GTW 5849 leads the 07:00 job "down the hole", crossing Simcoe Street East on the N&NW Spur on their way to spend the morning switching north end Hamilton industries. In true Hamilton fashion, I spent a good length of time kicking garbage out of the shot, only to have a homeless dude show up and park his shopping cart right in the way. Thankfully, he allowed me to relocate his worldly possessions so I could get the photo and not interrupt his scavenging.

With a Saturday agenda that didn't include photographing Trillium Railway, we were surprised when we arrived at Feeder and found no locomotives parked. We had seen JLCX 3502 switching the east end of WH Yard, but expected to find TRRY 1859 and LDSX 8920 at Feeder. We opted for a wild goose chase north to St. Catharines hoping to come across something and luckily, upon arrival at Merriton, TRRY 1859 and train were just getting on to the CN. They had lifted two empty boxcars from WP Warehousing and six new NS coil cars from Steelcon (formerly Trenergy Inc.?), where the coil covers are fabricated and installed. We followed the train back south, where they would lift more completed steel coil cars from a siding in Welland. At WH Yard, where this photo was taken, they had to sort out hoppers from the south siding before calling it a day. The old MLW sounded great sorting the cars. It got me thinking: Is TRRY 1859 the last regularly-operated MLW in Ontario? TRRY 108 was parked at the former Martech site, and OSR still has some RS-23 and RS-18u, but they aren't regularly used.

Little did I know when I posted this photo <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=50643"> http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=50643 </a> late last year that RLK 4001's days are numbered. Long story short, Genesee & Wyoming has made an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency to destroy 88 locomotives due to improper rebuilds and documentation. The locomotives must all be decommissioned and destroyed by December 31, 2025. Poor old RLK 4001 is on that list. The only other Canadian locomotive on the list is CBNS 1705. My most recent photo of RLK 4001 was taken September 1, 2021 at Nanticoke trailing GEXR 2303.

Some locomotive consists last for months on CN 580, while others do not. Naturally, this colourful duo only lasted two days! They worked around Brantford on this Wednesday, ran to Caledonia and Hagersville on Thursday, and I think that was it. They were quickly replaced by GTW 6425 (in CN paint) and CN 4798, which of course hung around in Brantford a lot longer. One day 1 of 2, CN 580 is shown in Cainsville with one tank car for Blastech to be relined, and six loads of lumber to be unloaded at Rembos.

RLK 4001 and GEXR 3821 lead a train southbound on the Exeter Sub. on a beautiful Fall day. Photographed at Roman Road between the dots on the map known as Vanastra and Brucefield. Now fifteen years later, both locomotives are still with us in Southern Ontario. RLK 4001, with the Rail America logo on the nose and Lakeland & Waterways logo on the hood painted over, is assigned to Southern Ontario Railway operating out of Garnet / Nanticoke. GEXR 3821 went off for rebuild and returned as GEXR 2073 in Genesee & Wyoming orange and black.

The crew using NSCX 11 takes a break while NCSX 12 switches two CP hoppers around in the distance. From this angle they look the same, however #12 has angled white stripes on the sides of the hoods, whereas #11 does not. No sign of the SW1001s today. Shortly after I took this photo, CN came in to lift new TCMX hoppers and NKLX coil cars, the highest car number being NKLX 400096 for those keeping track.

I was asked for a photo of one of the NKLX coil cars at National Steel Car. This photo is the best I can do. NSC 11 was busy switching on this Friday morning, and I managed to get a few decent photos of it. Lack of convenient parking near the plant is an issue, and I had left my car in a less than stellar location for this and my previously posted photo, so I didn't stick around too long. I recommend parking on Beach Road and walking down to Burlington Street if you plan on sticking around a while. But not too long, because the security guard may come out of his booth, arms flailing.

The Donut Stop on Parkdale Avenue was calling to me, so on my day off today I paid them a visit. Since I was in the north end anyway, I too was curious to see if one of the Korean SW1001s was working at National Steel Car. Kenilworth Avenue North parallels National Steel Car's property, but it's busy with trucks going in and out of Dofasco. The switchers may have still been parked where Steve caught them yesterday, but it was tough to see and today there was several rows of new rail cars parked in the way. NSC 11 was bombing around switching cars around their yard as it often does, so at least I was able to get a decent photo of it. And I got donuts, so I can't complain.

