By 1999 the shared NS/CN intermodal yard at Dain City was just a fading memory as NS began its gradual retreat out of Ontario. Even CN’s days at this location were coming to a close with Trillium in the near future taking over pretty much all of CN’s spurs and secondary lines in the Niagara region. At the time there must have been a friendly rivalry going on with CN crews here as 4742 was tagged for the Buffalo Sabres hockey team while 4713 had Toronto Maple leafs markings on it. In later years this small yard here would be revived as a trans loading facility served by Trillium and now GIO Rail.

Brrrrr, even the ties show it's cold. What seemed to be a lightning fast run from London to Copetown, 394 was stuck waiting just before Bayview while waiting for traffic to clear at Snake. Im thankful that just enough sun was able to get onto the nose. Remind me to buy new winter gloves

This is why I love nose-out DPU's. Ontario is having a pretty much faux-winter, but -18 felt pretty cold at 7am. 8941 pulled through town, and stopped at Boyne. It can't be that long, I thought.....signals lined for a northbound so......2 and half hours later the second monster 1+1+1 takes the crossovers to clear the main....for a crew that I suspect will struggle to avoid an early crew change. I'll never understand the logic in running over siding length in both directions. My only regret is not offering the crew a coffee run.

This unique critter is working hard at Valbruna ASW (formerly Atlas Steel) Welland. I was told it has been working the plant for a many years and was previously painted yellow. It has definitely out lived the locomotives at the north end of the building waiting in line at SLM Recycling

Like I said, certainly no shortage of variety. Here we have 3 ACR F9`s, having just come in off the Canyon train, with a WC GP40, and ex-ACR SD40-2, an ex-BN SD45, and a WC SD45 to boot. I`d pay good money to see this lashup out on the road!!!

There was never a shortage of variety to the consists when I would go to Sault Ste. Marie in the Wisconsin Central era. Here we have a WC GP40, an ACR F9B, and a WC SD45 that are being readied for their trip back across the border after having arrived in the Sault from the U.S. earlier in the day.

Bringing up the rear on today's CP Train #516 are 5 CP Angus cabooses being moved for use elsewhere on the system. Trains just don't seem right not having a waycar on them.

VIA #74, with 6455 leading, meets CN 9633, train #381, at Jeanette's Creek. There is something to be said for double track when you have both freight and passenger service running on the same subdivision, however in CN's wisdom, the eastbound main has already been removed requiring that meets like this took place to slow the progress of, well, everything.....

People linger in Toronto Union Station's Great Hall on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Some buying tickets from the customer service agents at the wickets, some browsing for a good book to read on the train before theirs is due to depart, others waiting for loved ones and friends to arrive on inbound trains from far off places across the province and country. The Flag of Ontario watches on over all, one of the many flags that adorn the walls of the Great Hall near the upper passageways of the station.

VIA LRC #6914, and a sister LRC, run around their train after bringing train #73 into Windsor late in the day. Hard to believe the size of the trains that used to come into Windsor 20+ years ago. Now 3 or 4 cars max, and even those are barely full, are the norm.

Back when the pieces of Toronto's "Roundhouse Park" were being put together leading up to its eventual opening to the public, we find smokey TRHC 50-tonner 1 shuffling equipment around a few months after the rebuilt and working air-powered turntable was returned and reinstalled. Coupled onto a tarped CN GP7 4803 that was previously stored outside, operator Michael Guy prepares to shove the 4803 further into Stall 20 of the former CPR John St. Roundhouse and tie them down for the day. <br><br> Interior photo of the little CLC-Whitcomb critter <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=4728><b>here</b></a>.<br> And there was more to catch on the way home: <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=9964><b>the CN CWR train</b>.

The Nanticoke Road Switcher sits idle in the SOR's Garnet yard awaiting its crew to come on duty. In the foreground of this image are many earth moving machines that have been doing a lot of work alongside the yard. They will be installing new yard tracks where to work has been done in the photo. It has also been said that the GP20D's will be returning to CEFX as soon as new power arrives from G&W

Making a very rare visit to Windsor is UP AC60CW #7522. This unit was apparently testing on the CP for some months, but this was the only instance I know/heard of it being in Southwestern Ontario.

What started as a pretty sunny day has would up dark and drizzly for the last shot of the day. In the gloom, CP 5926 leads ICE 6416, DME 6087, and CP5972 out onto the Cherrywood Trestle at the east end of the siding of the same name. Thanks again for the heads up, Delic. 2034hrs.

Moving fast under a threatening sky, CP 6024 East, running as GPS2, hit the west end of Colbourne siding. One of the units, CP 5945 is trailing, was having turbo troubles and was loosing power, however it came back to life around Port Hope and they made good time east for a meet with 119 at Brighton, only to act up again east of Trenton. With the number of SD40-2's dwindling, I expect the offending unit may not get repaired and find itself TUSV/TUUS. 1710hrs.

Canadian National K5a Hudson #5700 on display at the former Michigan Central Shops at St. Thomas, ON. With their 80 inch drivers, these 4-6-4's were among the fastest steam engines on CN. Arguably the best angle in all of Parry Sound, one can view the entire town and miles surrounding from atop the old fire tower, now observation tower. Growing up seeing photographs of Canadian Pacific passenger and freight trains crossing this magnificent bridge in various Canadian railroading books I have always wanted to capture a photo of my own from this location. Although Canadian Pacific no longer runs the trains similar to those captured in Greg McDonnell's book 'Stand Fast, Craigellachie!', for instance, and southbound trains no longer run over this bridge (because of a Directional Running agreement), one can still occasionally get lucky if either CN or CP runs a lengthy train requiring DPU assistance. This is exactly what occurred in this photo, on a crisp July morning, a huge difference compared to the hot and hazy weather days prior. CN Q103 is seen soaring high above town on the Seguin River Trestle with a hotshot stack train for the west coast, leading the train nearly a mile away is CN 8896, in the middle of the train is 2114 and doing the honours on the rear is IC 2698. This train would have a straight shot to St. Cloud over the DRZ section of track in central/northern Ontario.
