VIA's #1 has just crossed the CP diamond at Davenport and is headed north to Snider before its will wye the train and head east on CN's York Sub and north on the CN Bala sub on its journey to Vancouver. According to the VIA website: Classes Both Sleeper Plus (cabins for 1 and cabins for 2 only) and Economy classes will be offered, but Prestige class will not be available. Seating Passengers will be required to remain in their cabin and assigned seat. Meals The Dining car will be open to Sleeper Plus passengers for breakfast and dinner. A reservation system will be in place to allow and control access. Lunch will be provided in-cabin only and will have to be eaten in cabins. The menu and bar service have been modified. A new at-seat food cart service will be offered in Economy class. The menu and bar service have been modified. Park car and Skyline Unfortunately, the Park car and Skyline car (lounge/dome cars) will not be accessible to any passengers. I am not sure about you, but the biggest attraction about taking the train across Canada is to see the country in one of the Budd domes. I think I would rethink my trip until I had access to the dome car.

The first westbound Toronto-Vancouver run of VIA #1 in over a year is about to cross CP"s North Toronto Sub at Davenport diamond on Metrolinx's Newmarket Sub. F40PH-3 6453 and its brethren lead a shorter than usual Covid consist. Hopefully the transcontinental train will return to its 18 plus size soon.

I have had my Mavic Pro drone for over 2 years now but really have not had much time (or too lazy) to get out and really learn to use it properly. I took the drone for a spin today. Thought I would do a photo where the tracks cross over one of the worlds busiest highway (401). Train 271 with SD75I 5707 starts its uphill climb to McCowans on the York Sub at Liverpool. I have operated many trains over this bridge in my years as a locomotive engineer.. Boy do I miss it.????

One of my most favourite shots! I know how lucky I have been to live my boyhood dream of being a locomotive engineer. I was blessed to have the biggest train layout to operate.For me this shot captures the sights, sounds and smell of railroading at its best.3021 departing Mac Yrd on the Halton outbound track while I follow an eastbound up to Jane St as it enters Mac Yrd on the Halton inbound . My train will wait for a better signal to enter the yard. I would hang up my throttle about a year after I took this shot. Not a day goes by that I don't miss being an engineer.

Happy Valentines Day! Although I shot this from my locomotive as I passed Burlington West in 2016, I thought it was a good shot to share with my fellow "foamers" some of the changes that Metrolinx will make starting February 14/20. On February 14th 2020, it will be the last day of operation of the Toronto RTC Center. The last territory will be transitioned in 2 phases. At 0030 on February 14 , the following territory will be moved to Edmonton and remain under CN control. The limit of the territory consisting of: Halton sub mile 0.0 to mile 43.1, York sub mile 6.5 to mile 25.0 and Bala sub mile 16.02 to mile 29.8 At 0230 on February 15 , the following territory will be moved to the Metrolinx RTC Office and will be under the control of Metrolinx RTC. The limit of the territory consisting of: Oakville sub mile 1.1 to mile 32.06, Newmarket sub mile 3.0 to mile 62.8, Weston sub mile 1.9 to mile 16.8 Pearson sub mile 0.0 to mile 1.8 and Bala sub mile 2.1 to mile 16.02 I not sure if the radio frequencies will be different, but I am sure those who listen in will have no problem monitoring the train movements. A very big day for Metrolinx for sure!!

This one is for you James. I was the relief crew for 372 (3055) this day. Beside me is 394 which is waiting to a signal to proceed to Mac Yrd. If you look to the left of the passenger canopy you can see another freight train on track one! A trifecta for me that i just noticed. I don't remember the train number on track one, but i do know that its very rare to have 3 eastbound freight trains converging at Bramalea GO. There must not have been any westbounds out of Mac Yrd at that moment. You got to love railroading!

