Spring of 1988, a time of much change on the Coronado. Combo's like this were not uncommon at the beginning of 88 , there were also a number of instances with a GP38 and a beetle B unit. The first big change came in May with the renumbering of the GP38's into the 47 and 4800's. I caught my last, the 5529, on October the 11th. Next, starting in summer, F unit and GP9 number's started to dwindle. Summer of 89 there were no F units left and any GP9's remaining in service only trailed. The older GP9's quite often helped with their newly re-built replacements, the 4000 and 4100's. In just over a year, many of the familiars went through some sort of cosmetic surgery or were gone for good. Even the roadbed was getting an update. The sub-grade has been dumped and leveled into place. Next will come what seemed like an endless chain of ballast cars. In the end, the whole tracked must have been raised several inches. Looked great! Photo taken at mile 24.4 at 14:30.

The fuel train was on the way home from the air base at Cold Lake, making a quick stop at 14:00 in Redwater. The loads will be gathered and in just a few minutes couple back onto the train and then off to Gibbons to do the same there. After that, it will be yard the train in Edmonton and put the units on the shop track. Reading my notes, this was a busy day in Redwater, 4 different trains in 1 day.

Nice clear morning to go and take a shot of the LRT coming down from the Davies elevated station. The station is well above the ground. Going south, the LRT has to pass over Argyll road (4 lanes), then the CP tracks and finally 75th street (4 lanes), before returning to ground level. I would love to catch an early morning shot with the LRT right up on the bridge. As can be seen, there are nasty fences and higher up the fence changes to concrete. Leaving the bottom 3rd obliterated, darn. This photo was taken at the north end of the bridge.

For most eastern folks, CN 4414 (or any of the heavy GP9's) is/was something all to familiar. In Redwater AB, it was an oddity. In just over a week it made 3 round trips through town. In this photo (trip No.3), the cab hop was made into a train by picking up 5 empty hoppers out of the Egremont siding. The cab has been tacked back on and it's off to somewhere north for 4 days.

The 4645 and 4617 slip past Clover Bar as they take a train of containers into Edmonton. Time was 7:45 on a sunny June morning.

It was June 1989 and happily the unit train still looked much like it had for many years. The re-built units, the 4006 and 4004 on this occassion, blend right in with the older 4332. The older units rarely ran first up anymore, this being the usual setup, old timers in the middle. This train returned early Wednesday at 5:20 with the 4004 leading and 35 loads of sulphur.

Great fall afternoon to be out taking a few photos. This was an empty unit train, approx. 50 cars, with a smooth and short sided hopper neatly placed in the middle. The 4331 will head north to the Lac La Biche Sub. at Kerensky, a half mile or so past where I was standing. Keeping the theme from my other captions lately, notice the road bed, so neat and tidy. Pretty sure all the crews were enjoying it. Time of photo, 16:40, cab 79694 on the end.

The recent posting of the former NAR 302 (CN 1079) from August 20/2023 at the Alberta Railway Museum made a person have a look through the photos. The 1079 made only a handful of trips through Redwater during my time on the Coronado Sub. In this photo the, crew was building a train in the Egremont siding from empty covered hoppers stored on the abandoned portion of the LacLaBiche Sub. It is nice knowing that the 1079 (302) is still being admired and cared for all these years later.

My reason for this picture was inspired by Ian Malenfant-Picard's recent posting of CN 4715 (05/11/2025, search photo 58127). With over 36.5 years between the 2 photos, although the 4715 still looks very much the same, there are a number of small differences. If you look back through my postings, I have taken a number of pictures at this location. But, none look like this. The track has been groomed to perfection. Trains were rolling by so very smoothly, even on the elevator track. As I have mentioned in my other captions, as great as this looked, by November of the same year, the grain elevators were torn down. By early 90's, no more speeders parked in the siding. Replaced by hi-rail trucks. GP38's by this time became the dominant power. In just 5 years (87/92), the face of railroading on this branchline went through quite a change.

