About craigandru

Originally from Mississauga, I have lived in Barrie for the past five years. I've managed to photograph trains throughout a good portion of Ontario and, over the last few years, have been especially interested in shooting trains in Northern Ontario. As of now my equipment includes a Canon DSLR and a few different lenses.

ONT 308 crosses the Frederick House River with 2104 leading 27 cars. The covered gondolas are full of copper and zinc concentrate from the Kidd Mine.

GEXR 2303 and RLK 4095 lead a cut of 10 salt-filled hoppers as they are about the tackle the grade leading to the yard in Goderich.

TRRY 108 leads its train across Bridge 17 of the old Welland Canal. The lift bridge hasn't been operational since the early 1970s.

A SD40-2F in The Soo was the last thing I figured I'd find on this trip up north. But on this day, Canadian Pacific 9001 builds (and later leads) HCRY train 912 on the 179 mile journey to Sudbury. I guess the Huron Central was short on power and CP leased them this red barn.

The Tour of the Line train was running late on this day (shock and horror) so while I waited I talked with the station attendant. A very nice lady, she had worked out of Hawk Junction since the Algoma Central days. She missed working for the ACR (and also the Wisconsin Central) and the job had a different feel with since CN purchased the line. After about an hour the train finally arrived and I took a picture as it departed south. I often wonder what happened to the station lady after the train was discontinued. Too bad that the government helped axed this passenger service, the economic benefit to the northern communities served (estimated in the tens of millions of dollars each year) was a good return on their 2.2 million dollar annual subsidy.

A couple of matching engines lead a northbound CP freight over the French River. This 415 foot truss bridge was built in 1907 and set in place by a process known as incremental launching. Due to the deep water at the construction site, the entire structure was assembled on the north shore of the river and then launched across the span using a 32 horsepower Beatty hoisting engine.

With two red barns and a bluebird providing power, CP 222 is about to take the switch onto the Parry Sound sub and continue southwards towards Toronto.

After pulling a few loaded centrebeams out of the Tembec Sawmill, 1603 and sister unit 1601 push empties back into the plant for future loading.

It was nice seeing a SD40-2 leading this empty ore train away from Clarabelle Mill in Sudbury. 5968 and 5043 bring 47 cars onto the Cartier Sub at CP Sprecher to start their journey to the Coleman Mine in Levack.

Depot Harbour, one of Ontario's largest ghost towns, was originally founded in the 1890s by lumber baron John Rudolphus Booth as the western terminus of his Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway (OA&PS). At its peak the town had 1,600 permanent residents, along with a railway station and roundhouse, grain elevators, docks, hotels, stores and a church. in 1904 Booth sold the railway to the Grand Trunk and it was subsequently inherited by CN in 1923. After CN assumed control, they decided the roundhouse was not required in their network (with the facilities at South Parry so close nearby) and it was retired. The 1930s were not kind to the old OA&PS - grain prices fell during the depression, a damaged bridge in Algonquin closed the western section of the line and the reconstruction of the Welland Canal reduced the importance of the town and railway. By the end of the decade the town had fallen into disrepair and its population had plummeted.

I found out about Depot Harbour in 2012 while reading Ron Brown's book "Ontario's Ghost Town Heritage" and learned that while the town had long since vanished, parts of the old roundhouse (made of concrete) still remained. So the next time I visited the Parry Sound area I made a quick detour to Parry Island and took this picture.

The Levack Turn is in the process of leaving CP's Cartier Sub and heading down the Levack Spur towards Coleman Mine. There it will exchange its empty string of gondolas for cars loaded with nickel ore. Then the train will proceed back to the concentrator at Clarabelle Mill in Sudbury.

Three SD40-2 locomotives lead their train through downtown Nipigon. I had been waiting all morning for an eastbound (there's a neat bridge shot just outside of town) that never materialized so this was, at the time, a consolation prize. Nowadays, a train with power like this is something that I'd be chasing.

This was the best result I ever got from shooting the St Thomas & Eastern Railway. It seemed, to me, that the trains would head west in the morning and east in the afternoon making all my attempts backlit. Now on this fine summer day I had spent the morning and early afternoon following the OSR and later in the day decided to go over to Trillium's shops and take a photo of 1842, as it could often be found parked outside their office. But it wasn't there and, on a whim, I decided to drive to Delhi so I could see where the end of the line was. As I drove down Hwy 3 in Delhi, I looked down the track as I crossed over it and I saw the headlight of an engine east of me on the main. It's hard to explain to most people the kind of excitement I felt at this moment, but I'd hazard a guess that everyone on this site can understand why I quickly slammed on the brakes (subsequently needing to wave an apology to the driver behind me) in order to try and have a longer look. The next hour was spent waiting for the train to begin its journey back to Tillsonburg and then leapfrogging its slow trek home, photographing it at nearly every crossing between Delhi and Tillsonburg. And not only is it the best shot I could get of the ST&E, it was also the last, as I never made it out again before the railway shut down in 2013.