Its a bird? Its a plane? No its a flying caboose! My good friend and fellow engineer (VIA) Dave W shot this photo yesterday of his caboose being lifted over the home he just sold in Willowdale, Ont before it was loaded on a flatbed truck on its way to a good home at the Halton County Radial Railway (to be confirmed). Dave had always wanted a wooden caboose but they were hard to find in decent condition condition. Luckily I was working as a brakeman in the mid 80's on a transfer job that CN operated from Mac Yard to Leaside via Oriole (CN Bala Sub) and the CPR to Leaside when I noticed an abandoned CN 78653 in Leaside. After some inquiries Dave was able to purchase the van from CN and had it moved to a friends land between the CN and CP mainlines at Newtonville, Ont. CN 78653 sat in Newtonville for many years until Dave bought an home with an acre of land near Yonge St and 407. Dave extensively rebuilt CN78653, including new tongue n groove boards outside, insulation, 2 original oil burning stoves and many other original touches, but the best part...the original CN red paint and CN "serves all Canada" maple leaf logo purchased from CN. The van was used a a pool house for all the years Dave and his family lived in Willowdale. With retirement from VIA pending Dave put the house up for sale and did not have any plans to take the caboose to his new property in Ballantrae, Ontario but wanted to give CN78653 a good home with fellow rail enthusiasts. Hopefully many generations of railfans will be able to enjoy this icon of Canadian railroading for years to come. Thanks for preserving and this classic CN caboose Dave.

The new span moves past brand new Metrolinx MP54AC 765 at the VIA TMC . Replacing the span that was built in 1911, the new structure will undoubtedly last well past 100 years of railway service!

The property holds historical value as the bri dge was constructed to carry a portion of the Grand Trunk Railway and it incorporates abutme nts from a previous Great Western Railway bridge. The Grand Trunk played an important ro le in Ontario’s development history, and Toronto’s railways connected it to new markets and contributed si gnificantly to its growth and regional dominance. In terms of contextual value, this bridge contributes to a landscape of bridges and underpasses along the mouth of the Humber River. As an ear ly bridge across this portion of the Humber (integrating portions of an ev en earlier bridge), it remains important in supporting the character of this area, which is defined by connective infrastr ucture clustered on the Humber, traversing green space and industrial land. The br idge is physically, functionally, visually, and historically integrated with its surroundings, as it carries track across th e Humber River. It is visually connected to Lake Shore Boulevard and The Queensway, and access to the underpass is linked to the Humber River Recreational Trail. The new span being pushed into position where the crane will move it over to track #1 to be lowered into the Humber.

The Humber River CN Railway Bridge crosses th e mouth of the Humber River, south of The Queensway and north of Lake Shore Boulevard and the Gardiner Expressway. Constructed in 1911 for the Grand Trunk Railway, this four-track ra ilway bridge consists of steel plate girders spanning a concrete substructure. Two spans are carried by a central stone pier and abutments, which incorporate portions of the nineteenth century stone a butments that supported the Great Western Railway bridge that previously occupied the site. The property holds physical value as a unique integration of 19th a nd early-20th century bridge construction methods and materials. Subs equent modifications to enable the bridge’s ongoing use have not significantly de tracted from its integrity and legibility as an amalgam of construction techniques from two distinct periods. The old span is moved on to the waiting flatcar. It will be secured for movement to Mimico. The Western Bridge Co. Designed and built this span crane specifically for this job. It was assembled on site the night before the first span was removed.

Well I promised you a unique perspective on the Metrolinx Humber River bridge replacement project as it takes shape over what was supposed to be 9 consecutive weekends. The project is ahead of schedule, so trains will run on the west Lakeshore Line this turkey day long weekend. Hope you enjoy. After months or preperation, the first span (there are two per track) off #1 track is lifted out of the river and will be moved into position of a waiting empty flatcar where it will be taken to the back of the VIA TMC and cut up for scrap.

