After shooting daily except Sunday all stops Toronto - Belleville <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=52004>pool train number 10 at Harwood Avenue in Ajax,</a> I was able to zip down the 401 to head off the train again during its stop at Bowmanville's former Grand Trunk station. Built circa 1856, the building was damaged in a derailment in January 1968 but repaired for use into 1979. It would be demolished in April 1981.<br><br><i>Scan and editing by Jacob Patterson.</i>

A hasty phone call invitation from Jim Brown to join him at CN Spadina shop to photograph 6167 being prepared for the UCRS Excursion to South Parry is what resulted in this picture being taken. Bob Bowman, foreman of engines, had advised Jim a few hours earlier that 6167 would be in steam, and would be “limbering up” by running back and forth on the shop track. After taking on coal and sand, 6167 was run out to the west end of the shop lead track and back. Jim and I took turns <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=51217>photographing each other,</a> then under the watchful eye of Bob, we each took a turn at operating 6167 out to the shop track switch and back! It was a wonderful morning, wonderful memories. Sadly, Jim is gone, Spadina Shop is now condo towers, but thanks to the City of Guelph and railway volunteers, 6167 is still with us sixty years later.<br><br><i>Scan and editing by Jacob Patterson.</i>

The weekend of October 23 & 24, 1965 saw the Upper Canada Railway Society run an excursion on each of the class one railways. The Saturday trip running on the Canadian Pacific behind CPR E8A 1802 departed Toronto Union station for Hamilton's TH&B Hunter Street station via the Oakville Sub, before heading up to Guelph Junction, Streetsville, and north to Orangeville before returning to Union Station. Here, the train makes a runpast at Cataract, just south of the junction with the Elora Sub, seen climbing the grade at left.<br><br>The Sunday excursion on the Canadian National ran from Toronto - Georgetown - Beeton - Barrie - Newmarket - Toronto and was captured <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35091>at Beeton by Doug Page.</a><br><br><i>John Freyseng Photo, Jacob Patterson Collection Slide.</i>

Daily except Sunday all stops Toronto - Belleville pool train number 10 flies along the Oshawa Sub behind a pair of GMD-1s passing beneath Harwood Avenue in Ajax. CN extra 3875 west sits in the hole at the west end of Canfield siding waiting on an eastbound Norfolk & Western freight to clear. The friendly tail end crew member on the rear of caboose 562648 gives a wave to both crew and railfans trackside.<br><br><i>Scan and editing by Jacob Patterson.</i>

The first section of westbound CPR Montreal to Agincourt freight 915 rolls up to the Smith Falls station behind an assortment of GMD and MLW power. This scene was captured during a trip to Smith Falls to ride train 21, a former CNR/CPR pool train, before cancellation as the pool agreement had been cancelled a few months previous.<br><br>With both the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways seeing sharp declines in ridership during the Great Depression, both companies entered into an agreement to pool some competitive passenger services on Toronto - Montreal and Toronto - Ottawa routes where both operators had similar schedules. The agreement would come into effect April 2, 1933. Montreal - Quebec City operations were added the following year. This agreement would come to an end at midnight on October 30, 1965. CPR overnight pool trains 33 & 34 became CPR daytime RDC runs Toronto - Peterborough - Havelock - Smiths Falls - Bedell Jct. - Ottawa. The CPR overnight pool trains 21 & 22 became luxury late afternoon trains Toronto - Belleville - Smiths Falls - Montreal using equipment from CPR's Canadian, including dining car and dome-observation lounge Park cars in a vain attempt to compete with CN’s afternoon Rapido’s to/from Montreal. By January 1966, it had become obvious that CP couldn’t effectively compete with the Rapido’s, so CP applied and was granted permission to terminate trains 21 & 22. Wanting to ride #21 before it was discontinued, on this Saturday I made a trip on RDC equipped Ottawa train 33 to Smiths Falls and returned to Toronto on train 21, now named the Royal York. The eastbound counterpart, train #22, carried the name Le Chateau Champlain. Both trains being named after CP hotels at each of their destinations.<br><br><i>Scan and editing by Jacob Patterson.</i>

Shortly after an eastbound <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=51114>led by a pair of RS10s</a> departed Belleville, another eastbound behind RS10 8469, FB-1 4409, and leased Bessemer & Lake Erie F7A 718 throttles up crossing Highway 2. The weekend of October 13-14, 1962 provided railfans in the Montreal area with two excursions out of Central Station behind two steam locomotives. The Saturday trip would be led by J-4-d Pacific 5107, and the Sunday trip double headed with 5107 and U-2-c 6153. These trips run by the Canadian Railroad Historical Association were supported by the Upper Canada Railway Society.<br><br>CNR 5107 is seen in front of the St-Hyacinthe station during the last water stop of the evening, giving photographers the opportunity for night shots. The six car train had departed Central station track 9 that morning at 0829h making a water stop here at St. Hyacinthe, <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=50889>as well as at Richmond,</a> and three photo runpasts. One more runpast would be held between Richmond and Sherbrooke before turning the train for the return to Montreal, stopping for three more runpasts and water on the way. Back in Montreal, 5107 would be cut off at Bridge Street, leaving the consist in the care of MLW S4 8062 for the last couple of miles into Central Station. Today, CNR 5107 is on display in Kapuskasing. Toronto - London express passenger 37 throttles up passing CN's Weston station at roughly 1715h. This was the third station at Weston, built in 1905 just south of John Street, it would serve passengers until its demise in 1966. Within the year, this portion of the Brampton Subdivision will become the Weston Subdivision with the opening of the Toronto bypass and CN's Toronto Yard, now MacMillan Yard.<br><br><i>Scan and editing by Jacob Patterson.</i>

With a plume of smoke billowing above, CNR 6167 approaches the Humber River on its way west out of Toronto during an Upper Canada Railway Society excursion to St. Thomas.<br><br>Originating at Toronto Union Station, the excursion ran to Hamilton where a pair of MLW RS3s; 3004, 3019, were added ahead of 6167 to assist the train up the Hagersville Subdivision to Caledonia, even though the 800 ton consist came in well under the 1,400 ton haulage capacity for Northerns up the grade. The diesels would be removed at Caledonia, the tender replenished with water, and the excursion would depart for Jarvis with a couple of runpasts along the way at Caledonia and Garnet, captured <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47268>here by Bob Sandusky.</a> Further runpasts would be held along the Cayuga west of Jarvis before arriving at St. Thomas <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=44906> where Doug Page captured the train </a> before it turned for home.<br><br><a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=51044>Westbound over the bridge at New Sarum,</a> Photographer Unknown.
