At one time, the CN Galt Industrial Spur in Cambridge was a thriving section of track that saw daily service during the week by a local job based out of Kitchener. Branching-off the Fergus Spur near Highway 401, the spur was the regular destination for CN 580 during the 1990’s. Two customers, McPherson and Inglis were situated at the end of the spur where it crossed Franklin Boulevard and provided the bulk of the traffic for the CN local. However, in November 1994, Inglis had announced that appliance production at the factory would be phased out by the second quarter of 1995.

Here in December 1994, CN 580 with GP9RM 4134 patiently waits as Inglis workers completed loading boxcars with new locally manufactured appliances for Canadian markets. At some point in 1995, the facility loaded its last boxcars and closed, leaving one less customer on the spur. Interestingly, both tracks still remain in place today, although disconnected, and the large building is used for office space as well as by children’s clothier Carter's Oshkosh.

A pair of CP westbound trains await fresh crews to Windsor, Ontario as they idle at the west end of Quebec Street yard in London, Ontario. The consists included SD40-2’s 5570, 671 and 5635, while the other had SD40-2 5752, SD40 5531 and SD40-2 5733. CP 671 was former Kansas City Southern SD40-2 671 and would later be remanufactured to CP 5416.

CN SD40-2 5380 is seen on Christmas Day 1994 at MacMillan Yard in Vaughan, only a couple weeks removed from being released from the AMF facility in Montreal, Quebec. The former Union Pacific unit was given upgrades, new paint as well as dynamic brakes prior to entering service on December 9, 1994. The unit was ex-CN 6099, nee-UP 4099.

On February 18, CN L540 was sent from Kitchener westbound to Stratford to plow the Guelph Subdivision towards London ahead of that night’s 87. Upon arrival in Stratford, CN L540 lifted Jordan Spreader # 50948 and track department crews prepared it for it’s run west. The power for L540 was 4725, 4910 and 7512. Later, in the afternoon, CN L568 would arrive in Stratford from Kitchener light power and the crews would swap power.

Here CN L568 is pictured finally departing Stratford passing the station as they begin spreading westward. Reportedly, they made it to a point west of St. Marys before returning east to Stratford later that evening, with that night’s VIA Rail 87 also being cancelled as well.

The westbound “International” to Chicago, Illinois from Toronto, Ontario is making its station stop at Weber Street in Kitchener, Ontario on the CN Guelph Subdivision. Train #85 is powered by Amtrak F40PH 287, which will soon continue on to Stratford. At this time, 85 was scheduled in the morning at Kitchener at 09:34, not long after #84, which was due at 09:06, requiring both trains to have a morning meet not far out of the city.

CN train 380 is viewed paused for its crew change across from the CN office building at London East on the Dundas Subdivision. Powering the Windsor-Toronto train is SD40-2(W) 5298, HR616 2108 and GP40-2(W) 9668. CN 2108 was retired on February 13, 1998 and was part of a group of retired HR616’s later sold to National Railway Equipment during June 1998.

The power for CN 410 has just returned to it’s train on the Dundas Subdivision after working the Brantford, Ontario yard. It’s consist was quite wild and included; CN 9596, LMS 723, LMS 722, GTW 6216, VIA Rail 6419 and CN 9431. Soon it will depart and continue its journey eastward where A.W. Mooney would photograph it that day as well just east of Bayview Jct on the Oakville Subdivision.

While touring around CN’s MacMillan yard diesel shop one November afternoon we stopped to photograph M-420(W) 3507, which had just emerged from one of the bays. A young hostler helper was busy closing engine compartment doors and doing some other inspections, when he spotted us below. “Hey, you guys wanna come up for a ride?” he asked. Well, that question was answered quickly as we all piled into 3507’s warm cab. It wasn’t a long trip, as it was just to put the unit over onto another shop track. However, seeing the shop from onboard a unit was something I’ll never forget, especially from the cab of an M-420(W).

Here, GP9 Slug 253 is seen during our cab ride with a sea of other various CN motive power crowding the diesel shop tracks including GP9RM’s 7081 and 7082, plus a transfer caboose.

CP GP9u 8224 is busy switching the North Bay, Ontario yard situated across from the historic station, which was located at 100 Ferguson Street in the heart of the city. At the time, CP trains still stopped here for crew changes as they travelled on the North Bay and Chalk River Subdivisions between Sudbury (Coniston) and Smiths Falls.

CN International caboose 78105 gets too see at least one more sunset as it awaits its eventual fate at CN’s S Yard in Vaughan, Ontario. Situated beside the Highway #7 overpass the stub-ended tracks were a portion of CN’s MacMillan Yard and used for the storage of older and retired cars, which eventually were scrapped on site.

During a November morning an eastbound CP train is viewed departing the Quebec Street Yard in London, Ontario. The consist included; SD40-2 5793, M-636 4723, GP9u 8207 and SD40-2 5482. High-hood 5482 was ex-NS 3252 and nee-Southern Railroad 3252.

During fall 1994, railway crews were performing extensive undercutting work at CP’s Hunter Street tunnel in Hamilton, Ontario to reduce the actual tunnel’s floor. At the time this work was in preparation for future upcoming GO Transit service through the tunnel and into the city’s downtown. This project resulted in CP detouring some trains over the CN Grimsby Subdivision between Hamilton and Niagara Falls from October 29 to November 1. One of the trains detoured was the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey “Red” Circus train on October 31, which was powered by CP SD40 5550 and SD40-2 5478.

On the morning of October 29, my friends and I were doing our usual rounds in Hamilton, when we heard CP 1817 on the scanner getting a clearance on the CN Grimsby Subdivision. At the time we had no idea about the detour trains or the work being done on the tunnel. Luckily, we weren’t far from Stuart Street, so we made a beeline for the bridge over the yard. Upon our quick arrival, we saw the small crowd of local railfans already gathered there waiting for the CP train. They then gave us the details on what was happening as they were already well informed. Here, CP Toronto-Niagara Falls manifest #526 is viewed passing through CN’s Stuart Street Yard with CP 1817, HLCX 3110, CP 4704 and CP 1843 heading to Niagara Falls.

CN caboose 79817 shows obvious signs of damage as it sits at Burlington West, Ontario on the CN Oakville Subdivision. One wonders if it was ever repaired or was just taken to MacMillan Yard and eventually scrapped.

CP RS-18u 1819 and GP38-2 3038 wait between assignments at CP’s Aberdeen Yard in Hamilton, Ontario with a caboose. Not many CP GP38-2’s were repainted in the action red paint minus the multi-mark prior to the duel flags paint scheme being introduced in 1993.
