6/02/21 GO MP54AC #668 is shoving hard on its consists as it heads up the Newmarket Sub towards Barrie, Ont. The locomotive is just passing Wallace Ave, in The Junction area of Toronto. The big water tower in the background has an interesting history.

Canadian General Electric (CGE) Ward Street Works plant in Toronto's Junction-Wallace Emerson neighbourhood, which is famous for its towering wooden water tower.

The factory, built in the early 1920s at 224 Wallace Avenue, once manufactured lamp bases and electrical supplies. It has since been transformed into vibrant creative, studio, and commercial spaces. The old plant even served as the former home of video game developer Ubisoft.

The CGE complex is best known for a few distinct, prominent local landmarks:
* The Wooden Water Tower: It is one of the very last original wooden water towers still standing in the city. The City of Toronto gave it heritage status in 1993.

* The Ghost Sign: Painted high atop the water tower is a faded, historic sign that reads, "Canadian General Electric Company Limited - Ward Street Works."

This photo will never be seen again due to the Metrolinx expansion of the Newmarket Sub. If you visit today, they have installed a second track. Sarting at Bloor St the double track rises up to a grade that eliminated the very busy CP/CN diamond at West Toronto. The times, they are a changin

8/11/01 The summer sun has not even set at 8:21pm as my train is in the siding at Beare on CN's York Sub. The RTC put a lot of faith in me to get my train in the clear before the eastbound hotshot was on the approach to Beare. The RTC was very happy.
In front of my train is a dwarf signal displaying red and somehow I was able to catch the headlight of the eastbound train as it moves under the bridge carrying CP's Belleville Sub.

3/19/16. My Mac Yrd bound train has just crossed over the diamond at Brampton,Ont on CN's Halton Sub as we meet a westbound freight lead by ex AT&SF "gull wing" C40-8W(ATSF 841 BNSF 841 ). Now numbered CN # 2182. I was so happy when the company put in a
One Way Low Speed / OWLS" diamond, so the CN trains no longer had to do 30mph(50mph now) crossing the old diamond. The diamond at Carew on the Dundas Sub also has an OWLS crossing.(60mph)

2/7/03 GMD London built BNSF ex Sante Fe GP60M #146 sits on the outbound shop track at Mac Yrd. 146 is coupled to a BNSF GP9B 1700
The once proud Sante Fe Warbonnet painted in the (then new) Super Fleet livery(thanks Mike Haverty) is a shadow of its former self. BNSF 146 is still on the roster, but now downgraded to local service and are designated GP60M-3
The GP60'S were one of the last high horsepower locomotives built by GMD.

5/19/16 An eastbound to Mac Yrd train led by CN #8101 moves through the turnouts at Tansley and onto the north track that runs between Tansley and Ash on the Halton Sub.
CN 8101 ex EMD 1208 is one of 4 SD70ACe-P6, Ex-EMDX Demonstrator units that CN purchased. 8101 is painted in CN's latest paint scheme. A far cry from the EMD silver and blue demo colours!

Ex Southern Pacific SD40R 7353 sits at Mac Yard on 6/20/2004
Southern Pacific Railroad SD40R 7353. Built as road number 8449 in April 1966 on EMD Order 7861, it was rebuilt to SD40R 7353 in February 1981, retired from the UP December 23, 1998, later became NREX 7353, and later still became FWWR 2016

I don't use another persons photo, but you can look up this locomotive on Google and see what it looked like in its prime.

That's what friends are for! 5/21/16 my conductor and I are on the ground at Ash on the Halton Sub to do our Rule 110 as a couple of my buddies heading west, give us the double wave going by our train. I really miss railroading, especially the awesome people I worked with????

Face to Face. 4/14/16. CN SD60"s 5475/5419 (ex GMTX 9063/9055)
await servicing at Mac Yrd diesel shop.

Canadian National (CN) acquired 90 second-hand EMD SD60 locomotives originally built for Oakway Leasing (later managed by GATX/GMTX). The former GMTX/Oakway units were repainted and upgraded to CN specifications, and assigned to the CN 5400–5489 number series.

Background: Built between 1984 and 1995, these 3,800-horsepower locomotives were leased to Burlington Northern and BNSF in an Oakway blue and white livery before CN purchased them around 2012.
Acquisition Details: CN purchased a large batch of ex-GMTX/EMDX SD60s to offset power shortages. The transaction included 90 units in total. [1, 2]
Operational Status: While most were upgraded and repainted into CN's standard paint scheme (and many saw heavy mainline use, such as on train L506 in Minnesota), several have been sidelined for maintenance or retired as the fleet ages.

A stranger in town. On 4/24/03, NS SD40-2
#3329 painted in Maersk Sealand livery, awaits assignment on track 29 at CN's Mac Yrd diesel shop.

