NS 1068, the Erie heritage unit, became the 2nd NS heritage unit to find its way in to Canada today on NS H3R from Buffalo. NS 8300, a former CR C40-8, made for a good companion on today's train, seen here lifting their first cut of US bound traffic out of the yard in Fort Erie. Murph's Law, it came over from the US leading long hood forward and in the pouring rain.

I think the crew on 580 was having fun plowing over the construction barrels that a paving contractor moved off the road and placed a little too close to the railway track. It was only when the barrels started to roll out in to the traffic lanes on Clarence Street that the crew got on the ground to collect the rolling barrels and move those that remained standing out of the way.

ARN road power gets serviced outside the shop in Grande Prarie after an overnight interchange run to the CN. The power would sit here for most of the day, until late afternoon when they departed for another overnight run south on ARN train 457. The shop area was full of out of service GE's, with the yard being switched with a pair of leased CN GP38-2s. Not exactly what we drove all the way to Grande Prarie to see.

Its official, on December 20, 2012, Genesee & Wyoming announced that they had received U.S. Surface Transportation Board approval to control RailAmerica railroads. This will be a welcome change to the Southern Ontario Railway. The blue/white RaiLink scheme was always a favourite of mine, but with only RLK 3873 left in service in faded RaiLink colours, a matched pair of locomotives in the Genesee & Wyoming corporate orange/black scheme is something to look forward to in the new year.

A CN maintainer working on the railway preemption has accidentially put the traffic control signal at the intersection of Colborne Street and Clarence Street on red/red flash. One of the City's traffic signal electricians just happened to be driving by and stopped to reset the signal controller. Naturally this occurred at the same time as the once a week local arrived on the scene, causing mass confusion for the motorists on both streets. The story of the Brantford Spur is going to be an interesting one in the coming months. CN wants to discontinue operations on the spur, however Ingenia, the last customer to be serves off the spur is set to put up a fight.

IC 1001 leads 148 past the station in Brantford. The black IC unit contrasted nicely with the white snow.

CN 148 cruises in to Brantford the day after a heavy snow storm that caused a lot of "missed connections" in Chicago, as illustrated by all the empty well cars at the head end of the train.

Here's some more GEXR variety shortly after the lease of the Guelph Sub. began. GEXR 3835 and 4019 sit with GEXR 700 and 901 out of sight, while on the adjacent track GEXR 4046, EMDX 205 and GEXR 4022 are coupled in to a consist.

A month and a half after the start of the GEXR lease the Guelph Sub., GEXR 3834, GEXR 4161, EMDX 204 and NECR 9539 rest in the yard in Stratford, ON.

Late in their careers, four CP MLW’s smoke it up on 509 departing London. These locomotives haven’t fared too well. CP 4240 went to the Morristown & Erie and was later scrapped, CP 1825 went to the Minnesota Commercial but doesn’t seem to get much use, CP 4242 went to the Arkansas & Missouri and has been used as a parts source, and CP 4216 also went to the Morristown & Erie where it sits stored, covered in graffiti.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Amtrak 823 kicked the bucket on the Maple Leaf the day before, and a pair of GP38-2s from CSX’s Frontier Yard in Buffalo was summoned to power the train to Toronto. The following day, the pair of CSX units are seen leading the eastbound back towards Buffalo, passing SOR’s Stuart Street yard in Hamilton.
