Worked 41.5 years in CP mechanical department at Victoria and Port Coquitlam, now retired. First job was on Victoria Miniature Railway (10 1/4” gauge”) at Mattick’s Farm in Cordova Bay, with steam and battery power.

At Prince Albert, CP’s shop facilities were modest compared with CN’s roundhouse off to the south, a simple four-track engineshed, utilized every night in the old way of storing engines inside, even an old reflector-and-bulb headlight for area illumination. Here, two lightweight RS-23s await their next assignment. This is all completely history now, very difficult to know a railway yard was even there.

At Prince Albert in 1976, clear evidence of steam days remained as the foundation for the water tower stood firmly in the CP yard, with a trio of RS-23s, 8015+8017+8018, passing by on Wednesday 1976-09-29, preparing to take a train to Meadow Lake.

From Prince Albert, CP ran a daily-except-Sunday wayfreight back to home terminal Lanigan, on CN for the first 19 miles to Northway on the south side of the South Saskatchewan River, then south 67.6 miles to a short stretch of 0.3 mile on CN at Humboldt, and finally on CP again 26.5 miles to Lanigan. Here is train No. 86 with its typical single GP9, 8688 in this case at 1240 CST on Wednesday 1976-09-29 and with its front sandbox lid still open, just off the CN at Northway. Rails of both lines are history there now.

Canadian Pacific used to reach Prince Albert via the Prince Albert sub. northward from Lanigan, with a short stretch on CN at Humboldt, then a longer run on CN from Northway to a switchback into CP’s own yard in Prince Albert. Daily wayfreight service was provided from Lanigan, with timetable schedules on the CN. Here is the southbound half, No. 86, at the CP depot (out of sight to the left) with its typical single GP9, 8531, on Monday 1976-09-27, with the caboose snug up to end of track at 1 Ave. E halfway between 13 St. E and 14 St. E. The building in the background stands to this day as the Cumberland Crossing Inn, but everything else in the photo is history.

On the CP E&N turntable at Victoria on Saturday 1976-05-01, Sperry car SRS 129 (which dates from 1925 as Lehigh Valley 29) is rotated in a time warp of similar-age CP facilities and equipment, most notably the 1920s Industrial Works 100-ton auxiliary crane 414326.

<p>In the distance above the centre of the car is the simple 1972 concrete block depot at mileage 0.8 which replaced the downtown depot at mileage 0.0 at Store Street.

Westward from Medicine Hat, CP climbs out of the South Saskatchewan River valley to Redcliff and crosses under highway 1 at mile 3.8, my photo perch on Monday 1974-09-30 for train No. 965 with “four nickels” SD40 5555 and C-424 4248 and C-636 4728, with the petrochemical facility at Cousins in the distance. Today, no poles and no fence.

Westward from Cranbrook, CP had a wayfreight to Creston, typically with a single GP9 for power. Here it is on Saturday 1974-09-28 on its homeward journey with 8494 and a sizeable train at the station name sign for McConnel, 12 miles east of Creston and 55 miles to go, with Mount Thompson standing firmly on guard on the left.

Prior to the 1995-11-01 inauguration of Westcoast Express commuter passenger trains between Mission City and Vancouver, CP ran several demonstrations of possible routes using RDC-2 91 ex 9108, seen here hustling eastward at Haney in Maple Ridge, with the Fraser River in the background. This location is now a Westcoast Express station, on the far right side of the photo.

In 1972, CP’s E&N subsidiary constructed a new depot at mileage 0.8 in Victoria to replace the mileage 0.0 one on Store Street to allow for street reconfiguration, meaning daily-except-Sunday passenger trains would no longer reach the downtown area.

<p>Here, on Friday 1972-10-13, the next-to-last No. 2 to arrive the old depot is seen from the machinery deck (with bridgetender permission) of the mileage 0.1 Johnson Street bridge. The switch immediately behind the train is to the CN interchange, and the small bridge beyond that is today’s end-of-track on the Victoria subdivision.

When a broken rail just south of South Wellington derailed Wellcox-to-Victoria train No. 52 on Wednesday 1974-02-20, lead GP9 8531 got across with only its rear truck off, but GP9 8613 in second position was well and truly all off, and idling Baldwin 8005 rolled onto its left side, a major mess which ended its working life. Auxiliary crane 414326 from Victoria was kept busy, seen here on the initial hoist of 8613, with 8005’s trucks visible just beyond. This is just a couple miles south of the 1973-06-12 head-on collision which ended the careers of Baldwins 8006, 8007, 8008 and 8011.

