CP 3042 with CP 2242 and three cars trailing heads south on the Hamilton Belt Line entering Beach Road crossing, they will then duck under the restricted overhead clearance of the Grimsby Sub. subway on their way to Kinnear Yard. Based on the time of day it's bean time.

On a beautiful sunny morning CN 2325 leads BCOL 4649 and CN 2304 eastward of the north track of the Grimsby Sub. about to enter the crossing at Gage Avenue. I'm guessing this is 421.

A beautiful sunny morning and what was a quick trip to the Hamilton Transload Terminal on Hobson Road North for the 0700 Assignment as they return with the same two tanks they went in with, maybe their lift wasn't ready.

Via #1 "The Canadian" making the "On Time" 1715h departure from White River, Ontario. It's an opportunity to open the top half of the vestibule door and take in the view toward the head-end, a VIA A-B consist pulling a mix of steam equipped VIA "Blue and Yellow" and "Budd Stainless" equipment.

With original CP red showing through GIO (TRRY) 1859 with eight New NS coil cars slowly make their way up the Niagara Escarpment alongside the Welland Canal at Lock 7. The Conductor gives a quick look up before they pass under the Welland Canals Parkway at Mile 5.90 Thorold Spur. They will continue south to interchange the NS cars presumably with CP.

IC 2710, CN 8956 have just passed the Station One Mile Sign for Tansley as A435 heads down the North Track, Halton Sub. at Mile 42.20 about to enter No. 1 Sideroad crossing.

Running in light power on the Industrial Lead with CP 2242 leading, the crew has made the joint for their lift on the northern most track. There are 4 tracks between Strathearne Ave and Parkdale Ave. N., two tracks are filled with AIMX (American Iron and Steel Group) high sided gons and the third track with CCX Carbon Black hoppers. The fourth track is empty and is most likely used by AIM 1936 as the run around after spotting the loads from AIM Recycling. I could see the headlight of AIM 1936 working in the distance east of Parkdale Ave. N.. The Engineman has changed ends with CP 3129 now leading and waits for the air as the crew walks back to the headend, after entraining they will start to pull west back toward Adams Yard, CP 3042, CP 2242 along with about 20 loaded AIMX gons trailing.

As the Engineman takes a look back the Switchman keeps a close eye on the movement as AIM 1936 "Peter Black" reverses toward Parkdale Ave. N. with a cut of high side gondolas. The AIM 1936 is a unique looking creature but handles the cars well. American Iron & Metal seems to be doing a good business based on the number of cars being loaded.

The nose is raised and wings are closed as plow CN 55205 passes the CN Westree station, Mile 64.3 Ruel Sub., CN 9568 is providing the power today.

NSCX 8704 with recently applied National Steel Car identification is stopped on the lead just to the left of the Guard House at National Steel Car, Hamilton. The unit had moved back and forth on the lead, the crew may be familiarizing themselves with their new locomotive.

Well here I am standing on the same spot Mr. Mooney stood 45 years earlier and looking at the field side of the former CNR Wiarton station. http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=43326 Today this well preserved and maintained structure houses the Wiarton Information Centre. The open-air addition on the left was added in 2004 and is called the "Lena V. Hatt Memorial Pavilion", it occupies the space of the former freight shed which was removed in 1971.

The view looking forward from the trailing GEC Alsthom unit as we head eastbound into some heavy rain on the Caramat Sub. with the CN 5647 leading. Note - Exact location approximate, somewhere east of Longlac.

The A-B-A consist with VIA 1423 leading has just entered the Lower Spiral Tunnel (2922-feet in length) as VIA # 1 The Canadian continues to descend "The Hill" toward Field. After sitting in the dome car through the Upper Spiral Tunnel I took the opportunity and relocated into the vestibule, opening the top half of the Dutch door to get this photo and a few more during the remainder of the descent into Field. The Spiral Tunnels, which opened to traffic in 1909 reduced the heavy and somewhat dangerous grade from 4.5% to 2.2%.

Via #1 "The Canadian" has just made the scheduled 1705h station stop at White River, this was my first opportunity to step off and take a few photos. I had boarded VIA #1 at Barrie at 0140h, it wasn't too long after that we crossed over at CN Boyne and will be riding CP rails for the remainder of the journey to Vancouver. The train is a mix of steam equipped VIA blue and yellow and Budd equipment with the blue stripe along the upper car body.

VIA 73 makes the station stop in Brantford, detraining and entraining a few passengers. I presume the first coach up is the head end buffer car.

CN 4725 and CN 4906 are tied down in BA52 with a good string of cars trailing. After the advance warning alerts, the Automatic Engine Shutdown/Start-up (AESS) aka Smart Start initiated the engine cranking sequence to get the prime mover going, with a short puff of exhaust, 4725 comes to life and a smooth idle.
