About Paul O'Shell

Started my railroad career at CN in July 1969 and retired from the industry 49 years later on March 1, 2018. My area of expertise was railway Work Equipment. Reside in Kelowna, BC. I use a Nikon D850 full frame & Nikon D7200 (Nikkor 24-70mm, 24-120mm, 35mm, 18-140mm, 55-300mm, & 80-400mm) and scan with an Epson V550. Enjoy my contributions. Be safe. CN 10800 & CN 10900 (ex-Kaoham Shuttle) aka TU-108 and TU-109, built in 1999 by Jim Busby Services of California, sit on a deadline track near the Work Equipment Repair Facility in Kamloops Yard on May 3, 2023 <br>
Each time I have passed through Kamloops North in the past 2-3 years, these vehicles show continuing signs of being slowly cannibalized for parts.

ONT 206 (ex-BCOL 159, exx-VIA 15483, exxx-CN 15483) sits in line with several other pieces of passenger equipment after being prep'd for a trip to a western Canada museum destination. Taken during a work related visit to Ontario Northland facilities in North Bay, ON September 2, 2015.

The last of the four ex-VIA/exx-CN passenger cars I photographed while in The Pas, MB this past March, and now lettered for Keewatin Railway Company is KRC 9631. <br>
KRC 9631 is (ex-VIA 9631, exx-CN 9631, nee-CN 9250), a Class BE-73-H, 73 foot 6 inch baggage car. It was built by NSC in 1955. <br>
This car houses two diesel driven generators (one running, one backup), a large furnace for keeping the baggage compartment warm during the brutally cold winter months, and a large open area for carrying baggage, supplies, and other items for the long journey of the Pukatawagan Mixed. <br>
Having access all around the exterior of the cars where they were stored, and then a full tour on board once the 'Mixed' was made up was an experience I will long remember. The KRC train crew and local supervisor where a great bunch of guys and welcomed all my requests for information and photo opportunities. :-)

ONT 1741 & ONT 2205 occupy some space on each of the two elevated service tracks in the ONR diesel shop at North Bay, ON April 13, 2023. I was able to view quite the variety of home and foreign power during my visit to the shops and yard this day.

One of the two ex-VIA/exx-CN passenger cars on KRC's #291 The Pukatawagan Mixed on March 16, 2023, was KRC 5649 (ex-VIA 5649, exx-CN 5649) Class PB-79-A, 79 foot First Class car. It was built by CC&F in 1954, and converted to it's current baggage/coach configuration in 1998. <br>
Prior to being placed behind the locomotives for today's departure, KRC 5649 sits at the south end of The Pas station plugged in to wayside power and coupled to baggage car KRC 9631 .

A street side view of the impressive Sioux Lookout, ON station with VIA 001 The Canadian stretched out along the platform on the CN's Allanwater and Redditt Sub. mainline track. <br>
With refueling and a headend crew change taking place here, the front of the train is only a few passenger cars past the west end of the station leaving about 20 car lengths, or more than a 1/4 mile walking distance for folks in the Prestige Class to make their way to this location. <br>
It was a cool but pleasant mid-day arrival in The Sioux and lots of passengers took advantage of the 35-minute stop to detrain and stretch their legs.

CMQ 3057 sits on one of the elevated diesel shop service tracks inside the ONR's North Bay, ON locomotive repair facility on April 13, 2023. Access to all areas of the locomotive for service, maintenance, and repairs is possible in this multi-tiered area of the building.

Fresh out of the shop from repair and repaint, ONT 2120 soaks up the morning sun on a beautiful mid-April 2023 morning in the ONR yard at North Bay, ON. <br>
This is the first time I have seen that slogan stenciled at the trailing end of the long hood.

