Heading home to Calgary after a fantastic Canadian tour, the CP "Canada 150" Train passes the south end of Palgrave Siding.
She takes with her loads of great memories, along with what I sense is a new and welcome spirit at CP.

Running 7 hours late, VIA 2 provided an opportunity to capture her passage in late afternoon.. In addition to her 3 units and 14 cars, spliced between the first and second unit were 2 Rocky Mountaineer "Gold Leaf" cars heading to North Bay for overhaul.

With mother nature at her best, CN 105 adds to the colour and makes a nice reflection as she passes MP 94.5 of the Bala Sub.

In the prairies they're called slews, and they are colourful, full of different grasses, water vegetation and of course wildlife. They dot the landscape and I soon began to appreciate their beauty as compared to Ontario ponds.
CN 317 has just met eastbound 302 at Stenberg, and is passing a slew at MP 171.4 of the Rivers Sub.

The beautiful "prairie icons" are getting fewer and fewer, but as proven in this image, some nice ones still exist.CN 119 passes the elevator at Harte MB.

CP 113 is just about to split the signals at MP 59, 3 milkes to the west of Hargrave on the Broadview Sub. Back-lighting is the main challenge when shooting this train in western Manitoba.

The UNO trestle on CN's mainline through Manitoba has always been on my "must see" list. When Cando asked if I wanted to work as a hogger for a few weeks at their Cromer crude oil loading facility I jumped at the chance.
With a rental car and the way the shifts worked, there was loads of time for railfan photography.
CP was fairly quiet, but certainly not CN. It was worth the extra miles to see and shoot the non-stop action, and the terrain was anything but boring.

Literally " lifting the ballast ", CP 100 approaches MP 59 of the Broadview Sub. The previous day, a ballast regulator had been working the area, and everything behind 8865 is now getting obscured with dust.

CN 316 passes through Washago on a gray June morning. 30 minutes later, tornado warnings were issued for the area. Luckily they did not materialize, but the downpours did !
If the old coal tower could talk, one can only imagine the great tales it would tell. Oh to dream ---

The " Canadian " is always a treat to photograph, and with her being a few hours late on a fairly consistant basis, the chances of shooting her in daylight has increased greatly.
Today VIA 002 was operating 6 hours off the advertised, and provided the perfect opportunity to capture her in all her silver splendor.
Two units and 20 cars. She's one beautiful train !

IC 1010 sure gets around. Just 2 days after Cal Young took his great image of her hauling 112 at Young SK, I caught her at 08:42 on May 7 pulling 106 on the Kingston Sub. Looks like the second unit is the same also.

Viewed from the Train Movement Directors window of Scott St interlocking tower, GO 654 leads the 11:13 eastbound train to Oshawa.
The entire station is a hive of construction activity, both at track level and throughout the public areas. The new brighter train shed can be seen above the trains consist.

No 2200's on the Streetsville Switcher today. After getting the crew of the Orangeville wayfreight to leave their empties north of Alpha Mills Road and duck 4009 into the runaround and onto their northbound cars, the CP crew grabs the interchange cars and heads toward Streetsville yard.

CP 8754 is the DPU on an eastbound crude oil train led by CP 8843. Image was taken from OBRY's 4009 as it sat awaiting the arrival of CP's Streetsville Switcher, with 10 cars for the shortline.

Unlike the Class 1's and a few larger shortlines, the OBRY does not have the luxury or convenience of a shop.
Everything, from changing brakeshoes to main generator change-outs are done outside, regardless of the weather.
A bitterly cold March 5, found the maintenance crew from Lambton Diesel Services changing the number 2 traction motor on 4009. The new axle has been installed on the truck and is now being pushed into position so 4009 can be lowered.
Luckily there is a Tim's only blocks away !

Space is often limited at Streetsville Junction, and quite often some good juggling goes on between the CP and OBRY crews.
Jan 13 was no exception.
With Streetsville already plugged, and OBRY arriving with 11 empties, a quick plan was devised between the crews.
OBRY left the 11 well north of the Alpha Mills crossing, then re-marshalled the outbound cars to get DG's and Vulsay cars on the tail-end while the CP crew finished lunch down by the already full "pig pen",
Once completed and OBRY was tucked into the interchange, the T24 crew came north, grabbed the 11 and headed south.
Once the domain of 8200's, 3105 and 3106 have become regulars on the Streetsville.
Perfect weather made for a colourful "branchline meet".

After setting off 24 log loads at the Alpac Mill, we grabbed 24 empties and headed to Boyle and Lac la Biche as Train 109.
While the sun is highlighting our train, a look back over the consist shows we are racing a rapidly approaching storm.
About 20 minutes later, the skies opened.

Train 110 has just pushed over the weigh scales and into the unloading position at the giant Alberta-Pacific Mill.

Even before the conductor has set hand brakes and cut-off the power, one of the massive unloaders has already started work.

B610 arrives at the first crossing south of Lac La Biche for a crew trade-off. We will take this train to Boyle, switch out the log cars then leave the rest of the train for CN. We'll then change ends, and with 4008 leading, lift the interchange cars from CN and head north as 609. 5232 was a rough rider, and ANY crews nick-named her "waltzing Matilda".

Before CN once again took over the former NAR Waterways Sub in 2008, it was operated by Cando Rail Services as the Athabasca Northern Railway. On two separate occasions during 2007, I was based in Lac La Biche,running trains between our connection with CN at Boyle AB and Fort McMurray. Remote country to say the least,and with meets, log loading, track work delays etc., the ability to grab an image was often there. I'll post more over the next few weeks, but here's the first.We've just traded trains with the southbound crew, and are waiting for Clearance to head south with 110, an Alpac log train. 4009 is the leader, and after CN took over the ANY, 4009 was transfered to Orangeville ON.
