About Paul O'Shell


Started my railroad career at CN in July 1969 and retired from the industry 49 years later on March 1, 2018. My area of expertise was railway Work Equipment. Reside in Kelowna, BC. I use a Nikon D850 full frame & Nikon D7200 (Nikkor 24-70mm, 24-120mm, 35mm, 18-140mm, 55-300mm, & 80-400mm) and scan with an Epson V550. Enjoy my contributions. Be safe. <b> Heterochromia </b> <br> Bi-eyed number boards on HLCX 3840 stand out quite nicely on this beautiful sunlit August morning. <br> As VIA 693 The Hudson Bay slowly reverses onto the station track at Churchill, MB I was able to catch quite a selection of revenue and OCS rolling stock in the HBRY yard. <br> Nearby in the background, the Port of Churchill grain silos and elevators wait in silent anticipation for the opportunity to be reactivated at some date in the not-too-distant future.

<b> Old Dog </b> <br> CN 50360 (1st) is an American model 830 DE locomotive crane, serial number J-3478 built in 1958. <br> After serving for several decades as a workhorse on the mainlines of northern Ontario, it has received an overhaul and fresh paint before being relegated to yard duty at the Capreol Work Equipment Repair Facility. br> Hard to believe is has been 39 years to the day since I snapped this pic. <br> CN 50360 was involved in a derailment and wrecked on February 16, 1999 at Mac Yard Concord, ON. It was scrapped on site.

<b> All is quiet at the depot </b> <br> After the arrival of VIA 693 The Hudson Bay it doesn't take long before the station and platform area are void of all activity. <br> Passengers and crew have all departed to their place of lodging, and the VIA portion of the building will be unoccupied until later in the day just before the departure of southbound VIA 692 at 19:30 hrs. <br> The station is, however, open to the public so they can visit the Parks Canada museum housed in the former waiting room/baggage area in the lower level.

<b> It's there somewhere </b> <br> Even though the CN transfer van on static display at the Canora, SK station/railway museum did not have a road number stenciled on it, I was able to easily locate it by looking on the side/end of the car body frame where most CN rolling stock (at least at one time) had the car i.d. stamped. <br> Maybe on my next trip to Churchill I'll find the van fully painted, logo'd, numbered, and lettered. :-)

<b> You won't go hungry </b> <br> These pastries are available to Sleeper Plus passengers all day, every day on VIA #1 & #2 The Canadian. There is also a selection of coffee, teas, and hot chocolate, along with fresh fruit. <br> I love the snack table! :-)

<b> CANORA, this station stop, CANORA </b> <br> VIA 6419 is todays leader on VIA 692 The Hudson Bay at Canora, SK. Mile 124.9 CN Togo Sub. <br> On static display at the end of the station/Railway Museum is transfer van CN 76659, while in the distance you can see CN 3049 which is very much still in service and waiting for its next assignment. <br> The VIA yellow step boxes glow in the bright sun waiting for us to entrain once the ALL ABOARD call is given. :-)

<b> Before sunrise </b> <br> Before the sun comes up and turns off the stations photocell lights, VIA 692 The Hudson Bay is making its scheduled stop at the remote northern Manitoba community of Ilford. <br> Two passengers to board, a few bags to load, and we'll be on our way south in a few short minutes. <b> Stately Manor </b> <br> The VIA station/Railway Museum at Dauphin is an imposing structure that has been beautifully preserved. <br> After departing Winnipeg, this first scheduled stop for VIA 693 The Hudson Bay offers passengers an opportunity to stretch their legs and enjoy a beautiful afternoon on the platform and surrounding area. <br> Unknown at this point in the journey was that the lead unit VIA 6433 would be switched out to the trailing position this evening at The Pas, MB due to a radio failure, making us 6+ hours late the next morning.

<b> Full on sun </b> <br> As seen from VIA 8511 Skyline dome on VIA 692 The Hudson Bay, CN 2682 notches it up as it leads a westbound freight out of Winnipeg on CN's Rivers Sub. this beautiful September 21, 2024 afternoon. <br> The CN head end crew is just beginning their trip while mine is coming to an end in a few short minutes upon arrival at Winnipeg Union Station.

<b> ALL ABOARD </b> <br> Skyline car attendant Sean stands by the step box at the vestibule door of economy coach VIA 8130 at the Churchill station waiting for the last of the economy class passengers to board VIA 692 The Hudson Bay. <br> The baggage truck can be seen driving down the platform after loading all the luggage and supplies for the southbound journey. <br> I enjoyed a full day in the town of Churchill, and the rain was kind enough to hold off until a half hour before boarding. <b> Service appointment required </b> <br> HLCX 1084 is in front of the station in the yard at Churchill, MB in a steady, light rain switching cars from the inbound way freight, and marshalling others from the ramp tracks that will be departing on tomorrows southbound run. <br> A ditch light bulb needs to be replaced on the rear of the locomotive at the next service opportunity.

<b> Crew change at Wabowden </b> <br> With VIA 693 The Hudson Bay running more than 6 hours late, it was necessary for the headend crew to be changed out at the unexpected remote location of Wabowden, MB. <br> Due to a radio failure in the original leading unit VIA 6433 it was necessary to swap the locomotive positions at The Pas, MB during the night time scheduled stop resulting in a lengthy delay which ultimately shortened the crews operating time. <br> Just another part of the adventure! :-)

<b> Two-up two-down </b> <br> Soiled linen bags lay in the hallway in the roomette end of sleeping car VIA 8224 Chateau Roberval. <br> Room attendant Brian has just finished making up the two-up two-down staggered roomettes (cabin for one in VIA lingo) and is now tending to the double bedrooms in the middle of the car. <br> With all the 'cabins for two' sold out on this trip, it was my first time in a roomette since the early 1980's. I found the bed more comfortable than in the bedroom for two that I usually occupy, but it was just a little too cramped for those of us that have to get up in the middle of the night (if you know what I mean). ???? Going forward, it's back to a full bedroom for two for me. <br> I sure hope these Budd stainless steel sleepers are around for another 10-12 years at least.

<b> Standing by </b> <br> VIA 693 The Hudson Bay has backed into the station track at Churchill, passengers have detrained, baggage has been unloaded, and all but one of the local shuttle vans has departed. <br> VIA 6419 & VIA 6433 have not been plugged into wayside power and will idle away for the entire day.<br> This same consist will depart at 19:30 hrs. this same day as VIA 692 The Hudson Bay destined for Winnipeg. <br> It's shaping up to be a beautiful day to wander the town.