National Steel Car 50 tonner #11, acquired new by NSC in 9/1954, suns itself on a quiet weekend afternoon. The 68 year old GE will soon be replaced by SW1001's from Korean National Railroad, acquired via locomotive dealer National Railway Equipment. NSC is right in my own backyard and I can count on one hand how many photos I have of NSC GE's. I'm interested to see what their new switchers look like.

The Woodstock Job with OSR 1244 and 1210 slows to allow a ballast regulator to move west so they could clear the west wye switch at Cami to then reverse their train of auto racks into the yard. They sure sounded good shoving up the hill to Cami.

CN 4906 has been assigned to CN 580 in Brantford for the past few weeks, and for the most part it has alluded me. Today I arrived at the CN yard to find the unit sitting in perfect sunlight... mostly blocked by a centre beam flatcar. Fantastic. Figuring I was out of luck, I took a photo of what I could and called it good. The crew eventually returned from their lunch break and I later managed to get a decent roster shot. However, I like this photo because it clearly shows the effort someone at CN made to cut "CN" and "4906" stencils to re-number the unit. Aesthetics aside, a fine effort!

Liam's photo posted last weekend of the GO train passing CN Stuart reminded me that the weekday Guelph Sub. train set with a pair of F59PHs is assigned to the evening Niagara Falls train on weekends. It's scheduled to depart Aldershot GO station at 17:41, so I headed down to Wellington Street North Saturday evening to photograph it. A different pair then last week, GO 562 and sister shove the Niagara Falls-bound train through the waist-high weeds of the Grimsby Sub. GO 522 shoving a Toronto-bound train at Bayview in the early 90's is the first train photo I ever took with my own camera. 30 years later; eight of the F59PHs are still going strong on GO, and many continue to soldier on for other commuter agencies.

Another timely text at the end of the workday on Friday led me to take a diversion to the station to net CN 435 with a matched pair of ex. CREX ES44AC, now CN 3974 and CN 3929. Yes, I need to change up my photo locations, however the train was by Copetown when I found out about it and when I hopped out of the car I could already hear the train at Brant Junction! Correct camera settings trumped creativity. This is the first half-decent shot I've got of one of the former Citicorp Railmark Inc. (Citirail) units, so I'll take it.

1973-built Grand Trunk Western GP40-2 6420 sits in front of the 1905-built Grand Trunk Railway station in Brantford. Following their lunch break, the conductor and brakeman were walking to the train as I took this photo, and 580 would soon depart for Cainsville to switch Blastech and Rembos. Today was this first day these two units were assigned to 580 and they have already attracted a fair bit of foamer attention. Hopefully the pair stick around for a while.

After nearly 15 years of faithful photography, my old Nikon D40x had so many ailments it was time to replace it. I ordered a D5600 in November, and nearly four months later it finally arrived. By no means a top of the line camera, it's good enough for my needs, and a vast improvement over the D40x. It's been a struggle to become acquainted with the new camera, but after a month of trial and error, I'm finally getting some decent results. With CN's Dash-8 fleet getting sold off / scrapped / stored, the early Dash-9s with the "Canadian" cab are the next best thing. That being said, it was worth hanging around after work the get CN's first Dash-9 leading 435 in perfect light. Thankfully CN 2500 is one of the units that had the cab repainted; other units in this order have turned very pink. It's hard to believe that even these units are 18 years old this year. Thanks again for the heads up Jazzy.

Both Stuart Street yard jobs have parked by the office for the crews to have their morning coffee break. CN 7524, CN 4726 and CN 9427 had been switching the east end of the yard while CN 7241 and CN 7080 were switching the west end. After break, the GP9RMs would return to switching the yard while the triple-set would put a train together and depart the yard to go switch the north end industrial area. Kudos to the paint crew that neatly repainted the cab numbers on "7241" in the original font!
