During a summer evening, CN train 421 is seen performing it’s work at the Kitchener yard with GP40-2L(W) 9511, another GP40-2L(W) and a GP9RM. The GP9RM was either set-off in the yard or continued to Stratford or London. Also, there appears to be a dimensional load behind the power that possibly originated from Babcock & Wilcox on the CN Fergus Spur.

Viewed during an October morning, the caboose shop at CP’s Toronto Yard in Scarborough, Ontario is full of cabooses awaiting attention or their next assignments.

CN GP9RM 4133 leads the 15:30 Kitchener Job through downtown Waterloo, Ontario on the Waterloo Spur as they return from Elmira with two tanks and a caboose. At the time, the Waterloo Grand Trunk station to the right of the train was undergoing an extensive cosmetic restoration. A year later the station received it’s historic building status.

An eastbound CP intermodal train is seen passing through Lobo, Ontario as it approaches the Denfield Road overpass, west of London on the Windsor Subdivision. The consist has a variety of SD40-2’s in various CP paint schemes, including leased GATX SD40-2 903.

In summer 1994, Norfolk Southern trains 327 / 328 were changed over from operating across the CN Cayuga Subdivision between Fort Erie and St. Thomas to running via CN’s Grimsby, Dundas and Talbot subdivisions. On July 29, 1994, NS C39-8 8578 officially led the first 328 on this new routing.

While some did already know of this permanent change, my friends and I had only heard rumblings about the possibility as the news was slower to travel 30 years ago. Until early one foggy morning while waiting at Paris West, we heard a strange American horn blowing on an approaching westbound for the Broadway Street crossing in town. A couple minutes later and I would be shooting my first NS 327 on the new routing with C40-8 8725 leading solo to St. Thomas. Both 327 and 328 would go on to operate via this route for over the next twelve years, until 328 ran for the last time on December 30, 2006.

During an August afternoon, the station platform is bustling with passengers as Ontario Northland Railway train 698 prepares to depart North Bay, Ontario with GP38-2 1803 leading to Toronto.

The morning fog has just lifted in the village of South River, Ontario on the CN Newmarket Subdivision. The old CN station, constructed during 1884 by the Northern and Pacific Junction Railway, is viewed sitting boarded-up with the “Save our Station” sign affixed to the one end over its windows. The sign is viewed here as the village’s railway history was deemed to important to be lost. In turn they were able to see that the station was saved, and it was cosmetically restored in later years. Presently, work began this spring to prepare it for the resumption of Ontario Northland passenger rail service sometime during 2026. The current Ontario government is following through with a commitment to re-introduce passenger service from Timmins to Toronto and South River is one of the stops. Reportedly, it will be the only scheduled stop between North Bay and Huntsville on the re-introduced ONR passenger service. An article in the North Bay Nugget had said that renovating the former train station back to life again was estimated to cost $414,000.

An eastbound CP train is viewed approaching the Komoka (Melrose) diamond crossing on the Windsor Subdivision, with the CN Strathroy Subdivision, situated west of London, Ontario. The consist included GP38-2 3030 and GP35 5012. At the time, the entire fleet of CP GP35’s was assigned to Western Canada and one straying this far east was very un-common. In August 1996 GP35 5012 was released from CP’s Weston Shops after conversion to control cab-daughter slug 1125. It was mated with GP38-2 ‘mother’ 3035 and assigned to Winnipeg. It was ultimately retired in October 2012.

The crew of CPKC H70 have a great view for lunch as they pause over the Grand River in Kitchener, Ontario on the Waterloo Subdivision. The consist included CPKC 3024 and 2207, with GP38-2 3024 having been repainted in a fresh coat of CP red at the AMP facility in Dansville, New York.

During a hazy and humid summer afternoon, the CP Cobourg Turn is viewed heading back westbound to Toronto, Ontario after completing it’s work at Cobourg. The turn is seen passing the Cobourg station name sign with GP9u’s 8241 and 8206.

