One of the best thing's about rail fanning in the prairies is the ability to shoot from sunrise to sunset with no obstructions on the horizon (i.e. mountains). It's 20:02 and the prairie sun is not far from ending another day. In the foreground an eastbound CN intermodal is seen passing through Allan SK.

I had originally set up this shot to capture the glint from an approaching westbound's headlights on some stored ballast cars in the backtrack at Swansea but things didn't go as planned. It turned out that a meet was taking place and the first train to arrive would be an eastbound on the closest track headed away from me with its lights extinguished, drat! But all was not lost, the first dozen or so cars on the eastbound were gondola's so when the westbound neared and turned on the brights after passing the head end of the eastbound, the light fell nicely over both sides of the eastbound and with a quick exposure adjustment I went away satisfied.

Toronto-Binghamton (via the D&H) train 558 was a pretty reliable sight in Streetsville around 19:30. One of the main ways to identify it was the TOFC traffic on the head end, another was a large locomotive consist. On June 11, 2001 CP 5626, 5776, 5576, 5762 and 5566 split the intermediate signals at the west end of Streetsville GO Station.

These three grimy rent-a-wreck's are on the point of a Carlton Trail Railway "eastbound" eventually bound for Meadow Lake SK. Speers was where the right of way changed owners, The train in this shot is still on CN's Blaine Lake Sub but in less than a train length will be on Carlton Trail's Blaine Lake Sub. Sadly all of this track has since been torn up, this was the second last train I ever shot on this line.

A new sand transfer station in Wembley Alberta has leased GMTX 2201. I can't help but notice that there are four exhaust stack's bracketing the fan above the dynamic brake blister. I don't suppose anyone can shed some light on the heritage of this feature ?

CP 8878 east is rolling through KC Junction at the West end of Golden BC. In a hundred or so feet it will enter the Windermere Sub bound for Crowsnest Pass. The tail end of a westbound potash train can also be seen on the north track of the Mountain Sub.

JLCX 2100 is one of the strangest looking GP10 locomotives I've ever seen. It is on lease to the Gardiner Dam Terminal, a large grain elevator just south of Strongfield Saskatchewan.

For a couple of weeks in the summer of 2003 CP operating plans seemed to have the Guelph Jct Turn lifting the empties from ADM mill in Streetsville and the Stonetrain (Streetsville Turn) following closely behind to spot the load's. This presented an otherwise tough to come by opportunity to shoot light power on the ADM spur. I always found this little spur to be photogenic.

NBEC 1857 and 1866 lead a short local eastward out of Cambellton. Part source unit 1809 can be see in the background, as can the Via station. The NEBC railway is one I really wish I could have shot more of.

UP 5318 and 5486 bring a CP westbound to a stop at Moyie BC. They will make a sizeable lift from the siding (behind me) then will lift the UP 5502 (seen to the right) which was set off by a previous eastbound (UP 5373 East).
