Originally from Dundas, Ont, always had an interest in trains. Worked briefly with the TH&B Rly in Hamilton and then went west to BC Rail 1973 to 2008 working mostly in Williams Lake BC as Locomotive Engineer. Now retired in Nova Scotia.

On BCOL 4618 a view of the Central Display Unit (CDU) which relays info to and from the Sense Braking Unit (SBU) on the tailend of the train. At the time this image was taken we were stopped at Colebank doing some work at Pinnacle Pellet plant which was a fairly new operation making heating wood pellets for export. We were cutoff from the train and the CDU is displaying a "low pressure alarm", train length dialed in at "9679" feet, "0" air pressure on the rear and the SBU light (marker) is "on" and the rear of the train is "stopped".On the right just below the "comm test" button is the toggle switch for emergency brake application on rear of the train.

Early morning at Bayview Junction, east bound freight drifting off the Dundas sub. Just another plain jane SD-40, no dynamic brake and no ditch lights. American crane parked in the Helper spur and I did not get any pictures of it. Anybody recognize the auto parked on the left, can't recall if there were any other railfans there that day.

A bitterly cold and gloomy afternoon at Bayview Junction. Pretty sure this is the Starlight heading to Hamilton and the TH&B. These were the good old days at Bayview, just drive in, behave yourself and watch the trains.

A rather tattered looking C&O 5732 at the roundhouse area in St. Thomas. Perhaps Mr. Mercer might have an explanation of the fresh yellow paint on the short hood. I was "home" in Ontario for a family visit and spent sometime with my Grandmother in St.Thomas. Did a short time railfanning while there and got a few images of the C&O. My Grandfather was an Engineer for the Wabash in St Thomas and the street he lived on there were railroader neighbors that worked for the CN, Wabash, NYC and the PM (C&O). Oh what a joy that would be to chat with those folks now. St Thomas was a great railroad town for many years, sadly the railroads are all gone now.

Taking a break in the siding at Onward on the BC Rail Lillooet sub. 644 with white flags as a "work extra". I recall we were doing some odd jobs in conjunction with MoW crews finishing a major tie, rail and ballast project .Great afternoon light for a picture, in hindsight, sadly I did not take a picture of the caboose. It's all long gone history.

A hot August afternoon and CN 8512 is hostling some RDC units to or from Toronto Union Station. So much has changed in this area since this image was taken. Personally I like it the way it was.

A very colourful ONR passenger train departing Toronto Union. A TEE train?? Such a long time ago, can't recall if I was on the Spadina Ave bridge or perhaps likely Bathurst Street. Details vague in my mind and perhaps some of you fellows can fill in the details of what the train number was etc.

On the main track at Mackin, VO symbol freight is waiting on a meet with southbound train. Notice the white flags /white lights indicating "run extra" Williams Lake to Prince George BC. Early spring morning with difficult light for photos. Anyhow, this was perhaps my favorite freight job out of Williams Lake with an early morning departure, a good snooze in Prince George and then a late evening trip back to Williams Lake. Quite often northbound we had work at Williams Lake, setout and pickup, perhaps setout some empty covered gondolas at Gibraltar for copper ore loading. Quesnel we would setout numerous cars and make a large pickup. On the way home from Prince George, the train was easy handling with a lot of TOFC empty traffic, a quick setout and pickup at Quesnel and sometimes making a quick stop picking up loads at Gibraltar. Late evening at Bayview on a humid smoggy holiday trip to Ontario. Anyhow east bound Tempo train coming off the Dundas sub and ready for the mad dash to Toronto Union Station. If I recall correctly this was train 148.

stopped just inside the south portal of the 3,800 foot long Shalalth tunnel. I seem to recall that we had had a meet at Seton siding and had just pulled out of the north end and were in the process of "restore to normal position" the north switch. I don't know if it was coincidence or convenience that the Conductor's portable radio failed and while stopped waiting for further communication, I had the opportunity of a good image inside the tunnel. Eventually the Conductor arrived in the cab, confirmed that the switch was lined and locked normal and we could proceed. I have been in numerous tunnels and they all seem to have the same dank, sour smell, leaving me with a strong sense that it is not normal to be underground.

Pumping air at Quesnel on this overcast fall morning.The overhead haze is a combination of cool weather fog and some pulp mill smog. With four units on the headend, most likely the trailing unit was setup for DPU. Due to number of powered axle restrictions one of the units would be in idle, bet it was the lead unit. Soon we would continue south to Williams Lake.

BCOL 4652, resting on the shop track in the "south yard" of the former BC Rail. These units were perhaps my favorite to operate, they looked good, had a comfortable cab, were heavy with good ride and pulled well. The real delight was they have a "standard control stand / console" not the horrible back breaking desktop control stand.

It was a hot afternoon as we were descending the BC Rail Kelly Lake Hill at approximately mile 184. It is a twisty winding trip down the hill starting at mile 191 and reaching the bottom of the grade at mile 160, descending 31 miles and losing approximately 814 feet of altitude. Sorry, I cannot pin point the location on the satellite.

Perhaps ancient history and not a very good image. A random shot of the Locotrol panel on a BC Rail MLW 700 series unit. This was an early version of Locotrol I and then we advanced to Locotrol II and onto the new DPU technology. With Locotrol I & II only one remote unit could be controlled although many locomotives could be "MU'd" with the slave unit whereas with newer DPU technology and software, many locomotives can be placed throughout a train and controlled by the lead locomotive.
