4, 2024, as it passes through Belle River, Ontario. Reminiscent of the VIA Turbo Train in appearance, but certainly not in sound, as I remember seeing and hearing the Turbo once running east of Toronto when I was a kid.

Always nice to have an 'ACe' up your sleeve, but even better to have one on the point. BNSF SD70ACe #9100 leads a CPKC Westbound through Puce, Ontario on this beautiful October 12th, 2024 day. Fall colors of orange and red are coming through even without the BNSF/CP combo on the train. :-) This is by far my favorite time of year to get out and shoot trains....

The look of the future is NOW.... VIA "Charger" #2210 leads train #72 through Belle River, Ontario on October 3, 2024. With the arrival of the Charger sets the days of F40PH-2Ds and P42DC locos, with classic VIA consists are numbered. Get your shots or lose out forever... Remember those FP7's and FPA4's? Same thing all over again.....

Essex Terminal GP9 #108 is preparing to pull 5 loaded scrap gons from K-Scrap on Windsor's West end. K-Scrap is a the end of the ETR's Belt Line and one of only a couple industries left on that spur. After pulling the 5 loads ETR 108 will shove 5 more empties deep into the K-Scrap yard. Although K-Scrap ships cars out regularly, this is the first time in 35+ years of Railfanning that I happened to be in the right place at the right time to catch the ETR working this industry. I guess patience really is a virtue in this case.

To the rescue... CN 'blueberry' #4907 and CN 7038 are running light eastbound down the VIA Chatham Sub to grab the rear 5 cars of CN train #438. Unsure what exactly happened, but from what I've heard, 438 pulled a drawbar and had to pull the bad order car east all the way to Stoney Point so set it off in the siding. The 5 cars were blocking Old Tecumseh Road for quite some time with the O.P.P. reporting a derailment, but that was not the case. I'm sure we'll hear more about this over the next few days. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time for a change.

Every Child Matters in Belle River, but then every child matters no matter where they are. CP 8757 speeds past the 'Belle River' mileboard and into the late afternoon sun as it heads west towards Windsor on the CPKC Windsor Subdivision on April 19, 2024.

Kansas City Southern ET44AC #5003 is in command of CPKC Train #528 as it rolls eastward through Belle River, Ontario on April 13, 2024. Nice to catch a KCS leader in good light as a change to the regular CP power, but I'm sure in time this too will become 'mundane' as more and more of the KCS and CP power gets intermixed over the years to come.

The 'future' is now..... VIA Train #73 has cleared Stoney Point, Ontario and is hi-balling west on the Chatham Subdivision with a new Siemens 'Charger' set on the first revenue run of this new equipment on a Windsor bound train. Sadly I can say that I find this new equipment 'lack luster' to look at and I will surely miss the old P42's, F40's and the Budd/LRC equipment that has traversed these rails for the last 30 years as these new 'trains' just look like toys to me.... :-(

I'm not a smoker, but I don't mind getting out to shoot a 'cigar band' from time to time. BNSF Warbonnet #4710 leads empty CPKC autorack train #734 east past the Belle River mile board as it approaches Strong Road near MP #92 of the CPKC Windsor Subdivision on February 20, 2024.

CPKC Train #734 rolls eastbound out of Belle River, Ontario with BNSF 3986 and 5477 on point for power. As BNSF 3986 passes the westbound Belle River mileboard the Engineer throttles up and begins to pick up speed after pulling out of the siding where they had cleared up for a meet with train #231 on what was a beautiful, warm, sunny March 4th, 2024.

Integration.... KCS/KCSM power is more and more prevalent each week since the CPKC 'merger' with KCS power leading trains more and more often. Today's catch is CPKC Ethanol Train #528 with KCS 4609 and KCSM 4562 running elephant style as it passes the east Belle River mileboard on it's way eastward on the CPKC Windsor Subdivision.

BNSF 609 leads the charge on CPKC Train #135 as it rolls along the flat Windsor Subdivision near MP 98.88. Pure foreign road lashups have been pretty common the past few weeks with BNSF, UP, and NS power dominating many trains, but I'm certainly not going to complain..... :-)

"Reflecting on 2001"...... Not the year, but LDSX GP38 #2001. As the 0830 job continues west through Windsor it has just crossed Brock Street and rounds the bend on it's trip to Ojibway yard on February 8, 2024. Rumors have it that LDSX 2001 has been purchased, but not by the Essex Terminal, so getting shots of this former C&O GP38 running on the ETR may be short lived.

LDSX GP38 #2001 trundles across Campbell Ave in residential West Windsor while on it's way to Ojibway Yard way out on the west end of town. The 0830 job has lifted about 30 cars from CN interchange at Van De Water yard including several autoracks on the tail end that will be brought back to be loaded near Kildare Road in East Windsor.

Is that a 'lunar' signal??? ;-) With the moon in the sky, and the Canadian and U.S. flags flapping in the wind, the CPKC 2023 Holiday Train makes it's way west toward Windsor, Ontario in the late afternoon light of November 24, 2023. As always CPKC put on a good show with the Holiday Train drawing observers and photographers all along the line to see what has become a welcome annual tradition.

Roberval and Saguenay Railway SD70ACe #81 sits in the CPKC Yard in Windsor, Ontario on November 20, 2023. RS #81 is joined by #80 which is out of the picture here. #81 started life as CSX #4831 and was then sold to Progress Rail to become PRLX #4831, and then RS #81. The unit was used on the Roberval and Saguenay for a short period before being moved to North Bay and stored at the ONR Shops. #80 and #81 made it Windsor via CN and were interchanged to the Essex Terminal to then move them to the CP Interchange. Not sure what the final destination for the units is yet, but I would assume that they are headed back to Progress Rail.