Only two of the four available KRC passenger cars at The Pas, MB were required on the Pukatawagan Mixed on this beautiful, freezing cold, March 16, 2023 morning, so two were left behind on a stub track at the south end of the station building.<br>
One of the two cars left behind was KRC 5648 (ex-VIA 5648, exx-CN 5648). It was once a CN Class PB-79-A, 79' 0" First Class car, built by CC&F in 1954. It was converted to its current baggage/coach configuration in 1998.<br>

Not required on KRC 291 The Pukatawagan Mixed this cold, sunny March 16, 2023 day, KRC 3248 (ex-VIA 3248, exx-CN 3248, exxx-CN 5454) Class PB-79-A 1st class car, CC&F built 1954, is left on a stub track at the south end of The Pas, MB VIA station. <br>
There are a total of four ex-VIA/exx-CN passenger cars in The Pas available for use on the Puk Mixed. Only two (1 baggage and 1 coach) were needed on this day.

HCRY 3802 (ex-PC 3246) GP40-3 is inside the ONR diesel shop in North Bay, ON for a little mechanical attention on this mid-April 2023 morning. Surrounded by traction motors, gear cases, and a plethora of other locomotive components, a shop employee tends to some work at the long hood end of the unit. With all the engine bay doors open it appears there will be some power plant maintenance taking place as well.

CNFD 100004, CNFD 100005, and CNFD 100006 make up the 'Poseidon' fire fighting consist that is sitting ready in CN's Kamloops, BC Yard on May 3, 2023. <br>
The threat of wild fires was already in the news as I rode VIA 001 The Canadian westbound on this April 30 - May 4 trip. I'm sure these purpose built cars and their support crew were pressed into service in the coming days.

'On the move' <br>
KRC 291 The Pukatawagan Mixed has all its passengers, baggage, and supplies on board for today's trip out of The Pas, MB. The classic ex-VIA/exx-CN passenger equipment is tucked in right behind the PRLX power, with trailing mixed freight cars to bring up the rear on a beautiful but quite cold March 16, 2023. <br>
The yard tracks in front of the station had been buzzing with activity a few hours earlier when 'The Mixed' was being assembled for today's run, but after departure, there was no movement at all until quite some time later.

CN 3273 is in the house! <br>
CN 3273 waits for some attention from the shop staff inside the ONR diesel shop at ONR North Bay, ON April 13, 2023 along with a tremendous array of other home and foreign power.

CN 61082 is an Engineering Dept. BK&D (bunk, kitchen & diner). <br>
This 1921 Pullman built car started life as CN 1713 Makura, a Class PS-73-P, 73 foot 6 inch sleeping car. It was converted from a sleeper to Engineering MoW service in July 1961. <br>
I captured this scene while working in the yard at Hornepayne, ON in the summer of 1976.

Since it's starting to get a little warm outside (at least in the Hamilton/Niagara region) I thought I'd offer up a little cold and snow photo to remember the winter we just left behind. <br>
Empty flatcar, empty yard, empty grain elevator, empty passenger train! <br>
Arriving as VIA 693 'The Hudson Bay' earlier in the day at 09:00, the consist sits idling in front of the Churchill, MB station. All passengers have detrained, and the last few shuttle vehicles remain gather on the platform to collect the last baggage for delivery to various lodging locations around the town. <br>
In a few short hours at 19:30, this consist will become VIA 690 and will begin its southward journey to The Pas, MB. <br>
In the meantime, I have 9+ hours to walk around the town and railyard looking for some interesting images to capture.

RS 67 is far from home rails as she receives some mechanical attention inside the ONR diesel shop in North Bay, ON on April 13, 2023. Sitting on one of the elevated service tracks, RS 67 is keeping CN 3273 on the next track company during her visit to Ontario.

It has been a number of years since ONT 503 last worked a derailment on the ONR. It now sits dead on a yard track outside the ONR shops in North Bay seemingly waiting for its next call that will never come. <br>
ONT 503 is an Industrial Works 160 ton wrecker, serial number 3980, built in 1919. I think she looks pretty darn good for 104 years old! :-)