A unit train was just entering the connecting track which will take the empties across Hwy.28 and then connect to the Lac La Biche Sub. From there it is still a long trip north to Waterways. The siding at Kerensky was all a buzz with activity. The 3 tracks (main, siding & elevator) in Redwater were being fluffed and folded, plus the main track from Redwater to Kerensky was receiving the same treatment (new ballast and ties, then leveled). Cab 79420 on the tail end.

Sunday after lunch at the Calder diesel shop finds this varied display of GMD engines. The west tower job at the right was pulling a string of cars with a bi-level of VW's next to the 1268. Also of interest, I stopped in at the east tower before coming here. Parked in a stub track there were 4 superintendent cars, the 61202,61201,61200 and 70067.

Nice sunny weather the morning before when this unit train went north as the 9171, 9190 & 9167. Ditto the weather at 18:30 the next day as it returned home. It made photographing the f units a delight. It had 36 sulphur loads coming around the bend to the hamlet of Coronado. On the tail end next to caboose 79286 was a scale test car (number unknown).

A seemingly endless train of tanks waiting at Bretville Jct. for traffic to clear on the Wainwright Sub. Approx. an hour and a half later they were given the okay and a light to proceed to Walker yard.

There were 4 trains every week on the Coronado at this time. Peddling grain cars and bringing the loads back to Edmonton. 2 of those 4 would also have fuel tanks in the consist (destined for the cold lake air base). It looks to be a solid train of grain loads, but, it is possible that the front few CN hoppers may have had a different purpose. The late 80's was the last hurrah for GMD-1's on the Coronado Sub. GP9's also. By 1990, the GP38-2's owned the rail, on occasion, a GP-9 would trail as a helper, never leading. This did not last long either. The 1070 at the rear seems to have its CN noodle on the long hood painted just a little lower than the others. Photo taken at mile 26.6 on Saturday, just after lunch.

I was watching this crew for a short while as they made their train ready to go. Once they were tied on and had air, this was the result. It was full speed ahead as they left the yard. Like on the cartoons where there is a flurry of heel prints flying behind the character. I'm guessing a customer had been waiting for cars to be spotted. The train was a fair number of cars (30 to 40 range), plus a yard cab at the end. Photo taken at Scotford yard at 13:00.

A short train returning to Edmonton at 10:30 on a clear Saturday morning. The empty sailboat in the middle of the train will have had farm machinery as a load. That was the 9173 trailing. This photo taken with Ektachrome 200asa film, an infrequent stray away from Kodachrome.

First day of summer holidays and on the lookout to catch those somewhat new SD50F's in action. Trouble is, it's pouring rain and I'm standing with my coat over my head as the train passes over a bridge right next to the McMurphy rest area.

The snow dust swirling down by the hoppers shows the engineer has some speed on the train. As soon as the units have crossed the trestle, the hill up to Redwater starts. The grain extra has 31 loaded cars in tow and will pickup 3 more in Redwater, a nice sized train for these 3 units.

Back when signs and posts were a serious matter. The girth on the post, cars will likely bounce off of it. Plus, the bold "Railway Crossing" printed on the sign. There were 2 signs with big posts in the Redwater area, this one just west of town and another down by the river and trestle. Also, a bonus back at this time, was having these little buggies full of men go zipping by on occasion. Sadly, the posts and signs were replaced shortly after this photo was taken (The standard reflectorized sign with red trim lines) and the speeders left just a few years later.

Last day of this fantastic sunny weather Edmonton has been having all week. Took off on the mountain bike to see what else ETS might offer up. The last photo went over lukewarm, maybe this will do better. My last stop for photos was here, the Avonmore station. I'm pretty happy, the lead car is the 2025, fits the year nicely. The reason I posted another? Check the roof on the station, didn't notice that until I loaded this picture up at home. That brought a smile and a laugh to my face.
