On September 9, 1991, while travelling southbound at 45mph, Ontario Northland Railway (ONR) train 122 “The Northlander” was unintentionally diverted off the mainline through an open switch at Mile 225.8 of the Newmarket Subdivision in North Bay. The train had just been turned over to CN control for its journey to Toronto. Now lined on a siding, the train collided with CN SW1200RSu 7304 that was on a yard assignment. The switcher was sitting 257 feet from the main track, situated on a wye, waiting for the passenger train to clear. The resulting collision caused injuries to 60 passengers and 11 railway employees with 67 being minor and 4 serious. Many of the passengers were injured when falling luggage from overhead baggage compartments became projectiles. ONR FP7A 1517, which was leading 122, was heavily damaged and its cab was entirely separated from its body, which had overturned. Trailing unit FP7Am 1985, was being used as an electric generator had also derailed and suffered damage as well. Both ONR units were retired following the collision while CN 7304 would go on to be repaired after suffering significant damage to its cab. Ironically, it is still operating today at the Steel Centre in Parkdale Yard in Hamilton.

Almost three years after the collision, FP7Am 1985 is pictured languishing in the tall weeds seemingly forgotten at ONR’s deadline situated in the North Bay Yard with its wreck damage evident. According to the Trackside Guide the unit was retired in 1993 and was eventually scrapped in 2000.

CN SW1200RSm 7311 is viewed pausing near the Highway #7 overpass at MacMillan Yard in Vaughn, Ontario. The crew had just re-aligned the switch and were preparing to head back into the yard after switching the newly built fuel transloading facility.

I would be lying if I said this one didn’t catch me by surprise. During my one visit this past August to the Highway #7 bridge that spans CN’s bustling MacMillan Yard in Vaughn, Ontario I spotted a CN switcher off in the distance deep within the yard. In 2023, CN had opened a new Cargoflo fuel transloading facility within the yard as well as constructed several storage tankers on site to store the fuel when unloaded. Situated off the W100 lead in the yard, CN had also built five tracks for this transload operation. Not long after my arrival on the bridge, the SW1200RSm came to life and began switching this facility. It’s been decades since I’ve photographed a CN switcher at MacMillan Yard, let alone working, so this was beyond cool to see in 2024.

Here, CN SW1200RSm 7311 is viewed with a lengthy cut of tankers near the Highway #7 overpass with the fuel transloading facility in the background. Reportedly, both CN 7304 and 7311 are owned by a company under a CN subsidiary. However, only 7311 is the last remaining CN SW1200RSm on the current roster with its maintenance performed by CN at the MacMillan Yard Locomotive Reliability Center.

On a humid August evening, the CN 15:30 Kitchener Job has cut away from their cars they brought to Elmira, Ontario and are pictured running around them at the end of track of the Waterloo Spur. Shortly, GP9RM 4114 will begin switching the customers in Elmira, before heading back to Kitchener with darkness eventually overtaking the southbound train.

Pictured rolling off the CP Toronto Yard shop tracks is a consist that could have only been created during the mid-90’s. The consist was heading towards their train that was assembled on the departure tracks at the east-end of the yard. The unique lash-up included; VIA Rail 6458, CP 5608, VIA Rail 6452 and CP 4742. At the time power short CP was leasing anything they could. Also, the big 6 had just been un-retired during the previous winter when the railway had re-activated the remaining operable big MLW-built fleet due to the growing motive-power shortage. As well at the time, the company had a large group of Helm Financial Corporation units leased as part of their rapidly growing mid-90’s lease fleet.

During an early June morning, an eastbound CP train is viewed waiting for a fresh crew at Quebec Street Yard in London, Ontario. The consist included; SOO Line SD40-2 6610, SD40-2 5844 and CSXT GP40 6562. The former Chessie unit was heading to AMF in Montreal, Quebec where it eventually would become HATX 401. And ironically by the fall of 1994 was immediately leased to CP. At the time, the railway had a large group of Helm Financial Corporation units leased as part of their rapidly expanding mid-90’s lease fleet.

During a summer evening, the westbound CP Road Railer train 529 is viewed passing the east end of the yard in Galt, Ontario as it heads to London with a pair of multi-mark GP38-2’s. The tail-end of the train has just cleared the west siding switch Killean in the background.

After having laid over in Kitchener yard for the night, CN test RDC 1501 had an early morning departure testing the rails to Toronto, Ontario the following day. The RDC is viewed approaching the Woolwich-Guelph Townline crossing, west of Guelph as it heads to Silver (Georgetown) on the Guelph Subdivision.

During a hazy summer evening, CN 421 with HR616 2115 and M-636 2328 are pictured working the Kitchener Yard on the CN Guelph Subdivision. According to my slides, the crew is lifting a GP9RM out of the yard to take west with them. Unfortunately, I didn’t record the number of the GP9RM at the time.

A short CP eastbound is seen at the east siding switch Orrs Lake on the Galt Subdivision powered by C-424’s 4227 and 4201. If memory serves, the photo was taken from atop a large gravel hill.

An eastbound CP intermodal train is observed waiting for a new crew at Quebec Street yard in London, Ontario. The train was powered by CP SD40-2 5657, HLCX SD40 4060 and HATX GP40-2 510. Depending on crew availability some crew changes occurred in a timely manner while other trains would sit for much longer waiting.

HLCX SD40 4060 was built in 1970 as Missouri Pacific 760, prior to becoming Union Pacific 4060. HATX 510 was manufactured during 1977 as Boston and Maine 304. Later it would be rebuilt to become Ontario Northland Railway GP40-2 2202.

Amtrak GP40TC 199 is pictured during its station stop at the Aldershot, Ontario station on the CN Oakville Subdivision. This unit was originally built in December 1966 as CN 607 and later became GO Transit 607 upon the formation of the commuter agency during spring 1967.

During a hot summer evening a westbound CP train is seen in the siding at Orrs Lake, Ontario on the Galt Subdivision preparing to meet an eastbound. This consist was quite wild even by mid-90’s standards as it included GP38-2 3030, M-636 4721 and GP35 5012. While seeing a big MLW still in operation was awesome, which had now been given a blanked-over cab during reactivation at St-Luc, the real draw was GP35 5012. At the time, the entire fleet of CP GP35’s were assigned to Western Canada and one straying this far east was very un-common. Even in all my trips to CP’s Toronto Yard diesel shop, I never photographed or saw another one after this.

M-636 4721 ran for almost one more year before it was “re-retired” on July 5, 1995. While on August 2 ,1996 GP35 5012 was released from CP’s Weston Shops after conversion to control cab-daughter slug 1125. It was mated with GP38-2 ‘mother’ 3035 and assigned to Winnipeg. It was ultimately retired in October 2012.

It’s an absolute stunner of a summer day as Goderich-Exeter Railway train 581 is observed completing its switching duties at the picturesque Goderich, Ontario harbor. Powered by veteran GP38-2’s RLHH 2111 and HESR 3510, the train made two runs down to the harbor on this afternoon to lift and set-off sizeable cuts of salt hoppers. While it once ran daily, GEXR 581 is now operating as required to Goderich from Stratford on the Goderich Subdivision.
