Worked 41.5 years in CP mechanical department at Victoria and Port Coquitlam, now retired. First job was on Victoria Miniature Railway (10 1/4” gauge”) at Mattick’s Farm in Cordova Bay, with steam and battery power.

West of Revelstoke by 21.6 miles and a bit over a mile east of the east switch of Taft, CP and the Eagle River and the TransCanada Highway were squeezed through a small gap, and by climbing a gravel bank, a view excluding the highway was possible. On Sunday 1974-10-13 at 1211 PDT, that worked well for a westward loaded Coleman coal train (note cross-hoppers with bottom-dump doors rather than bathtub rotary-dump gondolas) with all-SD40-2 power CP 5821 + 5660 + 5618.

Fifty-seven miles west of Calgary, the Trans Canada Highway runs on the south side of Lac des Arcs, and as a kid riding in the back seat on family vacation, I recall looking north across that lake to a fascinating reflected view of a mill exhausting great clouds of steam.

<p>Twenty-five years later, that was discovered to be the home of Canada Cement, with a GP7 (GMD A-273 of January 1952, ex Algoma Central 166) for switching their plant at Exshaw, seen here with number 12 active on Tuesday 1989-05-30.

Ten and a bit years after CN’s Alberta Resources Railway was completed in May of 1969 between Swan Landing and Grande Prairie, this was the northward view at downtown Hoff at milepost 57 from Swan Landing, with a new style Station Name Sign apparently having just recently replaced the original.

In following the Fraser River westward from Glen Valley, CN’s Yale subdivision squeezes by a bluff before reaching Fort Langley, and right at the beginning of that constriction it crosses West Creek at mileage 100.8. On Sunday 1991-03-17, a westward mixed freight with CN 5323 + 5058 utilized the North Track at 1313 PST.

<p>The silver-coloured water tower on the far bank of the Fraser River marks Whonnock on CP’s Cascade sub.

A pair of EMD SD38-2s, BC Hydro 384 and 382, brought a regular westward Valley Freight down Scott Hill and paused at the interlocking signal for the Fraser River Bridge to cross into New Westminster on Sunday 1982-05-09 at 1802 PDT, as seen here from the Patullo highway bridge sidewalk (ear plugs very handy for reducing road traffic noise).

<p>This view was lucky timing for me, as twenty days later on 1982-05-26, a major fire involving the swing span of that Fraser River railway bridge completely disrupted local railway operations on BCH, CN, CP, VIA, and Amtrak, providing many photo opportunities when all rail traffic was detoured via a bridge from Mission City to Matsqui.

Believed to be the westernmost industrial railway operation in Canada (there were earlier logging lines on Haida Gwai), Prince Rupert Grain built a terminal on Prince Rupert harbour and alongside CN’s Skeena sub. For switching loads and empties, in 1981 they acquired a 1955-built ex-Southern Pacific ALCo S-6 numbered (on paper, no external mark) 1219, as seen Monday 1981-10-05.

<p>When expanding export terminal business for several commodities developed near Prince Rupert on Ridley Island, Prince Rupert Grain built a new terminal there in 1984, and the original site appears to be a wood pellet terminal now.

The bright yellow Sperry Rail Service rail inspection cars were always a camera treat, and on Tuesday 1982-03-16, SRS 123 was no exception as it slowly and steadily tested westward on the North track of CP’s Cascade sub. at mileage 119.2, past the Allied Chemicals (now Chemtrade Solutions) plant on the south shore of Burrard Inlet between Port Moody and Vancouver.

When I visited Rocanville, Saskatchewan, on Tuesday 1976-10-05, that point was on the through Neudorf subdivision from Virden to Esterhazy, but the depot had been closed for years and had been relocated in 1972 to the Rocanville and District Museum at 220 Qu’Appelle Avenue in Rocanville, as seen in this photo.

As part of subsequent branchline rationalization, Rocanville to Esterhazy was abandoned, and the line from Virden to a wye a bit east of Rocanville (leading eight miles north to a potash mine loadout) was then renamed the Rocanville subdivision. The former depot survives today as a key part of the museum, and is now at GPS 50.38593, -101.70476.

Across the river and along the road noted on the far bank in my photo a couple weeks back at the CN Athabasca River bridge, the Canadian Northern Alberta alignment became Township Road 510A or Old Entrance Road, and the former Entrance depot was still in place when I visited on Monday 1979-09-24, seen here looking westward towards the bridge. This was part of Canadian Northern Alberta’s Lucerne subdivision, retained by CN from the Athabasca bridge eastward to a gravel pit at Bliss, abandoned in 1932.

<p>To my surprise and total delight, that 1914-built depot survives forty-five years later in 2024, relocated a bit farther back from the river and railway grade onto a new foundation, and now part of the Old Entrance Bed ‘n Breakfast Cabins operation.

On Watson Island, just west of Port Edward and across the water from today’s multi-product export terminal on Ridley Island, Columbia Cellulose operated a pulp and kraft paper mill, largely supplied with logs hauled by CN from Terrace. For switching that mill complex, former CN 852 (with three previous numbers), a petit G8 with no external markings (but 1134 on paper), was kept busy, as seen Tuesday 1977-09-27.

West of Edmonton, CN utilizes portions of Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk Pacific lines dating from the nineteen-teens railway construction mania that led to Canadian National being created. West of Entrance, CN crossed the Athabasca River on a new (1926) alignment diverging from the GTP route around today’s mileage 190.8 to join the Canadian Northern route on the north side, with the CNoR route visible in this 1987-05-25 view of VIA No. 4 as the road to the right from the third passenger car.