History: Originally built as Conrail #6358 in 1977, it was later acquired by Norfolk Southern.
The Paint Job: Painted in a striking light blue and white Maersk Sealand scheme in 2002.
Purpose: It was painted for a promotional campaign and grand opening of a new Maersk facility on Terminal Island, California, as well as to celebrate railway/shipping partnerships following the enlargement of tunnels for doublestack containers.
Current Status: It has since been retired from its Maersk livery and repainted into standard Norfolk Southern "Horse Head" black.
I think a trip through the locomotive wash track is in order.

4/15/2016 my westbound train led by ET44AC 3006 is stopped at the classic Georgetown station waiting for an eastbound to clear at Silver on CN'sHalton Sub.

The railway station was designed by Grand Trunk Railway and was built between 1855 and 1856.
In 1923, it became the Canadian National Railway and later became the VIA Railway. GO Transit service began in 1978.
The station once had a water tower for steam trains. Today it is a single-storey, stone, railroad station with a corner tower.

This is a very unusual piece of railway equipment with a specific purpose
HEPX 2000 is stopped waiting for a train to clear. Because of the size
of the transformer, we have multiple restrictions across the entire route.
Including not being allowed to have other trains beside our train.
Makes for a very long day!
On 5/8/2016 we moved this transformer from Hamilton to
Ontario Hydro's Pickering Nuclear power plant.

On 5/15/2016 westbound ES44AC 2823 moves through the turnouts on the very short piece of single track at Stewarttown Mile 26.6 on CN's Halton Sub just west of of Georgetown.
I know that you foam..er i mean fans out there will know the answers to these questions.
Why is there a broom on the front of the locomotive?

What is the reason for the red light above one of the ditch lights?

What are the white objects on the roof of the locomotive for?

May 19/2016 my train is on the double portion of the CN's Halton Sub between Mansewood and Milbase waiting for eastbound SD70M-2 8960 east as the train moves through the long super elevated S curve.
To the right of my train is the "Milton Hilton" as its nicknamed.
Its the Maplehurst Correctional Complex. We joke that any escapees could easily hitch a ride on the train????

Torpedoes away! 9/5/2001 GTW "Torpedo boat" 4520 is the middle unit of my consist getting ready to depart Oshawa, Ont after making a lift of cars from the General Motors auto plant in Oshawa. I can't tell the road number from this photo, but the lead unit is either a MLW 630 or 636. While my trailing unit is the ubiquitous GP40-2W #9519

To B on not to B? July 2/03 at Mac Yard outbound shop track BNSF GP9B #1700 a very rare unit in general, but to be this far from home rails is unusual.

BNSF 1700 is an EMD GP9B locomotive. Built in the 1950s for Northern Pacific as #267. Burlington Northern (BN) rebuilt from wrecked GP9s. As of this date, BNSF had 4 GP9B's on their roster.

Westbound GO/Metrolinx cabcar #308 crosses over from #1 track to #2 track at Burlington West on CN's Oakville Sub. The signal bridge in the background are the westward limits of GO/Metrolinx owned trackage. Meanwhile my eastbound freight train is moving through the crossovers as we head up the north track of CN's Halton Sub.

CN ES44AC # 2800 entered the Halton Sub at Burlington West and half this train is still on the Oakville Sub. 2800 is heading eastward on the south track as it passes Tamarack Lumber on July 21/2016 as my train 421 heads westward towards Aldershot, where we will make our fist stop before heading to Ft. Erie. Ont

Holy happenstance Batman! Meanwhile....at the batcave. Yes, we know it as the batcave. I am actually standing underneath 2 tracks of CN's Kingston Sub just west of Liverpool where the York Sub meets the Kingston Sub. I was trying to capture the westbound GO/ Metrolinx commuter train on the GO Sub as it approaches Durham Jct when a westbound CN freight popped into the frame. CN SD70M-2 8016..aka thunder wagon is just about to cross over The Worlds Busiest Highway at Liverpool as it starts its 10 mile climb up to McCowans and onward to Mac Yard.

London bound via the "back way" VIA #87 is just about to negotiate the crossovers under the Strachan Ave overpass. There have been many changes in this area over the past 40 plus years. Long gone are Cabin D (preserved at the John St roundhouse), the Spadina coachyards and the infamous former site of Toronto's malodorous slaughterhouse/abattoir. The 2 tracks to the left will become part of the double tracked Newmarket Sub.

[Editors note: Railway employee photo, it's taken and share'd here so you don't or can't do this] So long searchlights :-( The urban sprawl is clearly evident from this view looking eastwards to the downtown core of The Big Smoke (Toronto). I don't know about you but I kinda liked the days where the city was not separated from Lake Ontario and high rises did not dominate the skyline. I have no idea how anyone can pay over 1 million dollars to live on an onramp of the Gardiner Expressway?But I digress.... The searchlight signals are still standing guard at the northwestern entrance to the USRC (Union Station Rail Corridor) off the Weston Sub. For how much longer is anyone's guess?Eventually there will be 8 tracks here when all the work is done. The track to the very right is the CP's Galt Sub. The hooded LED signals for now are turned away from the tracks until they are called to service.Get those searchlight signals while you can.
