After missing CN L568’s perfect sunny day departure earlier in the week due to an appointment I had a feeling the rest of the week would be a battle to try and get this power set in sun. And wouldn’t you know it that’s exactly what happened. Finally on Friday, during a day where the weatherman had predicted nothing but rain and clouds, lucky sucker holes had developed during my lunch hour.

Here, CN L568 with BNSF GP38-2 2090, BNSF GP38-2 2926 and CN GP38-2 7521 is seen at Nafziger Road, just west of Baden, Ontario after switching industries around New Hamburg. The train would then proceed west to Stratford, Ontario over the Guelph Subdivision.

Freshly repainted CP SD40-2 6066 is captured being moved around the Toronto Yard diesel shop tracks by CP 1240, 1213 and an 8100 series switcher. This was the first CP SD40-2 B-unit that I ever photographed and interestingly enough had it’s painted over windows open.

During early winter snow squalls, many locomotives are seen awaiting their next assignments on the CN MacMillan Yard diesel facility departure/ ready tracks in Vaughan, Ontario. Some of the units included SD40 5187 and GP9RM 7272 with GP9 Slug 272. On July 7, 1993 both 7272 and 272 were released from remanufacturing at the AMF facility (former CN Pointe-Saint-Charles shops) in Montreal, Quebec. They were rebuilt from former CN GP9’s 4208 and 4212.

CN L566 with 4705 and 7025 wait patiently for a Siemens Canada worker to clear the sensors on the ION high and wide detector at Roger Street in Waterloo. Prior to L566’s arrival, an early evening snowfall had coated the area in a fresh blanket of white. Once the sensors were cleared by the worker, L566 was able to proceed north on the Waterloo Spur to the chemical companies in Elmira.

Some lunch hours are more interesting than others and this one was certainly an exception. Here CN L568 heads west through Baden, Ontario on the CN Guelph Subdivision with BNSF 2926, CN 7025 and BNSF 2090.

During an early winter snow squall, various units are seen crowding the CN MacMillan Yard diesel facility tracks as viewed through a window of the tower that overlooks the shop area. At the time, a signed release form was all you needed to tour the diesel shop. Dubbed “CN Operations Exploration” it was literally a create your own adventure throughout every visit.

In fall 1993, my dad and I through another friend had met another railfan that lived in Kitchener named Andy. Up until that point during my first year doing train photography, I always used print film. I had started my train photo albums that spring and they were nicely filling with shots from Kitchener and Waterloo as well as Ayr, Paris, Woodstock and the London area. Not long after meeting Andy, he had invited myself and another friend to a train slide show as he had been photographing trains since the early 1980’s. I had never been to a slide show before, however by the time the last slide dropped in the projector, I knew I had shot my last roll of prints. Seeing all the older slides blown-up on screen looking like they had just been taken yesterday was enough to convince me to make the switch. Andy had travelled all over the US and Ontario photographing trains and the one place he frequented often was Toronto. After seeing his stuff, I immediately went home and convinced my dad we had to go!

So the story goes, during two separate Saturday mornings during late 1993, my dad, Andy and another friend had headed east in my dad’s plumbing van to Toronto. By now my Kodak camera was loaded with my first roll of Kodachrome slide film. As we entered CP’s Agincourt yard I immediately knew it might be going to be used rather quickly seeing all the locomotives sitting by the diesel shop and switching the various tracks.

Here one of the highlights during one of those mornings was photographing big M-636 4739 at the shop knowing that it could be retired soon. This scan shows 4739 coming to life as shop crews start it up while several other MLW’s look on including fellow M-636 4723.

Back in September 1993 CN completed a large-scale bridge replacement west of Paris on the Dundas Subdivision. This resulted in CN rerouting trains not only on their Guelph Subdivision, but also detouring across Canadian Pacific’s Galt Subdivision for several days. In the west, the trains would begin their journey to the Galt Subdivision through the interchange track at Woodstock then onto the CP St. Thomas Subdivision for a short stretch before reaching the Galt mainline.

During one of those detour afternoons, I left school early and my dad and I drove to Wolverton to hopefully catch a CN train on the CP Galt Subdivision. We were heading to Woodstock but made a brief stop as this had become one of our favorite spots to railfan at the time. If memory serves we actually didn’t have to wait long until the scanner crackled and a headlight came into view from the west.

Here CN 410 highballs through the east siding switch Wolverton with 2111, 2320 and 2117 just as the sun pierces a small hole through the late summer overcast. I remember clicking the shutter of my small Kodak camera as fast as I could to hopefully capture something. More than 30 years later I would say I was able to get one that was semi-decent.
