About Paul O'Shell


Started my railroad career at CN in July 1969 and retired from the industry 49 years later on March 1, 2018. My area of expertise was railway Work Equipment. Reside in Kelowna, BC. I use a Nikon D850 full frame & Nikon D7200 (Nikkor 24-70mm, 24-120mm, 35mm, 18-140mm, 55-300mm, & 80-400mm) and scan with an Epson V550. Enjoy my contributions. Be safe. In this view from the cab of a piece of MOW equipment, HBRY's 30 m.p.h. main line to Churchill, MB is looking pretty good after a tie gang has rolled through and done its job. The lack of ballast, the tripod pole line, and the dwarfed landscape are very characteristic of this portion of the line. Make sure you packed a lunch because its a long way to anywhere from here! North of Gillam, between Amery and Charlebois, MB, the Hudson Bay Railway main line is not quite as pretty as your normal track structure. In this pic, crews are working hard to replace ties and tamp track to provide a safer and more comfortable ride for both passengers and cargo alike. The only way in or out of this portion of the line is by rail. The roads stop just outside of Gillam. The vegetation continues to get shorter, thinner, and more sparse as you get closer to Churchill. Cando's Barrie Collingwood Railway CCGX #1001 'Spirit of Collingwood' moves a cut of cars down the line near the railways maintenance shop outside of Utopia. It's nice to see a Geep with its high short hood still in place. David Wylie photo submitted with permission.

TRT 702 is fully rebuilt, freshly painted, and ready to begin service on the newly formed Tshiuetin Rail Transportation railway. 702 was coupled to TRT 701 and three refurbished coach cars in QNS&L's Sept-Iles, QC yard waiting for a call to duty on this dull October afternoon in 2005.

[editors note: this is a rarely seen Steam locomotive purchased for scrap but saved instead - accepted due to relative rarity] Built in 1928 at CP's Angus shops, CP 3101 and sister 3100 were the only two 4-8-4 Northerns ever built and owned by CP (while CN rostered more than 200 of these monsters). She was converted from coal fired to oil fired at CP's Ogden shop in 1956 a little more than a year before being retired from service. Nicely restored and sitting on display with a heavyweight coach and an old caboose, 3101 saw service from 1928 until October of 1957. Photo by David Wylie and submitted with permission.

QNS&L 64 is due for a little primer and paint as evidenced by this November 13, 2007 photo. The double exhaust stacked caboose was sitting on the van track at the car shop in Sept-Iles on this dreary and overcast day.

Cartier 23 stands on guard at the Port-Cartier locomotive shop on this dull and overcast November afternoon. While not new, the locomotive shows no signs of its hard use hsuling heavy ore trains.

Cartier 8273 RM-01 is a box car modified for road repair service on this remote mining railway. Equipped with all the tools and equipment needed for day or night 'away-from-shop' repairs, this car is ready to be dispatched on a moments notice.

CP 5734 pulls snow covered van CP 434614 past a crew of CP, Knox Kershaw, and NAES (Canada) Ltd. employees crawling around CP 5711-32, a new KSF940 snow fighter in the hole at Rogers. Due to the amount of snow in the area, there were 2 Jordan spreaders, 2 Russell wing snow plows, and two MOW snow fighters at Rogers when this photo was taken.

EMD GP38-2 CP 3084 rests in the afternoon sun outside the Revelstoke, BC car shop. The unit was only in town for a day before it was hauled away to duty. Even though it is mid-May, snow is still quite evident on the mountain slopes in the background.

This un-numbered stationary generator car was sitting outside the car/locomotive shop tethered by a number of power cables to an out-building which housed Cartier's Cowen-Sheldon 150 ton wrecking crane No. C-4. The car was built new in 11/59. I do not know if it was purpose built as a generator or if it was modified by Cartier for the purpose.

[editors note: accepted for rarity and remoteness of railway] Cartier's 'Hart Jaune' coach is looking splendid on this cool fall day in Port-Cartier. The sky-light window on the end of the car is an excellant way to maximize fore and aft vision while staying within Plate C clearance requirements.

CP 5876 and a trailing 5900 series unit are moving a double ended plow train westbound through Rogers, BC. There was a Russell wing snow plow and Jordan spreader on each end of the train for bi-direction snow clearing with plenty of power.

LLPX 6949 is coasting right along with a fully loaded coal train on this beautiful sunny day near Coronach, SK. Luscar Ltd. trains run on the company owned Poplar River Mine Railway and connects with CP in Coronach. What an interesting find on this July 23, 2008 afternoon in Churchill, MB. Somewhat imitating a VIA Rail paint scheme with its yellow & blue colours and stripes, this business car was devoid of any identification other than its AMTRAK certification No. 800576, and a stencil above the galley door reading 'Jonathan Wood Oklahoma City, Oklahoma'. Closer inspection of the car revealed it was last named 'Canadian Sunrise' which allowed me to trace it backwards as ex-NREX 'Royal Adventure', exx-CN 100 'Bonaventure', exxx-CN 90, exxxxx-CN 23. Grand Trunk Pacific business car #3410 'Nechako' is on display at the Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum in P.G., BC. This heavy weight business car was outfitted in grand style and no doubt carried a very select group of high level railroad officials in its day.

Except for the plywood on the windows and the wrapped exhaust stacks, this dead train looks like any other branchline movement. Made up of five ex-CN GMD-1 locomotives and a long string of flat and box cars, this train to nowhere sits in ONR's North Bay yard waiting for someone to come along and lease each unit for another chance at a second, or third, or fourth life.

Back in Black! The smell of fresh paint was everywhere on this sunny hot day at the Alberta Railway Museum. Ex-CN mechanical reefer (number unknown) was baking its new paint job as it sat in the yard surrounded by many other ex-CN pieces of equipment and power. This car was to eventually be painted in CN's 1950's olive green, black, and yellow stripe scheme.

BCR 6401 'The Northern Star' is an American model W-150 wrecking crane s/n W-3854. It was built new in 1969 for Pacific Great Eastern Railway and shipped to them in November of that year. Powered by a Detroit Diesel 8V-71, it produced 284 h.p. @ 2100 rpm. The crane is equipped with a 40 foot boom and 5 foot jib and has a self-propelled travel speed of 2-3 mph. After CN's acquisition of BC Rail, both the crane and boom idler/cabin car were shipped to a local scrap dealer and scheduled to be destroyed but a concerted effort by the PG Railway & Forestry Museum and a few other folks saved them from the torch and they are now on display at the museum. The crane was fully operational when it was taken out of service.
