Originally from Dundas, Ont, always had an interest in trains. Worked briefly with the TH&B Rly in Hamilton and then went west to BC Rail 1973 to 2008 working mostly in Williams Lake BC as Locomotive Engineer. Now retired in Nova Scotia.

Early morning meet at Mackin. Train No 38, the "OV" symbol on the last few miles from Prince George to Williams Lake BC. Appears that they made a substantial pickup of copper concentrate, loaded in covered gondolas at Gibraltar. The crew will change off at Williams Lake and the train will continue on over two more subdivisions and terminate in North Vancouver. I was on the north bound "VO" from Williams Lake to Prince George and will return later that evening on the OV and perhaps have a meet here again the next early morning. On the left is Springfield Ranch and beyond that is the Fraser River.

Time table scheduled train No 23 approaching Macalister siding on it's journey to Prince George BC. This is symbol freight "VP" ( Vancouver-Peace) and was the BC Rail hot shot priority train carrying lot of TOFC, perishable, construction materials and other high value traffic. Quite a selection of motive power this day including a RCC car.

train No 2 with the BC 31 leading at Onward siding. This train is heading to Lillooet where it will combine with two or three more RDC's and continue to North Vancouver. Evidence of a major MoW project with fresh ballast, ties and perhaps new CWR being installed.

Early morning at Cotwood, working a Geometry Car from Williams Lake to Prince George. The 763 is all shiny and new, having been on the property only a month or two.Note the white flags, denoting that we were operating as a "Work Extra". Most likely we had taken the siding here for a meet with the southbound passenger train. With our work authority we could back out of the siding and test the main track northward from the south switch. Cotwood was a short 600 foot long siding, rarely used although it did come in handy for meeting the Budd Car.

Identity crisis on this loco. BCOL 810 sporting the British Columbia Railway logo and new number 810. This unit is ex EL 2460, one of 12 used C-425's that BC Rail bought. If I recall correctly the railway bought these for 100K each, still in reasonable running condition and ran them until they either failed or could be fitted into the re-building program. Eventually they all got the BCR "two tone green" paint scheme and many years of service.

A bright afternoon and a clean shinny nose on 9172 as it idles at the diesel shop. The shop staff there seemed reasonable with people taking pictures on the property and it also helped that I was a CN employee at the time.

Under the high summer sun, 9171 idles at the Calder Yard diesel shop. 9171 was originally GTW 9013 built as an F-3. Not sure of the circumstances or re-building but was reclassified as an F-7 and has retained the "chicken wire" grills. I understand this unit is preserved at the railway museum in St.Thomas, Ontario. Calder yard has been renamed Walker Yard

A dull June afternoon and a photo op at Greening. Lets see we have a GMDL leading, couple models from MLW and a EMD trailing. This is train #34 from Prince George to Williams Lake. Our symbol is "CV" Cariboo-Vancouver and we have loads and empties that originate in Prince George for various destinations south.

On the shop track at Prince George, a misty morning and perhaps some smog from the pulp mills. BCR 631 sporting fresh paint and a fancy headlight arrangement. Dual seal beam headlights as well as ditch lights. Also the unit has been adapted for operating a slug in yard service.

CN 4017 seen here on an August evening on the shop track at Toronto yard. Looking a little worn and will be re-numbered in the next year so to 9317 and hopefully a fresh coat of paint along with the new number.

Near station name sign Bellos, a moment or two for a photo. We would continue to Greening siding a few miles away, have a meet there with another train. After clearing in the siding we would leave our train there, "change ends" on the locomotives and then follow the south bound train to Quesnel.

VIA 6776 and 3121 in CN livery await their next trip. It was a wonderful place for a railfan, hanging over the bridge and snapping pictures as well as quick tours through the roundhouse.

A bad day for trains. The "WP" switcher on a sunny spring morning encountered a washout at mile 349 on the BC Rail Prince George subdivision. Fortunately the locomotives made it over the washout culvert, unfortunately some of the chip cars did not traverse the track that well. The derailment was quite viz-able to the motorists on highway 97. The ultimate cause was done by the Department of Highways destroying a beaver dam on Hill Road. When the offending dam was dynamited, the sudden water flow overwhelmed the culvert on the railway right of way, causing a washout. No train crew injuries, the beaver was left homeless and moved elsewhere.

A warm summer afternoon, having just descended the Kelly Lake Hill, we are looking forward to a brief stop at Lillooet, pickup some operating authority, stretch my legs and the all important "comfort stop" in a gender designated room in the station. This day for me started at 0:600 in Quesnel, this image taken at 15:08 and we still have another 90 miles and perhaps 5 hours on duty yet to go. It's a long day on the Rocky Mountaineer "Fraser Discovery" operating on three subdivisions. You will notice a person in the cab of the second unit, one of the on board staff having a free moment from the coaches to enjoy the scenery and most likely sneak a quick smoke.

Running along Anderson Lake on our northward journey on the former BC Rail the train is sneaking along the "dry slide", the terrain is rugged straight up and straight down. I could hear the "ohs and ahs" of the passengers enjoying this spectacular scenery. The locomotive is at mile 126 and this area has a 15 mph speed restriction "until track is seen to be clear". Most crews approached this area at about 10 mph. The curve behind the dome car is a tight 13 degree.

mile 160.2 BC Rail, bridge over the Fraser River. Unfortunately I do not have any data such build date, length, height etc. This was my view from the cab.

Mile 160.5 on the BC Rail Lillooet sub, a few miles north of Lillooet BC. An impressive structure crossing the mighty Fraser River. On BC Rail, from Kelly Lake to North Vancouver all mile boards were displayed in whole miles and also half miles such as seen in this image, mile 160.5. The half miles came in handy for the track patrols running ahead of trains as well as for MoW slow orders etc. Other points along the way, bridges, permanent slow orders, major culverts etc etc would have a two point decimal mileage associated.
