CP 113 lead by 8909 hugs the spectacular shoreline of Lake Superior as she passes through Cavers. The area is renowned for tunnels, rock cuts and slide fences. It was one of the most expensive areas to build when the CPR first crossed the country. The original "cornerstone" is still part of this beautiful wall, and is a credit to the great workmanship that went on in those days.

CP's old Owen Sound Sub was renowned for snow, and certain areas were always known for their drifting, even south of Orangeville.
Shortline operator Cando, did not have the luxury of the plows that CP had regularly assigned to Orangeville, so when drifts were encountered, it was " put her in 8 " and blast your way through.
That is exactly what southbound high-nosed Geep 1000 is doing at Mile 31 on this blustery Feb 7 2006.

Doing a reconnaissance trip a few weeks prior to the Inaugural run paid big dividends. 2816 had a tight schedule of "appearances" at towns between Vancouver and Calgary, and they couldn't dawdle to allow the film crew to catch up. We had our spots planned, and with no small amount of hectic scrambling and driving we usually made it.
One bonus at Eldon, to the west of Banff, was finding a Westbound tucked away in the siding awaiting 2816's passage.

The final day of 2816's Inaugural Run from Vancouver to Calgary was magnificent.
Departure from Lake Louise was of course "on time" and with moist crisp mountain air, the exhaust from 2816 could not have been more perfect. The train rounding Morant's Curve, MP 114 of the Laggan Sub.

Having won the contract from CP to visually record the restoration and return to service of 2816 allowed the type of access to the Railway that I could previously only have dreamed of.
We both chased and rode the 2816 between Vancouver and Calgary, and if the weather co-operated, had a chopper on standby for the section from Revelstoke to Golden.
Indeed the weather was on our side, and after chasing 2816 from Revelstoke to Glacier by truck, I switched places and boarded the chopper for the airborne chase from Glacier to Golden.

CP's Holiday Train needs no introduction. It's become a "must see " event and does so much good for food banks right across the country.
Just prior to it's next stop at Midhurst, just outside of Barrie Ontario, the crews of the Cando Rail Services local and CP's Holiday Train exchange waves in the true spirit of the season and railroading.

A different angle about half an hour earlier than a shot I posted a few days ago of CN's Business Car Train and the Canadian side by side at Union. Shades of the old days with The Canadian and Super Continental if you ignore the fact those are ex Illinois Central units, and probably spent thousands of miles at the head-end of The City of New Orleans.

Lucky enough to be " tipped off " as well as given full access to the platforms at Union, I have to admit that a few times on the evening of Nov 21 2000, I thought I was in " back to the future" mode. Was it the Super Continental waiting to depart beside CP's just arrived Canadian? Of course not. CN never had E's on the Super and CP's Canadian never had blue head boards. No, the VIA Canadian had arrived, but beside it was a CN Business Car train, totally resplendent in green and gold, and those E units could never have looked better. Oh to dream !!

Doing every bit of the allowed Maximum Track Speed of 80 mph, CN Northern 6167 makes a dramatic "run for the hill" as she approaches with a westbound Excursion. So much has changed since 1963. 6167 resides in Guelph, Port Union station is long gone, the Oshawa Sub is now the Kingston Sub, ABS signals are now CTC, and the GO Rouge Hill station would be just to the tail-end of 6167's train now.

CCGX 1001, the regular BCRY high-nosed Geep ventured up the remains of the Penetang Spur on Aug 9, to retrieve six tank cars which have been stored on the line since 2017. If the price of oil continues to rise, more tank cars could be called back into revenue service.

Operating 12 hours late, VIA 1 gave me the opportunity to try a shot I've always wanted to make, that of the consist spread across the Newmarket Sub / York Sub flyover.
Under gray humid skies, and with the sun on the east side of the train, VIA 1 still makes a great sight, as she slows to a stop before commencing the reverse movement onto the York Sub. This procedure is usually performed at 22:55, so the 12 hour delay was perfect for capturing the operation.

