![For filming of a portion of the movie The Grey Fox, ex MacMillan Bloedel number 1077 now British Columbia Provincial Museum 1077 was used to simulate a CP steam locomotive hauled train at “Kamloops” using the original E&N now CP depot at Parksville on Vancouver Island on Friday 1980-11-14. The regular southward passenger train No. 198 with RDC-1 CP 9064 arrived at 1410, precisely on time (of course, that’s just how we operated). Note the chalked arrivals and departures board for “Kamloops”.

![Westward from Kamloops Lake, while CP chose to ascend to high ground at Walhachin, CN remained close to the Thompson River, requiring several bridges to avoid difficult terrain, providing a wonderful array of photo opportunities. Here, just east of Walhachin, an oxbow of the river was crossed twice by fills, this being the west one, occupied on Tuesday 1982-06-01 at 0708 PDT by westward grain loads powered by CN 5139 + 5125 + 5280.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/1982-06-01-0708pdt_cn5139+5125+5280-westward-at-29d9-near-walhachin_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1280x859-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![Alongside the Thompson River west from Savona, CP’s mainline climbs to Walhachin, and at the summit on the compass-south side is an outcrop of rock ideal for crushing into ballast, hence the two extra tracks beside the siding. From the top of that rock, the view eastward on Sunday 1980-06-08 at 1635 PDT included a CP westbound, symbol train 67, with 5664 + 5785 + 57xx + 8501 for power, and in the distance down close to the river, CN’s Ashcroft sub. mainline.

The area from Savona to Walhachin and Semlin to near Ashcroft is not blessed with many easy access points, but is well worth long walks, one of my “happy” places on this planet.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/1980-06-08-1635pdt_cp5664+5785+57xx+8501-westward-s67-at-walhachin_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1280x866-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![West of Kamloops, CP follows the south shore of Kamloops Lake to Savona, then starts a significant upgrade along the Thompson River to Walhachin. In earlier years, this was a helper grade with daunting steeper sections instead of today’s steady climb. On Sunday 1980-06-08 at 1107 PDT, a westbound with SD40-2s 5790 + 5661 + 5666 (one with wide stripes and two with narrow ones, and all with full-height multimarks) is working hard at mileage 28.5 with three more miles to Walhachin.

In the distance near the tail end, evidence of the lower older grade can be seen, and on the other side of the river is the CN Ashcroft sub.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/1980-06-08-1107pdt_cp5790+5661+5666-westward-at-28d5-near-walhachin_ken-perry_2400-dpi-1280x995-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![On a CP mechanical On-Line Failures team trip to Toronto in 1994, an amazingly hot evening walk from the hotel up Markham Road took me to the Finch Avenue overpass directly above the Toronto Yard station name sign, and not-yet-rebuilt SW1200RS 8159 passed below westward at an opportune time at 1904 EDT.

![During the bitterly cold winter of 1993-1994, mechanical personnel were deployed to known difficult areas to improve the chances of trains getting over the road without delay, with particular emphasis on “hot” intermodal traffic. Thus, I was on eastward symbol train 482/03 with SD40-2s CP 5943 and SOO 6622 on Friday 1994-03-04 when we had a meet at Falcon, SK, 108 miles east from Moose Jaw, which presented an opportunity to railfan on pay. At just under a mile north of the TransCanada Highway, the sound of the idling units competed with the wind singing in the low pole-line wires.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/1994-03-04-1400cst_cp5943+soo6622-eastward-s482-03-at-falcon-sk-1_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1280x866-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![Winter 1993-1994 was a tough one for CP on the prairies, with deep cold causing delays due to malfunctioning locomotives, and to address that, mechanical department “riders” were sent to accompany trains to ensure they kept moving. One rider sent to Moose Jaw was me, three weeks in February and March of 1994, and for a west coast kid, it was colder than ever experienced before or since! But the open landscape and mostly clear skies and especially the outstandingly welcoming people made it memorable.

On Thursday 1994-03-03, symbol train 953 from Moose Jaw west to Swift Current (essentially a wayfreight) had a known malperformer, SD40-2 5625, soon discovered to have a mis-set governor causing the engine to be overloaded at full throttle and die. At Mortlach, 25 miles from Moose Jaw, we took the siding to meet 5672 and 5779 east at 1016 CST. Conductor on the ground, engineer still on the engine, PK OK, highball.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/1994-03-03-1016cst_cp5625-westward-s953-01-and-cp5672+5579-eastward-at-mortlach-sk_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1280x1926-pixels-200x150.jpg)

By no means do I intend to condone trespassing to obtain a photo. ![In 1979, the BC government ran a west coast Canada and USA tourist promotion train, with ex CP 2860 Royal Hudson as the attention-raising star. Here, on its second day, Thursday 1979-03-29, the Good Times ‘79 Express is eastbound on CP at Squilax at 1150 PST, ascending to Notch Hill, with another MLW, BCOL M-420 644, assisting under MU control. Blind luck on my part that the exhaust rose just enough for sunshine on 644! That is Little Shuswap Lake below on the upper right, and on the lower right, a typical Shuswap sub. telegraph pole with a pattern of two long, one short, and one long cross arms.

This photo is dedicated to the memory of artist Peter Sawatzky (1922-2012), who came up shortly before train time, waved at me higher up the bank, then blended himself into an inconspicuous spot in the brush. ![On Vancouver Island, CP’s line from Parksville to Port Alberni was ruled from 1949 to 1971 by Baldwin diesels, but increasing tonnages from the mills in Port Alberni plus the risk of fire from the common steel brake shoes on prolonged grades resulted in trial of pairs of GP9s with dynamic braking. At the same time, due to advanced age of two large timber trestles, diversions on culverted fills were constructed. This is an eastward train powered by 8684 and 8649 on the Four Mile Creek bridge at mileage 24.4, just east of the siding at Stokes. In another half mile, bridge 23.9 over Five Mile Creek will be encountered.
