About Dave Brook

I started chasing trains after listening to my grandfathers stories of riding steam through the Rockies, and seeing the ore train in Bracebridge. From that I worked for CN/VIA/GO Transit for 6 years before becoming an air traffic controller. I discovered I liked trains more from the outside than in.

Yet another CP westbound out of Toronto with BNSF power. Even 3 years ago, this was unthinkable on a westbound. It's becoming common; especially with BNSF's. KCS power trailing is routine now.

You've really just to enjoy them while you have them. 7037 and 7030 have been paired on London-Welland 238-239 for a couple of weeks. CP power control can be kind after all.

Foamers delight. I suspect that most who participate in this hobby have all had dreams of taking a chainsaw to the edge of the right of way to open up some new angles. The city of Cambridge has acceded in this dream; perhaps to finally enlarge the Beverly St bridge, but who knows. Yes, there's still some tidying to do; maybe a shrubbery or two :) but today, BNSF's 3973, 6806 and 3986 have CP 137 well in hand heading for Wolverton and eventually Chicago seen from this new angle.

CP's power control, with whom I am usually highly frustrated, has granted Southern Ontario a gift. For the last couple of weeks, 2 of CP's 59 SD70ACU's have been assigned to trains 238-239 which once travelled London- Buffalo, but now flip in Welland. This shortcut has had 239 coming west in daylight as opposed to after dark; the nightmares of getting in and out of the US removed.

So taking advantage of the chance to catch one of the 2 CP Strathcona units in motion, aided by 7037, 7030 attacks Orr's Lake Hill with a short fast train.

We've been very lucky to have these 2 (7030 is the other) on 238-239 for a couple of weeks. Considering there are only 59 of them, we're more than lucky. Thus, the challenge becomes finding a different view.

A tender-turned-steam generator for the Agawa Canyon train. 4 rebuilt GP9's were the power.I'm hoping to find those shots.

And the littlest will save them all. When lead unit 8126 failed on the hill, H72 came to the rescue. 3 non-turbocharged 645's sounded wonderful flying through the west end of Orrs Lake.

Catching the last light of day. Despite the heads-up from Chris Derro, this one was rather difficult to catch...CP sent 2 stack trains down the Bala Sub back to back causing an amusing 100km of wasted chase, and almost missing it all together.

These units will always be my favourite. That can mixed so perfectly with that carbody. The flared radiators from the natural gas experiment just add a little pizzazz.

This is why I love nose-out DPU's.

Ontario is having a pretty much faux-winter, but -18 felt pretty cold at 7am. 8941 pulled through town, and stopped at Boyne. It can't be that long, I thought.....signals lined for a northbound so......2 and half hours later the second monster 1+1+1 takes the crossovers to clear the main....for a crew that I suspect will struggle to avoid an early crew change. I'll never understand the logic in running over siding length in both directions.

My only regret is not offering the crew a coffee run.

"The great locomotive race"...2024 version. Perhaps not quite.The heavily followed rail train rests in Puslinch Siding; they'll be off to work shortly as CP 134; with a UP leader...second day in a row for that comes flying down the main. Cp is very unpredictable these days...perhaps that's a good thing.
