Originally from Dundas, Ont, always had an interest in trains. Worked briefly with the TH&B Rly in Hamilton and then went west to BC Rail 1973 to 2008 working mostly in Williams Lake BC as Locomotive Engineer. Now retired in Nova Scotia.

Thanks to Ron Tuff for this image. TH&B 53 doing a routine chore of a transfer from Aberdeen yard to Kinnear yard. Ron noted on the slide that this was near Wentworth St. My memory is a little hazy but the tracks in the foreground perhaps are the CN Hagersville sub and the small interchange that TH&B had with CN. Also at one time there was a freight shed in the area.

A slide from Bruce Mercer. Quite a scene B&O 4806 and C&O 4823 leased power to CP Rail heading west on the TH&B Waterford sub with a "slab train" destined to Nanticoke. It must have been a circuitous route and quite the alphabet of railway initials involved. Perhaps someone can add more details about the slab trains and routing.

A splendid image taken by Ron Tuff. TH&B 76 is leading the East Local up the grade at Dewitt Rd on it's journey to Smithville and Port Maitland. The East Local was a good train to chase with it's more or less regular operating time and the bonus of being a daylight job. Thanks Ron for the memory.

Another great shot by Ron Tuff. I would surmise that this is the returning train from earlier this day that ran to Welland and return. Most likely has just made a set out at the west end of Kinnear Yard.

N&W 3725 in the Windsor shop area, being prepared for a trip east. While we were there, the unit had been taken for a trip around the turntable and then couple up to N&W 2700. During processing of this image I noticed below the Engineers window and by the the sand filler hatch the word "scabs" had been scrawled. Wonder what that was about.

The morning commute of the Exeter Switcher, running south from Williams Lake to Exeter, switch the mills there and run back north. With the early morning red sky, we took warning of impending weather.

A misty early afternoon and odd weather. I was riding the second unit, giving my Trainee Engineer some breathing space and spread his wings. Just by chance a few shots taken with my trusty PowerShot 85 as we approached Deep Creek bridge, mile 330 about where the lead unit was. Deep Creek bridge is approximately 1200 feet long and 322 feet high over the creek which is actually Hawks Creek. It was always a thrill approaching the bridge from this curve. The bridge was built in 1920.

There is a song about dashing through the snow, this is Dashnine through the snow. A shot from November 30, 2006, south bound, south of Kersley BC. Kicking up snow and I recall the Conductor using some polite industrial language for me to close the window as the cold air was freezing some of his personal anatomy. I was not able to find this location on the GPS map account clouds.

Another photo from Ray Hoadley in my collection of TH&B X-766 at or near Adams Yard, the industrial east end of Hamilton. The 250 ton Industrial Brown Hoist was used to clean up a derailment in the area. The TH&B crews sure gave this machine some TLC and a great paint scheme.

A photo from Ray Hoadley, taken at Beach Rd, Hamilton as TH&B 53 heads up the Belt Line with Industrial Brown Hoist TH&B X-766 in tow as well as a couple of other cars. Ray must have been standing on the embankment of the subway underpass of the CN Grimsby sub. There had been a derailment in the TH&B Adams Yard and the "big hook" had attended to the scene. In the image there is a bulk head flat loaded with cast iron pipes, one of the cars that had derailed. I recall going through this spot numerous times when I worked for the TH&B. Beach Road was a nasty crossing and mid 1972 a transfer job was heading up the Belt Line and hit a truck at the crossing, killing the driver, some crew members receiving minor injuries and TH&B 56 more or less wedged in the subway overpass.

North bound on the Rocky Mountaineer "Fraser Discovery" and my view of Lone Butte BC, mile 246.2 on the BC Rail Lillooet subdivision. The old water tower is still there and the local villagers have created a small park with some railway artifacts, picnic tables, tourist info booth and a nice grassy area for people to enjoy. I'm not sure when the water tank was built, the railway first went through here in the early 1900's so I imagine there has been some sort of water tank located here since then.It was a long climb south and I can well imagine steam locomotives needing the water tender filled when they reached here. Lone Butte was an "additional flag stop" for the passenger train when it ran. A few miles prior to this image we had passed the highest elevation on the BC Rail system at mile 243.3 with an elevation of 3865 feet above sea level.

My view heading north on a work train and approaching the short Azouzetta tunnel at mile 598.5. The tunnel at one time had doors on the portal to help prevent icing inside. The doors were protected and opened by a watchman,he inspected the tunnel and then would authorize trains through. This was the only tunnel on the Chetwynd subdivision and after the right of way was re-surveyed the mileage was corrected to mile 597.9. Another Kodak Instamatic Moment from long ago.

From December 1973 or January 1974. My view from the caboose near mile 809 or at Nig Creek on the BC Rail Fort St. John sub. We had departed our crew change point at Beatton, mile 816.5 and heading south to our home terminal at Chetwynd mile 659.3. Looking at the images it was a bitterly cold morning. Thank goodness for the two oil heaters in the caboose. The images show a typical train of that era, logs, boxcars and tanks. Also we could have pellet sulphur, wood chips and other general freight as well as TOFC. The track at the time was in reasonable shape and we would rock & roll along at 25 mph. I do not recall why the RS3 was mixed in with the loaded log cars although there are two RS18's on the head end and I don't recall any unit weight or axle restrictions on bridges etc. When I left Chetwynd for the last time in 1976, the track was in rough shape north of Fort St. John with 90 continous miles at 10 mph, making for some incredibly mind numbing trips. Note the TH&B boxcar, a long way from home. Perhaps it had been previously loaded with track spikes from Stelco or farm machinery from MF in Brantford. At the time of this image I had been "out west" less than a year and the TH&B box car was a fond memory of my previous employer, the TH&B. all ancient history and memories. thanks for looking.

On a cold morning in Chetwynd BC, engine 566 is trailing in the consist, most likely just arrived from a Taylor or Fort St John turn. 566 is not showing any railway logo and most likely the PGE logo has been painted over and the British Columbia Railway dogwood emblem has not been applied. The new logo will be made of a stick on type of durable vinyl material.

An early morning in the mountains, running lite engines north on the Tumbler subdivision after pushing and assisting a coal train from Tumbler to Wakely. Not our usual push up the mountain and it turned into a long night and another sunrise. Unable to locate this scene on the satellite. As near as I can recall the picture was taken couple miles or so south of Whitford siding.
