Originally from Dundas, Ont, always had an interest in trains. Worked briefly with the TH&B Rly in Hamilton and then went west to BC Rail 1973 to 2008 working mostly in Williams Lake BC as Locomotive Engineer. Now retired in Nova Scotia.

RCC6 (Remote Control Car) ex BN/GN from an EMD "B" unit. BC Rail purchased several of these cars from CPR and BN in the early 1970's and eventually had 10 in service. The RCC cars were the receiving unit for the radio signals from the leading control unit and the RCC was MU'd to the remote control mid-train units. The technology was quite primitive by today standards and the RCC's were not reliable. They were eventually replaced by the MLW M420B, RCL units that BC Rail bought equipped with upgraded electronics and air brake manifold.

Remote Control Car at Prince George, BC Rail yard. Early 1970's BC Rail started to implement mid-train "robots" or remote control units. The railway purchased several RCC cars from CPR and the BN / GN. The RCC cars were made from CLC or EMD B units and contained the electronics and air brake equipment for Remote Control operations. The RCC's were basically the slave receiver and were MU'd to the locomotives in the remote consist and sent the signals to the remote units in the consist. Some of the RCC cars were equipped with a oil stove heater, cot bunk and electric hotplate for use by any technician that may ride the RCC cars during the experimental stage of remote control operations. Nice sunny day and a great day for a train ride. Stopped at Quesnel to do some set out and a pickup, pumping air and time for a photo or two. It was bitterly cold that morning and wished we had the second unit 4609 leading instead of the 758.

O&W 9954 on it's new railroad BC Rail, and perhaps on it's first trip on new turf. During the 1980's BC Rail was desperately short of of motive power and acquired an assortment of second hand locomotives. Eventually 9954 would be overhauled and repainted at the Squamish Locomotive re-build shops and emerge in the BC Rail red white and blue paint along with new number 747.

At Gibraltar, KCC 106 on it's new home railroad is wedged between two "two tone green" BCR MLW's. Eventually 106 will be overhauled and painted in the BC Rail red white & blue paint with a new number 741 although not equipped for lead cab standards. We were stopped there making a pick up copper concentrate.

A quick grab shot, exiting a short tunnel. Despite a lot of white paint on the locos and coaches, the train always looked very clean and bright. I like this paint scheme on the locomotives and coaches much better than the current paint scheme.

North portal of a short tunnel at mile 125.6 on the BC Rail Squamish sub as we exit north bound. There was a 15 mph speed restriction here account track curvature and severe terrain. Immediately after exiting the tunnel we were onto a "dry slide" and track with a 10 mph permanent slow order "until track seen to be clear", perched on a rock ledge on the shore of Anderson Lake. Beautiful scenery but treacherous terrain for a railroad.

a misty morning on the mountain as we are between tunnels at mile 186.5 on the BC Lillooet sub on the Kelly Lake Hill. sorry, I cannot find the location on the satellite imagery, pretty much a very remote location for photographers as well.

Tucked away in Macalister siding waiting for a south bound train 570 to arrive. A rather threatening sky in the background and some dramatic lighting for this image. shortly after there quite a downpour of rain. After train 570 arrives we will depart the siding with another 38 mile run to Quesnel, ending our 315 mile journey on this day from Whistler. My work day began at 0600 at Whistler, image time was 18:38 and I'll be on duty for another couple of hours. Long day but the scenery is spectacular making the day worthwhile.

Another quick photo while we were stopped awaiting more track authority. Threatening skies with some rain showers along the shores of Seton Lake. I did not have a brush cutter to knock down the shrubbery and was more concerned about sliding down the bank into the cold lake water. Hard to believe, I was actually being paid to run the train.

Paused at mile 142 on the Squamish sub, if I recall waiting for further track authority before proceeding south to Whistler. This brief stop gave me a rare opportunity for "on the ground" photos during the trip. There had been a brief thunder storm and heavy rain just prior to taking this image. A rather dramatic sky in the background and along the shore of Seton Lake.

BCR 711 leading unit on train No32 the PV symbol ready for a sunny morning early departure. I was the head end brakeman on this train. Little did I know at the time of this photo that in less than ten months this unit would have a tragic rockslide encounter on the Squamish sub, plunging into Seton Lake. The Locomotive Engineer barely survived the accident, sadly the Headend brakeman was never found or recovered.

Early morning, train No 32 the "PV" is ready to depart Prince George BC on the BC Rail Prince George subdivision. Two units on the headend and most likely two units cut-in as mid-train remote control units. Generally this train was heavy and mostly through traffic of lumber, pulp&paper as well as refined oil products destined to North Vancouver and points beyond.

Train No 23, "VP" symbol has arrived at Williams Lake for a crew change. The arriving crew from Lillooet will take some rest and then return to Lillooet later that evening. The outbound crew at Williams Lake will spot some TOFC cars at the ramps and then run north ultimately to Prince George. There may be some TOFC traffic to spot at Quesnel.

In a snow flurry, train 570 arrives at Mackin with a few more miles left before a crew change at Williams Lake BC. It was an interesting power consist with BCOL 765, CN 5648 and BCOL 758. A few railfans chased this train the next morning on the Squamish sub account the 765 leading. Also note the car loads of logs behind the units, this would be aspen / poplar logs destined for the "oriented strand board" plant in 100 Mile House.

Train 571 in the siding at Mackin on the BC Rail Prince George sub. Eventually train 570 arrived with BCOL 765 leading, unfortunately a snow flurry arrived and hindered lighting for photos. I was able to contact a rail fan friend to alert him of the 765 leading on the southbound train. He and another fellow chased the train on the Squamish sub the next morning. The BC Rail SD-40's were getting scarce let alone leading.

NAR 300, a combine or comboose take your pick. This car was built in 1899 and was still in regular service when this image was taken, 1982. It was used on a the NAR and way freight job north of Edmonton. Generally between trips it was serviced and stored at what we called the "coach yard" at the downtown CN / Via station. On this day it was coupled to NAR 1602, built by Pullman in 1925.

Train No.9 "The Skeena" ready to depart Edmonton on it's journey to Prince Rupert BC. The train was also nicknamed the Rupert Rocket. It was a bitterly cold afternoon as evidenced by the steam coming from various parts of the coaches.

Early morning meet at Mackin. Train No 38, the "OV" symbol on the last few miles from Prince George to Williams Lake BC. Appears that they made a substantial pickup of copper concentrate, loaded in covered gondolas at Gibraltar. The crew will change off at Williams Lake and the train will continue on over two more subdivisions and terminate in North Vancouver. I was on the north bound "VO" from Williams Lake to Prince George and will return later that evening on the OV and perhaps have a meet here again the next early morning. On the left is Springfield Ranch and beyond that is the Fraser River.

Time table scheduled train No 23 approaching Macalister siding on it's journey to Prince George BC. This is symbol freight "VP" ( Vancouver-Peace) and was the BC Rail hot shot priority train carrying lot of TOFC, perishable, construction materials and other high value traffic. Quite a selection of motive power this day including a RCC car.
