About Dave Brook
I started chasing trains after listening to my grandfathers stories of riding steam through the Rockies, and seeing the ore train in Bracebridge. From that I worked for CN/VIA/GO Transit for 6 years before becoming an air traffic controller. I discovered I liked trains more from the outside than in.

![It's only 15 minutes after sunrise, and the heat haze is already taking its toll as 134 charges east out of Cambridge. It seems container traffic to Detroit has dropped off a little as this train didn't have any going west as 135(and this one has none as well), and thus didn't go to Detroit where the power is always wyed. With CP running so many CP/KCS power combos these days, this is the result.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/IMG_6444-Edit-200x150.jpg)

![There are only 9 of these units left now, with 7015's future still to be determined (It went dead to Chicago on 137 yesterday. Where it goes from there will speak loudly about its future). Trailed by KCSM 4077 ( a trailing KCS unit becoming ubiquitous on CP these days;' who saw that coming)and 8112, 137 flies through Drumbo with a cut of mixed freight just lifted in Wolverton. CP was just going Action Red when I started paying attention to trains, so I never got to see this scheme in real life on anything, much less the C630s and SD40s where it looked perfect. But I'll take as much of this as I can get; a scheme that harkens back to when railroading was still great, and service mattered just as much as shareholders; something a few CEOs need to contemplate IMHO.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/IMG_6092-Edit1280-200x150.jpg)

![Welcome to CN. "Why the hell would they start a course when people are still laid off" I overhead in the A building at Mac Yard as I began what to be my life's dream job. 3 weeks of classroom writing out the rule book(to appease the lawyers, no doubt), with tours of the yard, fam trips, and so much more. Questions of why 40-50 GP40-2's sat wrapped like this in L yard during the lingering downturn would lead to an 18-month layoff halfway through my 25 training trips where I was an extra body on a yard crew learning more than could ever be taught in a classroom. More layoffs, a brief stint and Bridges and Structures before being loaned to the Western Divison; just as their traffic collapsed, before being recalled in Ontario in November of 1984......and working 56 straight days in a row when it happened. Such is how quickly traffic can pick up on the railroad.
It was a short career, ending in 1988 having discovered that life on the railroad wasn't quite what I dreamt it would be. But there are moments, memories and stories; some hysterical, some not so much that I will never forget.

![Tipped off that there were three units, you just gotta go. 8942, KCSM 4072 and KCS 4146 have a very short 134 compared to the usual through Galt as the sun tries to come out. GM's are a bonus.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/IMG_5646-Edit-copy1280-200x150.jpg)

![I don't have a whole lot of pictures of the big M's running out their last miles. But while sitting in Milton next to the CN bridge over CP I was lucky enough to have this sight for sore eyes come around the corner. I'm, am still of the opinion that 1990-1997 was the greatest time for railroading in North America. The power was almost always all at the front, trains were plentiful, DPU's didn't exist, someone around the tracks wasn't viewed as a national security threat, release forms got you free tours of the yard, but mostly, that anything might be leading coming around the corner.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/5321313574_61b94fd493_o-copy-200x150.jpg)

![Tis the season of the "sunrise sessions". I'm guessing at least 9000 feet of empty racks and a couple of cars of mixed freight hang on the drawbar as 9718 and 8521 head west half an hour before sunrise.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/IMG_5258-Edit-200x150.jpg)

![Based on the flexicoil trucks, and half size fuel tank, I'm guessing this and its sisters were ordered for the real light rail lines; perhaps north of Stratford. ![I expect KCS leaders to become even more common. They trail all the time, but this still registers as something of a novelty. ![3 SD40-2's and an SD40 have 772...I'm pretty sure that was the number, getting close to Edson with a Coal Valley - Thunder Bay unit coal train. I'll be honest, Edson is not the most scenic place in Alberta, but when get into the mountains towards Coal Valley and Cadomin, it is spectacular. If there had been more work for the guy loaned out on layoff from Southern Ontario, I would have stayed in a heartbeat.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/img279-5-copy1280-200x150.jpg)

![The train that started the madness? The number of people out chasing this 650 on a miserable December day would be difficult to count....and all because 2 KCS Belle's were trailing. Who would have thought that 4 years later, the KCS units would be ubiquitous, while an SD60 leading remains little short of a miracle?](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/0H7A2666-copy1280-200x150.jpg)