THE BIG LIFT. Well all of the planning and preparation is finally coming together. Metrolinx replacement of the Humber River Bridge started a long time ago. They waited until the CNE was over and for the past 2 weekends they have been getting things in position for the big lift. This coming weekend and for the next 7 weekends starting on Friday nights until Monday mornings. The specialized gantries are in position to remove the old spans that will be placed on waiting flat cars and the new spans (also on flatcars at VIA TMC) will be put across the river. You can see it all taking place from the pedestrian bridge over the Humber River on The Queensway for the next 7 weekends.

Absolutely amazing watching the process of rail replacement on the Oakville Sub at Humber. The panel tracks for the approaches to the Humber are built off site, then loaded on these really cool remote controlled self propelled trolleys (8 in total). When the panel track is in position on the track next to the one being replaced, the robot gantries that are sitting on top of the new rails put their arms down on to the ballast and lift the panel track up and off the dollies. Then the 8 trolleys are remotely removed from under the panel track. The gantries which can move vertically and horizontally now can move the panel track over towards the graded roadbed and set into place. Fascinating!!

I guess you must be a pretty important customer to have your own personalized railroad tie. Brand new track, brand new ballast, pandrol clip and brand new concrete rail tie for Metrolinx/GO. This track is part of the new approach tracks leading towards the Humber River. Over the next 7 weeks the bridge spans will be replaced with new ones as the over 100 year old bridge is replaced.

Well all this talk of trackmobiles working on subdivisions that will be taken over by CN shortly got me thinking. Fortunately I had one working near my location last night. This GO Rail King G6 has a hold of 6 air dump cars that are being used to provide ballast for a track and switch replacement at Canpa. RK320 Cummins QSB Tier 4 Final Engine. Provides up to 46,550 lbs of tractive effort. Sounds like even trackmobiles are becoming eco friendly.

So did you ever wonder how they connect 2 pieces of ribbon rail and the process it takes? Railroad tracks used to be joined with fish plates, metal gussets bolted across the sides of the joints between tracks. Now they are welded into continuous ribbons of steel. But the process is different than you might imagine; instead of using arc welders, oxy-acetylene welders, or gas shielded welding equipment, the people doing the work are likely to use a process called thermite welding. After the ends of the rails have been ground clean and positioned approximately one inch apart they are encased in a hollow form and preheated with a powerful torch. A crucible is placed over the form and filled with thermite, a readily ignited aluminum-based powder that burns at about 4,500 degrees F. After being lit with what looks like a 4th of July sparkler the thermite turns its constituent parts into molten metal, which pours into the form below—filling the gap between the rails and welding them into a single piece of steel. The form is removed, the excess metal is beat or chiseled away, and the joint between the rails is ground smooth. Start to finish, the process takes maybe an hour to perform. These newly bonded rails are held to the concrete ties with Pandrol clips. A very different means to hold the rail to the tracks than the traditional railroad spike and wooden tie.

So this little guy tells quite a story. The year he was placed in this railroad tie (sleepers in the UK) , the wooden pieces that railroad tracks are secured to was 1941. England and the Commonwealth had already been at war with Nazi Germany for 3 years. The Battle of Britain was over. America was not yet involved in the conflict. Average Cost of new house $4,075.00 Average wages per year $1,750.00 Cost of a gallon of Gas 12 cents Average Cost for house rent $32.00 per month Beautyrest mattress $39.50 Average Price for a new car $850.00 Apples, 25 cents for 2 pounds Bacon Sliced 59 cents per pound . And this railroad date nail was placed in the wooden tie 77 years ago! Railroads used them to know the exact date the tie was placed in the roadbed. Amazing that it has survived this long when most railroad ties are replaced about every 25 years. I am not sure if its that says anything bad about railroad maintenance, but the nail was on a 100 yr old bridge over the Humber River that is being replaced in September. Of course I removed it and took this little piece of history home.

Metrolinx/GOtrain # 829 pulls into Oriole station. The train is the first of the evening rush hour trains and will only go to Richmond Hill station before flipping back as an equipment move southward.