On September 9, 1991, while travelling southbound at 45mph, Ontario Northland Railway (ONR) train 122 “The Northlander” was unintentionally diverted off the mainline through an open switch at Mile 225.8 of the Newmarket Subdivision in North Bay. The train had just been turned over to CN control for its journey to Toronto. Now lined on a siding, the train collided with CN SW1200RSu 7304 that was on a yard assignment. The switcher was sitting 257 feet from the main track, situated on a wye, waiting for the passenger train to clear. The resulting collision caused injuries to 60 passengers and 11 railway employees with 67 being minor and 4 serious. Many of the passengers were injured when falling luggage from overhead baggage compartments became projectiles. ONR FP7A 1517, which was leading 122, was heavily damaged and its cab was entirely separated from its body, which had overturned. Trailing unit FP7Am 1985, was being used as an electric generator had also derailed and suffered damage as well. Both ONR units were retired following the collision while CN 7304 would go on to be repaired after suffering significant damage to its cab. Ironically, it is still operating today at the Steel Centre in Parkdale Yard in Hamilton.

Almost three years after the collision, FP7Am 1985 is pictured languishing in the tall weeds seemingly forgotten at ONR’s deadline situated in the North Bay Yard with its wreck damage evident. According to the Trackside Guide the unit was retired in 1993 and was eventually scrapped in 2000.

CN SW1200RSm 7311 is viewed pausing near the Highway #7 overpass at MacMillan Yard in Vaughn, Ontario. The crew had just re-aligned the switch and were preparing to head back into the yard after switching the newly built fuel transloading facility.

I would be lying if I said this one didn’t catch me by surprise. During my one visit this past August to the Highway #7 bridge that spans CN’s bustling MacMillan Yard in Vaughn, Ontario I spotted a CN switcher off in the distance deep within the yard. In 2023, CN had opened a new Cargoflo fuel transloading facility within the yard as well as constructed several storage tankers on site to store the fuel when unloaded. Situated off the W100 lead in the yard, CN had also built five tracks for this transload operation. Not long after my arrival on the bridge, the SW1200RSm came to life and began switching this facility. It’s been decades since I’ve photographed a CN switcher at MacMillan Yard, let alone working, so this was beyond cool to see in 2024.

Here, CN SW1200RSm 7311 is viewed with a lengthy cut of tankers near the Highway #7 overpass with the fuel transloading facility in the background. Reportedly, both CN 7304 and 7311 are owned by a company under a CN subsidiary. However, only 7311 is the last remaining CN SW1200RSm on the current roster with its maintenance performed by CN at the MacMillan Yard Locomotive Reliability Center.

On a humid August evening, the CN 15:30 Kitchener Job has cut away from their cars they brought to Elmira, Ontario and are pictured running around them at the end of track of the Waterloo Spur. Shortly, GP9RM 4114 will begin switching the customers in Elmira, before heading back to Kitchener with darkness eventually overtaking the southbound train.

Pictured rolling off the CP Toronto Yard shop tracks is a consist that could have only been created during the mid-90’s. The consist was heading towards their train that was assembled on the departure tracks at the east-end of the yard. The unique lash-up included; VIA Rail 6458, CP 5608, VIA Rail 6452 and CP 4742. At the time power short CP was leasing anything they could. Also, the big 6 had just been un-retired during the previous winter when the railway had re-activated the remaining operable big MLW-built fleet due to the growing motive-power shortage. As well at the time, the company had a large group of Helm Financial Corporation units leased as part of their rapidly growing mid-90’s lease fleet.

During an early June morning, an eastbound CP train is viewed waiting for a fresh crew at Quebec Street Yard in London, Ontario. The consist included; SOO Line SD40-2 6610, SD40-2 5844 and CSXT GP40 6562. The former Chessie unit was heading to AMF in Montreal, Quebec where it eventually would become HATX 401. And ironically by the fall of 1994 was immediately leased to CP. At the time, the railway had a large group of Helm Financial Corporation units leased as part of their rapidly expanding mid-90’s lease fleet.

During a summer evening, the westbound CP Road Railer train 529 is viewed passing the east end of the yard in Galt, Ontario as it heads to London with a pair of multi-mark GP38-2’s. The tail-end of the train has just cleared the west siding switch Killean in the background.
