CN 3181 at 7:30 has, only minutes ago, departed Kinder Morgan with the new and improved version of a pipeline. This newer version is not restricted by being buried in the ground. It is portable and can be rolled to many rail destinations. The 2801 is helping out on the rear. The 3181 is still looking pretty fresh, just a few splatters along the bottom edges.

My only instance seeing one of these "Humpbacks" drive by. It is shoving on the rear of an oil train that, just a short while ago, departed the large Kinder Morgan rail loading facility. Have any of these ex-demo's been repainted yet? If not, so much the better, Blueberry paint and GECX initials add some nice variety.

Shoving cars from off the Wainwright Sub. so they then can be put into tracks on the other side of the berm behind the 7530. I believe these 2 units could have worked together as a hump set in the past (I have no knowledge if they actually did). The 7530 would be mother (by the aerials on the roof etc.), there would have been 2 slugs between them and the 7503 making up the other end. This would have been your typical sight at the east end of Calder yard during the 80's.

CN 5744 and CN 2453 are just leaving the outskirts of Edmonton at 8:30. It's a beautiful day to be heading out for Mirror, Alberta.

CP 8865 and CP 8511 at 8:00, have an enormous train (should have counted) of hoppers and tanks, although most were empty, on the way to Fort Saskatchewan. The conductor is up the track getting the switch to pass through a clear alley at CP Clover Bar yard.

Clover Bar day crew shoving a cut of cars into customers located north of the mainline. IC 3140 only came to visit for a short while last fall. Within a few weeks of arriving it departed to wherever.

Scona midnight job puttering back to the yard at 7:45. Another set of interesting units. The 9601 is your standard, lightweight frame, CN GP40-2L, in series 9400 to 9632. This is evident by the noticeable jog in frame height between the 2 units. The lighter frame allowing more sand and fuel. CN 9633 to 9667 and a handful of GO GP40-2's were built with standard frames, with the resulting decrease in fuel and sand. These units are GP40-2's with no L. All this frame info is according to Greg McDonnell's field guide. When checking roster sites on the web, many lump them all into the L designation. Now onto the 9671, which is a former GO unit and its GO number I am not sure of. It has the standard frame, which creates the jog as mentioned above. My curiosity is, does it still have 76mph gearing, the CNRHA lists it as such. Can't see it happening in yard service. The 9671 has the distinction of having pulled the American Orient Express across Canada twice.

I had this photo out a few days ago in preparation for posting but another took its place. After seeing James Knott's recent photo of the 4726 I concede defeat. :-) I thought the 7524 looks pretty rough around the edges, it actually still has a few things to learn after seeing the 4726. LOL. Great photo James. For those interested, this is the midnight Scona job coming home at 8:30, they are negotiating the east leg of the wye.

The conductor gives a wave as they wait for a light at the East Edmonton diamond. 4018's destination will be a storage yard located on the outskirts of Edmonton.

CN 5401 and GECX 7367 are on the way east at 8:10 with a train of tanks and hoppers. I'm happy to report that leased loco's are still a common sight in Edmonton.

No. 2 is a little over 6 hours late which then makes possible a photo of the train hustling away from Edmonton in the light of the dawn sky. Kootenay Park is bringing up the tailend today.

CP 8939, CEFX 1031 and CP 9771 are on the way to Fort Saskatchewan with a very long train cars for the many plant sites located there. CP 8939 has a large Strathcona's crest on the nose, which seems appropriate enough as most of its day will be spent in Strathcona county.

When stopping in at Clover Bar on this morning, I happened to find CN 5277 and 5264 sitting on the lead from the Wainwright Sub. to Clover Bar yard with a train of loaded hoppers. As I walked to a spot to take a photo, I noticed these containers coming on the passing train. Quickly getting myself re-positioned, I caught this odd picture. The SD's must feel that they are close to "seeing it all" with PINK containers going by.

Their wait almost over, in a few minutes CN 2023, 5489 and 5691 will continue on to Walker yard with a train of loaded grain hoppers. Photo taken at the East Edmonton siding (7:30).
