Originally from Dundas, Ont, always had an interest in trains. Worked briefly with the TH&B Rly in Hamilton and then went west to BC Rail 1973 to 2008 working mostly in Williams Lake BC as Locomotive Engineer. Now retired in Nova Scotia.

A view from the cab, looking at the north portal of the Wolverine Tunnel at mile 47.3 on the BC Rail, Tumbler subdivision. This tunnel is a non-ventilated 3.7 miles long. A typical mid-winter scene.

In my collection, a slide from Bruce Mercer. IREX 5 looking pretty clean and capped stack at TH&B Aberdeen yard. I'm not sure but think this unit was out bound on a CPR "Aberdeen Turn" or "Hamilton Turn" and would go up the Goderich Sub to Guelph Junction and perhaps the IREX unit would be setout there for furtherance to Toronto. Perhaps Bruce can add some details.

A bad day for trains and a slide from Ron Tuff. Ron's slide is dated August 5, 1978 and shows the location as Lake Ave. Stoney Creek. I was sent a link to A.W. Mooney image posted of this wreck and he shows it at mile 37.6 Grimsby sub.. Also AW Mooney indicates that this was CN train 387 and it encountered a track switch that had been tampered with by some vandals. Quite a derailment ensued involving four locomotives and numerous rail cars. Thank you Mr. Mooney for the information on your image.
I have not been able to find out how the engine crew fared in this derailment. Hopefully all survived and it must of been one heck of a ride.

A slide from Ron Tuff in my collection, thanks Ron, posted with permission. TH&B 54 doing some work at Kinnear Yard. Not sure what this assignment is or if they have just come up from the Belt Line and switching out the drag. During my brief time with the TH&B, I went on duty at Kinnear Yard 48 times. 47 shifts were various yard jobs that started around the clock. The other time I went on duty at Kinnear was for a east bound detour train June 30, 1972 with EL 2524, 2567 & 2562 for power.

An assortment of units at Tumbler siding. It was a busy spot with a large ground camp housing MoW personel, pusher crews and coal train crews as well anybody else on railway business. Eventually the pusher crews and coal train crews would layover in a new rest house facility in the town of Tumbler Ridge. Photo was taken in the vicinity of mile 61 Tumbler sub.
I could not locate this area on the satellite map.

Heading south on a loaded coal train, at the north switch Tumbler siding. Just over the switch is the wye at Tumbler and in the distance is a ballast train in the siding. The roadbed, track and ballast are just in the final stages of completion on the newly opened BC Rail Tumbler Subdivision serving the long awaited BC "north east coal fields" and coal mines.

The scenery was fantastic, the train trips were long and this late evening image is no exception, "it'll be an all niter".

O&W 9955 one of 8 second hand (O&W) units that BC Rail bought that were previously Oneida & Western. The two tone green does not quite match the BCR two tone green. These units as well as four from Kennecott Copper would be rebuilt and painted in the BC Rail red, white & blue paint scheme. They gave many years of reliable service.

CN 4016 on it's side with 4578 and below that is 4515 with 3641 on the bottom of the heap after a nasty derailment caused after hitting a low boy trailer on the crossing of Nash Road.

It was quite an adventure for me getting there to see the wreck. Just a few months shy of my drivers licence I took the bus all the way from Dundas to Nash Road in the east end of Hamilton and I did not even know where Nash Road was. The HSR drivers were very helpful and after paying 35 cents and several transfers later I found Nash Road.

A bad day for trains and another Kodak Instamatic moment almost 51 years ago. West bound train on the CN Grimsby sub hit a low boy trailer on the crossing at Nash Road in the east end of Hamilton. It was quite a derailment, the crew suffered serious injuries and fortunately non life threatening. It must have been quite a ride down the embankment. I'm not sure which unit was leading, on the bottom of the pile was CN 3641, 4515, 4578 with 4016 resting on the edge of the large concrete bridge over a creek.

Canada Cut & Crushed Stone No 9, pushing empties from the crusher to the loading area at the quarry near Hwy 5.
Do a google for Canada Cut & Crushed Stone for numerous links about this obscure and long gone electric train operation. There are even some pictures by a fellow A.W.Mooney, anybody know him??

Well, a scan of an "Instamatic" print from way back when, most likely summer of 1968. A Canada Cut & Crushed Stone train along the line approaching the Brow dump facility on the escarpment overlooking Dundas. These were pretty unique trains operating on a rather obscure rail line. The railway hauled large rock from the quarry pit near Highway 5 to a primary crusher. I don't know mileage wise how track there was, perhaps 3 or 5 miles if that the electric trains operated on. Portion of the railway was double tracked and most likely spring switches at each end that enabled opposing trains to pass each other.

I was raised on the Dundas area but seldom saw this railway. "The Quarry" was a dangerous place and my parents were quite firm that I was not to go there.

A slide I took late December 1981 or early January 1982 while on a day trip railfanning with a friend. I had never been to Cabin D and I might have some of the geography wrong but sort of figure it was a junction point just west of Bathurst St for the CN Oakville and Weston subs. I understand that Cabin D was preserved and on display at the Toronto Railway Museum, at the old John Street Roundhouse.

Please feel free to chime in with the correct location of where this image was taken and info about the operations there.

An iconic scene of the TH&B 73 leading the "East Local" at mileage 36.90 on the TH&B Welland subdivision, having just clattered over the diamond with the CN Hagersville sub. The East Local was the job that went to Port Maitland and earlier in the morning there would have been the Extra East to Welland, or the few trips I did, it was Coyle Yard. Thanks to Ron Tuff for this image and his permission to post it.

Fraser Discovery on it's journey from Quesnel to Whistler BC. This image at Grebe Drive, mile 307.7 on the BC Rail Lillooet subdivision. With the high sun and white nose on the loco makes it difficult for photos. I much preferred the Rocky Mountaineer paint scheme on this day as compared to the newer paint.

A Ron Tuff photo, posted with permission. Long ago TH&B 53 on Hatt Street in Dundas, Ontario on the TH&B "H&D" branch returning with a couple of loads from Canada Cut & Crushed Stone. Speed limit on the H&D was maximum 15 mph with some other restrictions as well. In my brief time on the TH&B, I had the experience of three trips from Aberdeen Yard out to Dundas on the H&D branch. It was usually the 7 AM, Aberdeen Yard crew that was lucky enough for the trip to Dundas and service the few customers there, Bertrams, Valley City Manufacturing as well as CC&CS "the quarry". The houses in the photo look very familiar but I can't locate them precisely for the GPS location.

In my opinion and others, this is a truly rare image. In all the the BCR photos I have seen in print and websites I have not seen any thing similar with L&HR units leading on BC Rail in their original paint. Unfortunately it was a dull drab day and Kodak Instamatic was not up to the task.

L&HR 25 leading train #48 a few miles south of Chetwynd, perhaps around mile 649.5. L&HR 25 & 26 were bought by BC Rail and eventually repainted in "two tone green" and renumbered 631 & 632. I never did see L&HR 26 in it's original colors. It was a cloudy afternoon and another one of those Kodak Instamatic moments some 46 years ago.
