CP 646 with UP 5533 and CSXT 3024 is having no trouble climbing the Niagara Escarpment approaching Quigley Road. It looks like the engineer is enjoying all the attention his train got today. Thanks to all that posted updates on FPON.

Excitement at Brantford in the days past was trainwatching at the station around the dinner hour. So much action. The westbound #75 was often a highlight. Previous years it was quite often an ABBA set, but even these two 'A's back to back made for a glorious scene. Power is VIA 6787 and 6541, with a typical long train of the day. Surprisingly, both these units are still alive. The 6787 is #72 at Napa Valley (CA) and 6541 is now living a new life as CP 1401.

$Four axle GMD locomotives CN 9448 (GP40-2LW), CN 5576 (GP38-2W), and CN 9540 lead an Extra east through CN Hamilton West at fractional mileage on the Dundas sub, near the bottom of the grade from Copetown.<br><br> The gap in the trees where the photographer stood has grown in, but good views remain steps ahead. In 2019 the far part of the CP "S" curve and bridge over CN are obscured, jointed rails are not stockpiled for this main line, and westbound Dundas sub signals are down at Bayview.<br><br> CN 5576 was renumbered to CN 4776 in 1988; it was seen switching railcars in Aldershot Yard on several dates in 2017 in the current www.cn.ca paint scheme.$

Mid day on May 27, 1953 found downtown Hamilton with quite a spectacle as CNR E-10-a 2-6-0 Mogul 88, the lead locomotive on a double headed freight up the mountain, <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=43925>was tossed on her side</a> at the intersection of Ferguson Avenue and Rebecca Streets. This derailment was caused by the lead wheels of 88's tender picking the switch of the Rebecca Street spur, jackknifing the engine causing it to flip. The three crew members onboard; Engineer Charles Penfold (jumped clear), Fireman Richard Day, and head end Brakeman Murray Calder, all escaped with minor injuries. The trailing engine 3506 followed 88 down the spur stopping short of the yard engine working nearby industries. After 3506 and the rest of the train returned to Hamilton Yard after the derailment while the hook works to get 88 back on the rails.<br><br>CNR 88, built as Grand Trunk 1008 by CLC in 1910, renumbered GTR 910 in 1919, CNR 910 in 1923, and CNR 88 in 1951. After this wreck, which cracked the crown sheet atop the firebox, 88 would be sent to Stratford for repairs. Retired in 1957, she would be placed on display <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=24212>as GTR 1008 just east of Morrisburg, Ontario</a> along Highway 2 near the Upper Canada Pioneer Village. Along with it sits the historic Aultsville train station and two GTR coaches. CNR S-1-g Mikado 3506, built by CLC as GTR 486 in 1917, would be scrapped just over 4 years later in July, 1957.

Still a rather barren looking landscape around Bayview Jct., as the days are just starting to warm up. It is early May. A good time to be out as days are brightening, and foliage is not obscuring the "scenery". This is the view looking toward the walkbridge from the junction; it is empty of trainwatchers, this being a Wednesday. Rather healthy looking train, CN 3152 and 3153 westbound. I forget the train number.........but the sun angle indicates it a noon hour move. The "third track", on the left, used to be where the pushers were staged in the steam era, necessary to assist heavy freights up that long Dundas grade thru Copetown. The rail was retained into the 1980s as a stub for MoW equipment and the like. Note the little tool shed. At one time, they were seemingly everywhere.

CP's Nanticoke steel train crosses King Street, pounding the diamond with the CASO sub at Hagersville. <b>Spring Sunrise.</b> As the days get longer the better your chances were of catching the daily freight ex Fort Frances to Thunder Bay arrive into the Lakehead. We are about 40 minutes into the daylight hours as CN A436's tailend passes by me at mileage 15, approaching B/E OCS limits at Evans as the sun peaks above the still stark trees. Another month will pass before any leaves are seen on the trees the Thunder Bay region.
