This is the promised baggage car from the auxiliary train I posted a short while back. Checking my 1989 CTG, it is reported to have been built in 1950 by NSC. Here, 38 years later, it is looking immaculate. I don't know when it was converted to Aux. Gen/Comm car 57958, it was obviously enjoying life in its new role, as it is very well cared for (nice yellow trim). Checking my other posted photo and the roof line in this picture, that seems to be the diesel with generator at this end (flapper on exhaust). The other various vents and chimneys??? All the equipment, minus a coach, is on the way back home to Calder yard. Photo taken south of Gibbons at 9:15.

The crew of the 8800 are turning their units on the wye at Bretville Jct. After stopping, getting lined up and a light, they will proceed to Clover Bar yard. Waiting in the distance, on the other side of the river at Bailey, is a lumber train. After the lumber train departs, an IM from the Camrose Sub. arrives and continues to Walker yard. Within minutes, another east bound of empty hoppers on the Wainwright Sub. goes by. It was early on a Sunday and already it was shaping up to be a busy morning.

Here is a 31 and a half year contrast with Jason Noe's recent post of the 4784. In this photo, it has only in the last few weeks been renumbered. It's stablemate following is still waiting for the 47's. The units are looking very good for 15 years old. Also, as in Jason's picture, there is a GP9 helping out in the rear. A flatcar with wooden ramps heads up an otherwise solid train of empty hoppers.

Grain loads heading back to Edmonton on a cloudy Saturday morning. The 4330, 4350 and 4351 have 40 grain hoppers cruising at track speed as they come around the corner which will lead to the bustling hamlet of Coronado. The 3 units are numbered very close together, yet, only the one has spark arrestors. It seems having them is at the discretion of the fellow putting them back on after maintenance.

These 3 were working hard getting their loaded train up the hill from the Redwater river. The first few cars are work train cars and likely will be set out somewhere before arriving at Calder yard. Evening at the CN parking lot with the sun out was a great place for rail action.

I do not have many photos that show the doors open on the elevators, as well as able to see right through, as in this case. This is also one of the few pictures where I included the Redwater section shack in the photo. 584 is lead today by the 1077, 1069 and 1078, with cab 79836 bringing up the rear. The marks of unloading molten sulphur tanks in the early 80's into tank trucks is still very evident. The elevator track would have a number of tanks spotted for offloading on occasion. By 1983/84 this came to an end and the only sulphur traffic that remained was the bright yellow chips in the open hoppers passing by from Fort McMurray.

In the very last glow of the day, the Muskeg Mixed enters the curve to Kerensky where it will leave the Coronado Sub. and continue north on the Lac La Biche Sub. That is the 9192 trailing and the tailend cars consisted of Baggage 7856, Coach 5095 and CN caboose 79881. I see from my notes, this was shot at f/2 and 1/250th. Photo taken just after 20:00.

The 4602, 9105 and 9192 have the usual 35 loads in tow. 3 GP38's can bring 50 loads back to Edmonton. The train has just crested the hill up from the Redwater river. It will now slowly descend over the next few miles to cross the Sturgeon river just before arriving at Gibbons. IMO, the zebra painted ex-NAR units looked their best when working with b-units.

So many things in this photo look "oh so right". The track re-hab work is all finished, all 3 tracks look very nicely done. Hoppers parked at the elevators, the whole rail scene looks ready to roll. And roll it did. In a months time the elevators were toppled and the remnants being hauled away. The one saving bonus for those of us who lived in Redwater. Just a few years before, one of the early oil derricks was set up in town by the golf course. Town could still be seen miles away even though the grain elevators were gone.

For approximately a year, the Coronado Sub. enjoyed this little passenger train. It generally kept a good time and typically passed through the Redwater area between 12:30 and 13:00 on Mondays. On this Monday it consisted of baggage 7856, coach 5095 and caboose 79881. The baggage car was formerly owned and used by the NAR. Photo location is about 3.5 miles east of Coronado.