<p>Behind this train are stations Solomon and next Swan Landing, junction with the Alberta Resources Railway north to Grande Prairie.

Following CP eastward (compass northward) in the Fraser River canyon from crew-change point North Bend, a gravel road wound forth and back and crossed the Nahatlatch River three miles beyond Chaumox, and just a bit beyond that road bridge, climbed well above the railway, providing relatively easy access to the top of a gravel bank which was ideal for train observation. Here is an eastward coal empties with CP 5803 and 5861 and one more SD40-2 on the headend (and unseen mid-train remotes) on Wednesday 1987-06-24 heading for next station Keefers and onward to next crew change at Kamloops.

<p>The CPKC bridge over the Nahatlatch River (half a mile west of the photo) is a bit of a walk to access and rather difficult for photos.

Westward from Kamloops, CP followed the south shore of Kamloops Lake then the south side of the Thompson River onward from Savona, climbing to a summit at Walhachin and with CN on the other side of the lake and river. Here, with CN’s Deadman River bridge behind the photographer and that waterway emerging into the Thompson River west of Savona, a CP westward train of grain boxes is ascending behind CP 5832 and 5841 at mileage 28.8 on Monday 1979-07-16 at 1555 PDT, with three miles to go to reach Walhachin.

Yates, Alberta, is the first station east of a crew change point at Edson on CN’s Edson sub., and is immediately west of a steel bridge over the McLeod River. On Sunday 1987-05-24, VIA train No. 4 was powered by VIA 6313 + 6607 as it departed the east switch (note signals in the distance) and headed for the bridge and onward to Edmonton.

<p>This post on Monday 2024-08-12 is recognition of the 28th anniversary of Monday 1996-08-12 when westward CN train symbol 117 encountered a rolling runaway cut of twenty cars from the yard at Edson, with three fatalities, at the precise location of my photo a bit over nine years earlier.

<p>Having been involved as a locomotive event recorder technician in numerous accident investigations, the ones hardest to deal with were where fatalities occurred in locations known well from photos taken there and with the crew totally blameless. In the 1996 collision at Yates, conductor Kenneth Robert Trout and engineer Jacob Charles Elder plus visitor John Eric Fraser were lost.

On the west side of Grande Prairie, 108th Street carrying Highway 40 crossed Northern Alberta Railways at mileage 50.91 of the Grande Prairie subdivision heading west to Dawson Creek. From the debris seen there on Monday 1978-09-25 with GP9 202 rather uncomfortably parked and the scattered remains of a loaded woodchip truck which had experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly, it appeared that the Dawson Creek wayfreight train No. 51 on the preceding Friday did not reach its destination. That crossing was notorious for such collisions.

Northern Alberta Railways typically utilized three of their four SD38-2 units to handle the Great Slave Lake traffic down to and then up from a bridge across the Peace River at the town of the same name. Here, on Friday 1976-09-24, that day’s GSL Turn is just starting to roll homeward again behind 402 + 404 + 401 after pausing for a mandatory standing train inspection after a hard grind upgrade from Peace River to level land at Judah, and now about to cross Township Road 825, with forty-one miles to Winagami Junction then one more to home terminal McLennan. From there, two more subdivisions spread over 262 miles for the cars to reach Edmonton.

Just north of the USA border and interchange with BNSF at Sweetgrass, Montana, and with the tailend still in Montana, a northward train to Lethbridge has CP 5810 + 5801 + 5759 + 5813 (a planned-for-Locotrol consist if ever I saw one) for power as it gets underway at Coutts, Alberta, on Friday 1989-05-26 at 1401 MDT.

<p>Lethbridge was originally in downtown, but was relocated 8 miles west (and beyond the viaduct across the Oldman River) to new Lethbridge formerly Coalhurst and Kipp.

In the canyon of the Fraser River between Keefers and Chaumox, just a bit north of a bridge over the Nahatlatch River, a high and long gravel bank above a curve at mileage 113.5 provided a glorious elevated view of CP’s Thompson sub., and on Wednesday 1987-06-24 that perch was used to record a westward grain train with lead unit CP 5748 carrying Expo 86 markings and assisted by 5594 + 5772 + 5676.

West from Kamloops, CN stays fairly close to water level, first along the north side of Kamloops Lake then along the Thompson River. Shortly before reaching Walhachin, an old river oxbow is crossed, and early morning near-summer lighting is ideal for catching reflections, illustrated here at 0708 PDT on Tuesday 1982-06-01 with a grain train westward behind CN 5139 + 5125 + 5280 at mileage 29.9.

<p>The cut face of the distant bank is for CP’s Thompson sub. ascending to a summit at Walhachin.

Viewed from the Central Avenue overpass in Prince Albert on Thursday 1981-09-24, with the headend on CN’s Duck Lake sub. and tailend still on CN’s Tisdale sub., this is CP’s freight westward to Meadow Lake. This area was a spider’s web of CP running rights on numerous CN lines, and RS-23 lightweights CP 8018 + 8016 + 8015 have yet to navigate parts of the Blaine Lake and Big River subs. before reaching CP rails at Tobey near Debden.

<p>Other than the CP yard in Prince Albert (parallel to and a couple blocks north of CN’s), the nearest CP tracks were Northway at 18.9 miles to the east, Sharpe at 18.2 miles to the north, and Tobey at 60.2 miles to the west.

<p>Today, while the Prince Albert depot remains, much of the branchline network is history, and Carlton Trail Railway operates what remains.
