CN 4725 and CN 4906 are tied down in BA52 with a good string of cars trailing. After the advance warning alerts, the Automatic Engine Shutdown/Start-up (AESS) aka Smart Start initiated the engine cranking sequence to get the prime mover going, with a short puff of exhaust, 4725 comes to life and a smooth idle.

Perkan Rail Services mobile crane is completing the lift and getting VIA 6437 back on the rails after an encounter with a loaded low-boy tractor-trailer at the Quabbin Road crossing in Mallorytown. The collision resulted in the derailment of VIA 6437 and the baggage car.

The former Canadian National Railway station at Caledonia, constructed in 1908 by the Grand Trunk Railway on the site of the previous station which was destroyed by fire in 1906. The station also served the Hamilton and Northwestern Railway. Originally located at Mile 59.58 Dunnville Subdivision and Mile 14.50 Hagersville Subdivision. Passenger service ended October 26th, 1957. The nicely restored caboose, ex-CNR 78447 with a Grand Trunk Railway logo sits out back with a few other railway ornaments. Today the building houses the Caledonia Regional Chamber of Commerce and a museum.

GMTX 333 sits locked up in the yard at Orangeville, two tracks full of hoppers, maybe plastic pellets destined for Clorox, a contractor tidies up old ties. This sure looks like a viable railway to me. Who would think that in a little more than 12 month the end would come.

The track side view of the former Canadian Pacific Railway Owen Sound station. Situated on the east side of Owen Sound Harbour, the area is void of railway activity or remnants of what was once a railroad. Located at Mile 73.0 on the Owen Sound Subdivision, the station was built in 1946-47. Today the station is home to Mudtown Station Brewery and Restaurant, although there would be no stopping here today to enjoy the patio.

Spanning the North Channel between Goat Island and Manitoulin Island, the former Canadian Pacific Railway Swing Bridge was located at Mile 38.27 Little Current Subdivision. The bridge was opened to rail traffic in October 1913 providing a rail link to Little Current, the western terminus of the Algoma Eastern Railway. In November 1945 modifications to add a vehicular deck for road traffic were completed providing a road link to Manitoulin Island. The bridge was shared by rail and road traffic until the abandonment of the rail line into Little Current. Now known as the Little Current Swing Bridge, it carries a single lane of road traffic and a pedestrian sidewalk. The bridge is a designated Ontario Heritage Property. A new bridge is planned to be built to the west of the existing bridge.

Located on the west side of the harbour, the former CNR station at Owen Sound was constructed in 1931 by Canadian National Railway replacing the original Grand Trunk Railway station built in 1894. The building currently houses the Owen Sound Visitor Centre and the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre (CWHC) which includes the Marine and Rail Waterfront Museum. Lots of railway memorabilia and a model railway on display. The former station is well maintained.

Having crossed over at CN Boyne/CP Reynolds, it sounds like the throttle is pulled all the way back and CN 107 is getting up to speed as it crosses the trestle over Parry Sound Harbour heading northward on the CP Parry Sound Sub. portion of the Directional Running Zone (DRZ).

What would have been the trackside of the former CNR Wiarton station. The station was built by the Grand Trunk Railway in 1904 as a "proper station" to replace the original depot opened in 1882. The station is located in Bluewater Park on the shore of Colpoy's Bay and houses the Wiarton Information Centre, there are many railway artifacts inside. The last passenger train departed the station in October 1957 and the station closed in 1961. The station was moved from its original location at the corner of Claude St. and George St. (44.742041, -81.138972) in 1971. The pavilion was added in 2004. A well restored and maintained structure.

Bioveld 1305 is tied down inside the gate of the former Resolute Forest Products/Ontario Paper Company facility and what is now part of the Thorold Multimodal Hub in Allanburg. A piece of track machinery has taken over the 1305's normal parking spot, which is great as it makes 1305 easier viewing from Niagara Falls Road. Some new ties have been installed under the rails outside the gate house, and bundles of ties are spread out toward Hayes Road, the crossing signals need some rehabilitation also. Hopefully we'll see some rail action soon. I would sure like to see what is behind those plywood doors?

Trillium Railway 108 (maybe GIO now?) in stealth black sits tied down just inside the gate at the former Martech facility on Rusholme Road in Welland. The former Martech Industries building has been leveled and not much remains on the property except a few excavators cleaning up what remains and out of sight to the left IC1504, IC 1506, CN 4100 and Stelco 615 sit coupled, lined up along the fence wondering will they be next?

Not much happening at Montague station today, other than the rail rusting. The station was located at the end of the Montague Sub., opening on Dominion Day, July 1 1906. The station was purchased by the Town of Montague in 1984. The renovated station continues to be a landmark in Montague today.

Built in 1904 and almost 70 years after bringing up the rear of CNR Mixed 264 riding the rails through Algonquin Park, the prestige days are done as former CNR 77190 (ex -GTR 90066) sits in deteriorating condition on its own wheels in a field off Tutela Heights Road, Brantford, Ont.. After many miles on the rails the caboose may have served well as a bunkie or other accommodation over the post railway years at this location, but those days are sadly gone now too. Today lesson is “How not to apply identification markings on a locomotive”. Sitting in Brantford Yard, CN 4906 with freehand identification markings is coupled to the more appropriately identified GTW 6425. Time to take away the crayons and order some pre-cut vinyl CN and number 4-9-0-6 decals.
