About Dave Brook

I started chasing trains after listening to my grandfathers stories of riding steam through the Rockies, and seeing the ore train in Bracebridge. From that I worked for CN/VIA/GO Transit for 6 years before becoming an air traffic controller. I discovered I liked trains more from the outside than in.

The plows were kind today. It's nice to have a "normal" winter in Southern Ontario. To be clear, we've had nothing like what Muskoka, Bruce and Barrie/ Orillia have had. Ours is manageable. Theirs is not. Last snow, we got 15-20 cm. They got another 50......

BNSF leading on the Galt? Sure, it happens once in a while. BNSF GM leading on the Galt? I'm not missing that. Looking like mother and child elephants, tiny 2254 trails offering encouragement. 137 would drop 2254 at Wolvweron and replace it with UP 7050 for the run to Chicago.

Southern Ontario is finally having a "normal" winter...a little snow on the ground, and mostly below zero temps. It's nothing like what they're getting in Muskoka where Bracebridge got another 45cm overnight. A KCS leader is still a bit of a novelty, and there is a rumour around that when the new units start arriving, a lot of KCS units are going back to their lease holders. I have no idea if that one is true, but a chance to catch 2 leading Detroit-Toronto 134 with the snow flying makers it special.

There's a small train back there somewhere. The beauty of snowday railroading is you can shoot anywhere because nothing 20 feet behind the lead unit is visible :)

Sitting in the "Pocket" at east control, 2007 and 2100 will shortly pull out and tie onto their train for a brake test and departure. The yard job is just shoving back to fill another track at East Control as the constant parade of assembly and departure goes along 24/7. I'm standing between E1 and E2...the longest departure tracks in East Control at the time. I guess technically they still are as C49-53 now extend into the reduced L yard as giant double over and storage tracks.

The other high speed geared GP40 that VIA used to power Tempo trains to Windsor and Sarnia. Scanned from an old print. Surrounded by the other classics of Spadina in the day including ONR power for the overnight train to...at least Cochrane I believe.

No less than 8 units for 471 on this day. The 5 GP40-2's will be power for tomorrow's Ore Train; 730. The lead SD40-2 and 2 GP40's will bring 470 back to Toronto tomorrow. If I'd thought about it, the GP40's will probably be leading, but I wasn't thinking that far ahead in those days.