The bi-weekly grain extra was making a stop at the Redwater elevators on a sunny Fall day. The 5516, 5511 and 5592 almost have the cars at their mark as the engineer, with handset out the window, replies an affirmative "half a car". The 5516 looks to have been through the wash rack very recently. The lumber pile in the foreground did disappear over the next year or so. Many of the grade crossings were redone, making a number of them much smoother to negotiate.

This photo was taken by my Dad in the summer (July?) of 1963 (thank goodness for dates stamped on Kodak slides). The exact location is not firmly known. Hells Gate gives easy access to the tracks from the highway and there is a tunnel entrance located right there. Thus I feel fairly confident that this is the picture location. Looking on Google Earth, there doesn't seem to be any other points offering a Dad an easy route while he leaves the family in the car. The 9124 was built in Nov./52 and 3 years later (March/66) it will be involved in a rock slide wreck. Oddly enough, this wreck was only several miles north of here at Boothroyd. It was retired shortly afterwards.

With his arm stretched out, the hoghead is in the midst of rule 14l as 584 approaches a crossing west of Redwater. This was a very cool day, which seems appropriate for a Friday the 13th. You can see in the middle of the train a couple of the early style hoppers. Often wondered if there was a customer that requested them as they were frequently a part of the consist.

I heard the horn blowing at home and looked out the back window to see an abbreviated Edmonton Auxiliary going by. Hop in the car for some pictures and as this part of the train is coming, I spy these 3 guys sitting amongst the equipment. Had to catch a photo of this. Two in chairs and the one fellow laying on a table over top of the freight truck (you can see his bare arm and jeans). What are the chances today of seeing this sort of thing? On a beautiful day like that, I would have been out there with them enjoying the breeze. Don't know the reason why the auxiliary was called, they headed for somewhere in the Fort McMurray area. The lineup was the 4217 and 4603 up front, a flat car of snap track, coach 54957 (dozer accomodation), 57958 (auxiliary gen/comm), 54907 (flat with dozer)and 2 cabooses 79655 & 79692. They returned 4 days later, but minus coach 54957.

We passed this train about 10 minutes earlier and I pulled in at the Moose Lake rest area to wait and catch a photo. Both ourselves and the 5400 were headed for Jasper and after leaving the rest area, we enjoyed the fun of driving past it again. A common practice was having important carloads on the headend of the train for easy removal at some point. I wonder if the container car and reefer are to be plucked off by a waiting yard crew.

Trains to Fort McMurray this week were running way off their usual times. I believe the track was undergoing considerable upgrading, which brings about operational delays of some nature. The Muskeg Mixed usual return was in the early morning hours, during the night. Here it is coming home at 16:15, very late indeed. There were storms in the area, producing this interesting light. Just immediately west of here, the sky is blue with the sun out. Although I have clouds above me, the scene is being lit by the bright sky to the west. The late return has not put a frown on the brakeman. Photo taken a couple of miles west of Redwater. Please see neighbouring post for part-2.

The tailend cars to the Muskeg Mixed. Not only were trains running off time but equipment was being stick handled around. Coach 5099 and an old NAR caboose, now CN caboose 79101, should have been a part of these cars. Instead, the coach and caboose went up earlier in the week and are still there, doing whatever. Tonight we get caboose 79508 and baggage 7857. In the near future, baggage 7857 will go into the shops to have extended windows installed so it can run as a tailend car with no need for a caboose (what I would term a bagboose in my notes LOL). Just enough early morning sun peeking over the trees to light up the sides of the units. The crew has one more quick stop to make in Gibbons and then it is home to Calder yard. I love the first up flat sided CN hopper. Photo was taken a couple miles east of Coronado.

An early photo taken with my Canon TX on the west edge of Redwater. This is one of the few instances of my photographing a CN 4100. The vast majority of the units that came through town were the light branchline 42 and 4300 series loco's. As the 4111 will be renumbered to the 4370 in 1984, this helps confirm the date is 1983. Also, from the CNRHA, the 4370 will go for rebuilding into slug 233 in 1987.