After delivering my old friend CCGX 4015 to the Streetsville Interchange on June 30, she is finally
heading to her new home.
CP 421 will deliver her to Terrace Bay, where switching the large pulp and paper mill will be the new role. A little easier than fighting the grades on the old Owen Sound Sub.
Was nice to see her again as she passed MP 47 of the Mactier Sub.

With spring finally in the air, the northbound Orangeville Wayfreight passes MP 21 on a rare Wednesday run.

CP's Streetsville Switcher was very late on Tuesday, so in true shortline fashion, Cando ran an extra to service the customers.

After 17 years, the Cando era will soon come to a close on this line. Effective July 1, Trillium Rail will take over operation of the 35 mile line.

By 1978, CP Rail was less than enthused with passenger service, and VIA was going to inherit it later that year anyhow. Corporate pride certainly didn't even enter the equation when 1407 was assigned as lead unit on The Canadian.
A shutdown of the Angus paint shop left a few units unpainted, and rather than let them sit, CP put them on the road until space became available at the Ogden paint shop.
1407 was one of them, and she is seen ready to depart Calgary with train 2, the eastbound Canadian, Feb 5, 1978.

There has always been something about the " Canadian " that catches my attention. The night of October 13, 1981 was no exception.

While working as a trainman for CP in Revelstoke, the camera was easy to throw in the grip, but not a tripod. As I walked to the crew bus for a ride to the head-end of our eastbound coal train, whose caboose can be seen just to the right of the 1410, I turned briefly, liked what I saw and decided to try the shot. Hand held, Kodachrome 64 pushed to the limit, and only so much available light. Oh for the digital days.

I was pleased with the result. The hogger taking a last look at the orders, the watering and fueling of the units complete, and the headlight just turned to bright. Seconds later, No.1 would be westbound on the Shuswap Sub. and I would be rolling east to Golden.

VIA 2, the eastbound Canadian is crossing the Columbia River bridge at Revelstoke BC with a colourful array of equipment. Apart from the Geep, it could easily pass for a Rapido Model Trains version of the Canadian.

Some nights you never know what's around the next corner and that sure proved correct as we approached Brookmere BC in the middle of the night Oct. 14, 1981.

( I was working as a Trainman out of Revelstoke BC, and had been sent to Penticton to work the Spences Bridge freight for two trips account their regular Trainman booking off. It was a line I had never been on before. )

I thought I was seeing things ! After all, it was 1981, steam had been gone for decades, and there ahead was a water tower complete with not one, but two spouts. Hogger Palmer Sather chuckled and said don't worry, we'll make a stop eastbound so you can get some pictures in daylight.

True to his word, on my second KVR trip, Oct 16, we ground to a halt so I could capture this unique tank which served both the CPR and Great Northern at this former Division Point. Oh if that tank could talk.

Fog is quite common in mountain valleys during fall, and the morning of Oct 12, 1981 was no exception.

Approaching Craigellachie on Hwy 1, I spotted the headlight of what looked like the Vernon wayfreight in the siding. I pulled over, and the crew told me they were waiting for a slightly tardy VIA No.2.

The picture I captured that morning shows 2 looming out of the fog, under the watchful eye of the wayfreight conductor. Note the open phone box door. A sure sign he'd been asking the Dispatcher ( no RTC's in those days )
how much longer they'd be stuck here. Across from the Conductor is the Last Spike monument, which in a few years would be upgraded to a much more suitable attraction.

In 1981, there was still plenty of branchline character along the CP Princeton Sub. The Princeton wayfreight is arriving at Merritt with just a van behind still high nosed GP9 8617. The train order board is a study in simplicity, and the station is about as basic as they got. Unfortunately, a few short years later, it would all be gone.

Heading home to Calgary after a fantastic Canadian tour, the CP "Canada 150" Train passes the south end of Palgrave Siding.
She takes with her loads of great memories, along with what I sense is a new and welcome spirit at CP.
Safe travels 1401 !!
