![On Vancouver Island, Crown Zellerbach at Ladysmith often borrowed a locomotive from CP (E&N) when their lone road unit was down. On Wednesday 1977-10-26, the unit on loan was S-4 7116 from Wellcox yard in Nanaimo, and is seen here idling in the distance as the CZ Humdirgen log car unloader (on Shay running gear) is encouraging loads into the saltchuck for boom boats to organize into rafts for towing to mainland mills. A goal of photographing that action was catching the THUNK-SPLOOSH as each bundle hit the water.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/1977-10-26_cz-humdirgen-active-and-cp7116-distant-at-log-dump-at-ladysmith-2_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1280x893-pixels-200x150.jpg)

That is the pit track on the lower right, with No. 1 The Canadian powered by 4068 and 1404 passing by at 0952 PDT on Friday 1978-10-06. ![Once upon a time, CP established a terminal at mile 47.9 at Ruby Creek to serve crews and equipment from the Coquihalla sub. junction a few miles to the east, and it became the east end of double track when that was installed. With the passage of time, the Coquihalla connection was shut down, and later the end of double track was relocated west to mileage 51.7 at new Ruby Creek. ![On my first visit (by CN Super Continental from Vancouver) to Edmonton, a local railfan took my friend and me to CP’s station at South Edmonton one evening, just after No. 303 had arrived from Calgary. A good thing, as when we went to depart on No. 302 with the same RDC CP 9113 the next morning, the place was blanketed in snow.

Today, that depot still stands, no longer a passenger train terminal, and the CP track no longer extends north another two miles to downtown Edmonton, but just across Whyte Avenue in the distance is now the south terminus of the Edmonton High Level Bridge Streetcar line operated by the Edmonton Radial Railway Society.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/1972-11-29_cp9113-at-depot-at-south-edmonton_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1024x648-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![Precisely fifty-one years ago today, on Saturday June 5th 1971, Canadian Forest Products operated their ALCo 2-8-2 locomotive 113 on passenger excursions on Vancouver Island in the Nimpkish Valley from Woss Camp to Woss Lake and return, in conjunction with a Loggers’ Sports Day. Just west of operating headquarters at Woss Camp, a combination rail-and-road bridge crossed the Nimpkish River, seen here with 113 and two caboose cars westbound two miles to Woss Lake.

This was quite early (only 18 years old) in my railway photography journey, and taken with a borrowed Voightlander rangefinder camera. To this day I remain surprised at how well it came out, my very first good train action photo.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/1971-06-05d_cfp113-westward-passenger-excursion-on-nimpkish-river-bridge-leaving-woss-camp_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1280x848-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![With the regular coal train route to and from Roberts Bank closed (possibly due to work on the bridge at Mission City), this empty eastward train has detoured over BN north from Colebrook and over the Fraser River bridge at New Westminster then up the Westminster sub. on CP to the mainline junction (now Macaulay) half a mile west of this photo taken on Saturday 1972-11-04. MLWs like 4565 and 4562 were regular coal power in the early years of Roberts Bank trains. ![Fifty years and two days ago, E&N train No. 52 from Wellcox in Nanaimo on Saturday 1972-05-20 was a bit later than usual arriving in Victoria, so was in bright morning light for a change, and was a prime target for me just off a graveyard shift as a wiper at the roundhouse. ![Westward trains between Princeton and Merritt were at night for many years during high tonnage operation, but as traffic declined, operations were reorganized and provided daylight opportunities, allowing this Tuesday 1984-06-19 view at the Brookmere water tower of two GP38ACs where quartets of them had been common in days with heavier trains. Above the cab of 3001, note the roof of the relocated depot, previously situated about alongside the first carload of lumber. Since that photo, rails have been removed (1989) in favour of a rail trail, the depot was destroyed by fire, and the two-spouted water tower was relocated northward about 20 metres to GPS 49.81810, -120.87199.

Both locomotives survive today at 52 years since built, 3001 as maintenance of way power unit CP 403011, and 3002 as a regular roadswitcher.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1984-06-19_cp3001+3002-westward-by-water-tower-at-brookmere_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1024x681-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![At Prince Albert, CP’s shop facilities were modest compared with CN’s roundhouse off to the south, a simple four-track engineshed, utilized every night in the old way of storing engines inside, even an old reflector-and-bulb headlight for area illumination.
