CNR 6167 leads a runby near mile 127 of the Beachburg subdivision, about four miles west of Achray (mile 123), as the UCRS special from Ottawa to North Bay cuts across the wilds of northern Ontario.

<br><br>The weekend of September 13 - 15, 1963 marked a massive undertaking by the Upper Canada Railway Society, a 692.2 mile excursion from Toronto - Ottawa - North Bay - Temagami - Toronto, with seventeen coaches behind CNR 6167. With the train having run overnight from Toronto - Ottawa on the 13th, the train turned west and departed the nation's capital early on the 14th. 6167 would be removed at North Bay, with ONR FP7s 1521 and 1511 handling the train to Temagami overnight. The consist returned to North Bay on the morning of the 16th, with 6167 taking over once again for the return to Toronto.

CPR's employee shuttle RDCs are seen westbound over the west leg of the River approaching the Wicksteed Avenue grade crossing and Leaside station. The shuttle ran between Agincourt Yard, Leaside, North Toronto, and Lambton Yard.

The weekend of October 23 & 24, 1965 saw the Upper Canada Railway Society run an excursion on each of the class one railways. The Sunday trip running on the Canadian National behind CNR CPA-16-5 6704 and FPA-4 6774 departed Toronto Union station for Georgetown via the Weston and Halton Subs, before heading up to Allandale along the Beeton Sub returning to Union Station via the Newmarket. Here, the train passes the pond at Tottenham.

GO Transit GP40TC 606 brings up the rear of train 905, the 0700 departure from Pickering to Oakville, passing the old Exhibition station, located between Dufferin Street and Jameson Avenue. This station, only consisting of two platforms, was opened in 1912 to serve the annual Canadian National Exhibition at the nearby Exhibition grounds, replacing <a href=https://www.trha.ca/trha/history/stations/exhibition-station/>an earlier station</a> nearby. It continued to see use until 1968, when the new Exhibition GO station was opened east of Dufferin Street, on the site of the original Exhibition station. These platforms would see one more bit of service foir the 1979 CNE due to crowding at Exhibition GO, with this location being temporarily named "Dufferin Gates." Since then, the old platforms have remained abandoned and overgrown, with stairs to Dufferin Street fenced off.<br><br><i>Scan and editing by Jacob Patterson.</i>

Looking south along the CN Newmarket Sub at Davenport diamond, a westbound train behind three big MLWs cuts through the scene. This scene has changed dramatically in recent years with the elimination of the diamond <a href=https://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=51598>in favour of an overpass (Eric Fallas shot here)</a> for the Metrolinx-owned portion of the Newmarket, carrying GO Transit and VIA Rail trains over CPKC's North Toronto Sub.

Shot during the 1978 TTC strike, VIA train 632 from Union to Stouffville slows for a stop at Markham's 1871-built station. Originally a Toronto & Nipissing Railway structure, it has served passenger operations for the Midland Railway, GTR, CNR, VIA Rail, and presently GO Transit.

<b>Last CN Passenger service at Palmerston.</b> Operating as extra 6101, former train number 672 - the southbound RDC-1 passenger car from Owen Sound - is seen positioned on the Newton Sub side of the station on Saturday, October 24, 1970 for the final time. Arriving at 0655h, the Railiner will await the arrival of Extra 6354, formerly train 668 (RDC-2) from Southampton. Both will be combined and having met extra 6118 (RDC-1), the former train 662 from Kincardine, will depart at 0715h for the trip to Toronto (formerly train 658) via the Fergus, Guelph, Halton, and Weston Subs. Extra 6118, which had arrived at 0700h from Kincardine, will too depart at 0715h for Stratford.

<br><br>I believe the official last runs of the RDC service to Owen Sound, Kincardine, Southampton, and Goderich was the evening of Fri Oct 23, 1970. Although the Sat runs to Toronto (and Stratford) carried passengers, they were no longer operating as scheduled trains, hence the extra flags. Daylight Saving time ended early Sunday morning, Oct 25, 1979, and CN and CP would bring out their winter timetables at this time change.

Extra CN 603 West is about to duck under the Liverpool Road overpass and take the switch onto the York Sub with a pair of new GO Transit GP40TCs on the point. The eight GMD units were broken in hauling CN freight trains over the course of a few months. The units would have their paintjobs modified to <a href=https://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=15912>official GO Transit colours>/a> by April 1967 for final equipment testing before the start of service on Tuesday, May 23, 1967.

Toronto - Ottawa daily train 34 pauses at Havelock at 1050h. It will meet its westbound counterpart, 33, 47 miles east of here at Kaladar at 1143h. This scene was captured during a trip to Smith Falls to ride train 21, a former CNR/CPR pool train, before cancellation as the pool agreement had been cancelled a few months previous.

<br><br>With both the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways seeing sharp declines in ridership during the Great Depression, both companies entered into an agreement to pool some competitive passenger services on Toronto - Montreal and Toronto - Ottawa routes where both operators had similar schedules. The agreement would come into effect April 2, 1933. Montreal - Quebec City operations were added the following year. This agreement would come to an end at midnight on October 30, 1965. CPR overnight pool trains 33 & 34 became CPR daytime RDC runs Toronto - Peterborough - Havelock - Smiths Falls - Bedell Jct. - Ottawa. The CPR overnight pool trains 21 & 22 became luxury late afternoon trains Toronto - Belleville - Smiths Falls - Montreal using equipment from CPR's Canadian, including dining car and dome-observation lounge Park cars in a vain attempt to compete with CN’s afternoon Rapido’s to/from Montreal. By January 1966, it had become obvious that CP couldn’t effectively compete with the Rapido’s, so CP applied and was granted permission to terminate trains 21 & 22. Wanting to ride #21 before it was discontinued, on this Saturday I made a trip on RDC equipped Ottawa train 33 to Smiths Falls and returned to Toronto on train 21, now named the Royal York. The eastbound counterpart, train #22, carried the name Le Chateau Champlain. Both trains being named after CP hotels at each of their destinations.