In 1974, in anticipation of the increasing water level of Kinbasket Lake behind the Mica Dam on the Columbia River, CP constructed a water-level grade between miles 61 and 66 to replace the westward dip down to Beavermouth and the subsequent climb back out of the Columbia valley. Here, on the original mainline at 1710 on Tuesday 1974-04-23, SD40-2s 5634 + 5596 + 5822 are eastbound at the west switch old Beavermouth as seen from the new grade.

Probably the last time an A unit led the Canadian (and a decently long one at that) out of Vancouver was on Thursday 1993-06-24 when VIA 6300 led 6452 and fifteen cars, seen here from the Terminal Avenue overpass at Vancouver Jct.

Before the development of the Sparwood-area coal mines in southeastern BC, much export coal came from Coleman Collieries in Alberta, which utilized a Canadian Locomotive Company 44-ton diesel-torque-converter unit ex-CP 13 as their DL-10 for switching empty cross-hoppers to the loadout tipple and assembling trains for westward movement to Port Moody. Unit trains of rotary-dumped bathtub cars are so much more efficient.

Rocky Mountaineer’s predecessor was the Great Canadian Railtours Company, and they started with a pair of eventually-repainted ex-ATSF GE B37-7 units for power, seen here westbound at 1550 on Wednesday 1992-08-19 with 12 cars in Pitt Meadows and about to cross Kennedy Road then approach the CP Pitt River bridge.<p>The open farmland on the left side of the photo is now CP’s Vancouver Intermodal Facility, the pole line is long since history, and a CTC crossover is now at the location of the second unit.

Northern Alberta Railways provided the CN Great Slave Lake line south from Hay River and Pine Point, NWT, with the rail connection to the rest of the North American network, interchanging at Roma Jct. on the north side of the Peace River and near Grimshaw. A daily out-and-back train from the nearest NAR terminal at McLennan, the GSL Turn, made the connection, descending eastward to cross the Peace River and climbing southward to Judah, tough territory, and ideally suited to trios of SD38-2s. Here, caboose 13002 and 404 + 403 + 402 are on a lunch break in CN’s Roma Jct. yard on Sunday 1980-09-28, only three months before CN absorbed NAR.

West of Grande Prairie, NAR ran a thrice-weekly wayfreight to Dawson Creek, BC, west Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and returning the next day, almost always with a single GP9. Here, No. 51 engine 206 on Wednesday 1977-09-21 has three Hart cars of ballast and four empties plus caboose 13006 and is passing the Foster’s elevator at Albright, with 54.8 miles yet to go to Dawson Creek.

<p>Note the green reflectorized target on the switchstand, not centred on the shaft as is common, but offset to the side of the diverging track, an NAR standard that simply makes so much sense.

Last week, a shot of No. 2 at Canmore was shared. Taken just 105 minutes later and 43.2 miles eastward, here is No. 1 on the same day with 1432 and 1411 handling seven cars having just passed under highway 22 Cowboy Trail at Cochrane, just 24 miles after leaving Calgary.

Once a simple and reliable daily sight, but now history for many years, No. 2 The Canadian is seen here on Monday 1974-10-14 at 1410 MDT departing Canmore with a typical all-stainless consist led by 1402 and 1404.

One year and four days after this everyday view from the sand shed roof in Victoria on Thursday 1972-06-08, lead unit 8007 on this train was severely damaged (along with three other Baldwins) in a head-on collision a bit south of Nanaimo. Second unit 8002, which for its slightly sharp distinct M-3 horn was a favourite of mine, survived to the March 1975 end of Baldwin roadswitcher operation on the E&N.

<p>In the foreground, the de-bunked open-deck log cars are in for scrapping, with the removed bunks being utilized to ready steel-decked flatcars for Lake Cowichan log service. On the far left, the tender is for the auxiliary crane then still very active at Victoria. It was practically a working museum there.

<p>In the background, above the engine hood of the lead unit, the Island Tug & Barge rail-car slip for direct interchange connections to USA ports can be seen.

Westward from Lethbridge, train 979 headed with fresh crews at Crowsnest and Cranbrook through to the Union Pacific at Kingsgate/Eastport, shown here approaching the Macleod sub. (now removed) junction at Fort Macleod, with a trio of SD40-2s 5608 + 5643 + 5639 for power. As may well be imagined, three of those four grain elevators (except the nearest one) are now history.
