The sun is barely above the horizon as it casts a reddish glint on the cab of Alco S2 7024. The telltale " Alco smoke" shows the crew has just arrived and started their unit. Just down the lead, S 13 108 awaits another Trillium crew, on-duty an hour later. 7024 will today work the Canal-Harbour Job which will take her to Welland and St Catharines. 7024 has loads of miles and probably plenty of interesting stories. She started life in October 1944 !

There is certainly no doubt about the location of CP 9158 West. Just one mile into her 128.5 mile run to Kamloops, 9158 crosses the west entrance to town from the Trans Canada Highway.

Train No. 11 The Ocean is just departing Halifax enroute to Montreal. The short 10 car consist is typical for the after Christmas operation. FPA4 6770 and it's accompanying FP9B glisten in the bone chilling but brilliant Maritime sunshine. In the distance, two CN units work the yard, which not many years in the future will become a container port.

Things sure change in a short period of time. An eastbound GO Train of single level cars lead by an APCU, passes the sight of the former Port Union CN station just west of Rouge Hill. The spur track used to be the station Team Track and was regularly used for the "pushers" which would help westbound trains up the hill to Scarboro. Just east of 702 on the lakeside, would have been the classic CNR water tank and across from it near the pick-up truck a standpipe for steam locomotives to take on water before attacking the grade.

Riding the last official train east from Bishops Falls to St Johns was probably the most emotional trip I have ever ridden. Careers were coming to an end, a cross province link was being broken and a way of life was terminating. While 944E made its way east in pouring rain, Engineman M Greening suggested we should at least get a video run-by and photo at a curve he thought would be perfect. A couple of miles ahead, he stopped, let me off, backed up and came forward for the "runpast". So typical of Newfie friendliness. I made many new friends those last few days and even re-visited some years later.

It is hard to believe that the CN shut down operations in Newfoundland coming up on 32 years ago. In March 1988, the mainline was still running, but so many of the branches had already seen the last train. The little 800 series G-8's which had plied those rails for so long were now redundant, and as seen in this image, they were slowly being cut up. A sad sight indeed at the St Johns CN shop.

While we all enjoy the equipment end of railroading, images like A. Mooney's recent one of the female conductor "making the joint" highlights the human side, the side of railroading that is continually vanishing. On that note, one of the most highly respected and well remembered locomotive engineers on the CP side around Toronto, passed away on Jan 27 at the age of 88. Mac Allen, the son of a CP coal dock worker in Britt ON made a career running trains. He was one of very few left who had run revenue steam. He was well known for his pride in himself, the CPR and his locomotives. His cabs, both steam and diesel were always made spotless and left that way for the next crew. He trained and mentored so many of today's CP hoggers working out of Toronto and is always remembered by them in the highest regards. This image shows him in his element. Running On Time with an F unit, in a spotless cab, dressed like a locomotive engineer on CP's Flagship train. Well done Mac Allen and Clear signals all the way !!

It seems like forever that we have been studying, researching and talking about higher-speed rail, and here's more proof. CP Rail hosted the X2000 train-set along many of its lines in 1993. Here she is shown at Toronto Union to be introduced to the press and other invited guests. She was pulled by an Amtrak F40 seen at the far end.

It's hard to believe how the time has gone, but over 34 years ago, the F40PH was introduced to the public and press at Toronto Union Station. In sparkling fresh paint, VIA 6400 and 6401, recently out of the GMD production plant in London, make there way into Union Station for the official unveiling. Behind the two units are a diner and Park Car which will be used to entertain invited guests.

A few hours of tolerating the very cold and windy day had been well worth it, with constant VIA traffic and a few CN freights. The sun was getting very low and with the clear sky, that magic golden colour began to take over. My first thought was " I really need an eastbound " and I'll wait until the sun totally sets. The railfan gods must have heard me, 'cause at the perfect time, CN 2328 East showed up. The golden glint, and the blowing snow during its passage made the frozen fingers all worthwhile.

The walk is short and the timing was perfect !! PCHR 110 on Trillium's Canal Job has just finished spotting a tankcar at a local customer. The great smells of the local chip truck and the fact it is lunch time, makes for an easy decision. While my conductor joins the line-up for some health food, I just had to shoot the scene. Yes, lunch was delicious at this railroad drive through !!

Having earlier brought in train 100 on her first venture east, CP 7010 will shortly be heading back west on the head-end of CP 101. The lines of these SD90MAC re-builds certainly do justice to the beautiful heritage paint scheme.

CP 7010 looks superb under the lights of CP's Vaughan Intermodal Terminal. The remote unit is already placed, and 7010's Cando crew is about to pull forward with the headend of 101. Next, they will back onto the remote, perform all the train and communication checks, pull the entire consist to the departure end of the yard and hand the train back to the waiting CP crew.

Westbound Turbo 61 is doing a great job of lifting the snow as she meets eastbound 44 at Trenton Junction. 44's FP9A 6539 has done a great job since leaving Toronto, and even with numerous stops and plenty of snow, she'll arrive Belleville " right on the advertised ".

Under beautiful August skies, the Hamilton bound Starlite awaits the light to enter the CN Oakville Sub. The train is just south of the Obico Yard on CP's Canpa Sub.

Busy time and a great array of power at Revelstoke. 651, a westbound sulpher train is cutting off the 5830 and it will head to the shop. With 5847 leading, 651 head to Kamloops following Via 1. With the Laggan and Mountain Subs behind her, 651 no longer needs the extra 3000 horses. While this is occurring, VIA 1 is being watered and serviced and quite likely, and number of passengers are stretching their legs and taking in this gorgeous mountain evening.

The air behind the leads units is thick with brake shoe smoke as CP Extra 5826 West descends the final stretch of "the big hill" into Field BC. 5826 is already just over 5 years old, but just like the rest of the motive power consist, she sure looks well cared for.

As the sun gets ready to set on a glorious western day, locomotive engineer Reg Avery climbs back aboard the lead unit of the Canadian. He and his fireman, who is just behind him have checked the running gear of the 3 trailing RS10's after the hot box detector at MP 30.8 broadcast an alarm. Everything checked okay, and the train was soon on its way to Medicine Hat.

Not long out of the paint shop, CP 1416 shines even under overcast skies, as she leads The Canadian out of Revelstoke BC. Awaiting the passage of No.2, 606,an empty sulpher train, will follow 2 east.

The clean-up continues after two CN movements collided head-on just to the west of Sunnyside Station. Luckily there were no fatalities, but CN did call in the CP big hook to assist. Looking back, it is amazing how you could pull over on the Gardiner Expressway, and even get that close to the action without being challenged. Oh how times have changed.
