About Dave Brook


I started chasing trains after listening to my grandfathers stories of riding steam through the Rockies, and seeing the ore train in Bracebridge. From that I worked for CN/VIA/GO Transit for 6 years before becoming an air traffic controller. I discovered I liked trains more from the outside than in.

I can't really explain how I remember this being Toronto- Winnipeg 215. It was the third of the western hotshots out of Toronto behind 211; all pigs and pool cars to Winnipeg, 217 to Vancouver, and this one cleaned up the details. There was usually a large cut of empty lumber flats on the tail end that would go through to Edmonton, and most to Prince George from there. The C40's were just arriving on the property and this may well have been a first trip west where coal, grain and potash service awaited.

You never really know what might happen. The long story....two days ago, Toronto-Detroit 135 (CP BNSF)had the CP engine fail around Milton. BNSF 4066 was dispatched from London or Ayr where it had been the power on empty rack train 734. At some point after that, 238's 2 CP GE's that were sitting in London were put on 135...or it's return 134. No idea what happened to the failed CP, but the 2 BNSF's were left to power 238 from London to Welland. Which gets us to their return trip to London...in terrible light, so I gambled on 1/20th in the wind and tried to pan. In an mostly GE world, you try to find things to keep it interesting.

One of two GP40s with a high-speed gear ratio(59/18 instead of 62/15) assigned to VIA in the early 80's.They were used almost exclusively on runs west of Toronto.

In the days before directional running, and GE's, CP was SD40-2's....plus the 25 F's. On the mainline out west, that was it. The only question was the number. For most unit trains, 2 or 3 plus 2 mid was standard. The tail end of this train is still on the Cisco bridge as coal loads head for Vancouver.

The road to Orr's Lake Hill west of Cambridge is open again after 6 months. So you'd naturally expect to see 2 KCS GE's lugging a 6 hours late 135 just about to dig into there real grade of the hill.

It's about as dreary a day as an Ontario winter can offer. A sectionman is cleaning out switches at the diesel shop, while on the ready tracks sits what today would be called "heaven". An SD40, 3 M636's and a C630 await their next assignment. Those were the days my friend.

Symmetry. It's why I fell in love with railroading. It started with CN's ore train where I would sit at the station went the family would come into Bracebridge for laundry day. I was lucky enough that my parents would trust 10-year-old me to not get run over while they left to do groceries for a hour or so. I can't remember if Bracebridge still had an operator in those days; I think so but I was too shy to bother them. It graduated to grain trains and a sea or "Trudeau hoppers", all perfectly aligned. Coa; and sulphur trains too. For reasons i can't explain, it doesn't apply to autorack or container trains, but we're all a little eccentric. Which brings us to today; a perfect string of tanks (the idler happily hidden with the power) stepping its way across the Galt Sub as the wind rapidly knocks down too many leaves. Hopefully, the crew was amused as I tried to balance on the roof of my Civic as the wind tried to deposit me back on Mother Earth. While railroading seems to have become a little too ubiquitous...2 GE's and 10000 feet, this is still special.

It's a little game we play on the Galt Sub. Toronto-Detroit train 135 usually has containers that go to Detroit, and also often has interesting trailing units. In Detroit, the power is wyed so the same power returns the next day. But if there is no container traffic for the US, it may terminate in Windsor. Or it may go to the US to lift containers there. There's no wye in Windsor, and in this case, no trip to the US. This provides a fairly rare occurrence of CN leading on CP shortly after sunrise.

The fall colours are starting......well, on the train anyway. I think this also might be a different season Time Machine with http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=917. A lot of trees have come and gone. Nothing stays the same.
