As 836 arrives in Redwater to switch the culvert plant, first up on the train is an unusual car in the form of C.R.C.S. 2. The initials are for Colonist Railcar Society. From the 1987 CTG, this sleeper came from the CPR (named Tracy) and was built in 1931. A quick look turned up that at one time, it seems, there was an effort to restore some of these colonist cars. Not exactly sure what happened over the next several years from this date to #2. There is a photo of it from 2011 at Stettler Alberta on the Alberta Prairie Railway, in CNR green, black and gold, but, wearing it's old CPR name Tracy. A very nice combination. In this photo, the units have picked up the empty gon at the culvert plant and are now pulling the train towards Redwater. Going to Redwater was all #2 got for an outing. The crew parked her in the siding and when returning at lunch the next day from eastern Alberta, the sleeper was taken back to Edmonton.

836 was a unit train of fuel tanks on this day, 14 in total. Caboose 79505 on the tail end. The train is passing the new mile 34 signpost. The ditch re-hab worked out great, everything is much tidier and the power poles have all been removed. Perfect for later in the day photo's. The beetle in behind is the 9102.

When returning from eastern Alberta, the grain extra at Kerensky would have to make a stop to get the south connecting track switch and then line it back to normal after having passed it. Not certain exactly when, but, shortly after this photo time, a spring switch was installed so that returning trains from the Coronado could trail through the switch without stopping. In this photo, the tailend brakeman has only moments before given the signal that the switch is lined and the engineman is slowly getting the train of grain on the move as it negotiates the big curve that will take it south and down to cross the Redwater river.

Before returning back to Redwater on a visit to Edmonton, I took a quick look at the CP South Ed. diesel shops and found this. I am putting this photo in connection with Jacob's Agincourt Diesel Shop post from Jan/88. He mentioned the ATSF 3600, which brought me to this picture from the summer of 1987. The 3600 is paired with CP 3101. Behind are another pair the 3012 with an unknown GP38. To the left is CP 1564. SF 3600 has the name Argentine placed between the F and the 62/15 on the side of the frame. If there is a favourable way to have cars parked in front of the units, I hope this is it. :^)

A unit train of 55 empty hoppers had just passed through Egremont on the way north to pickup 35 loads. One of the more unusual ABA sets with a short nosed GP9 at each end. Cab 79258 at the rear, time was 8:00.

Only a moderate train of hoppers keeps these 2 units working, but not hard, up the hill from the river. I am almost at the same spot as my last photo, on the other side of the tracks this time with the sun in the west sky. By this date, flags were no longer used, sometimes the class lights would be lit. On the happy side, all the doors are closed.

The engineer is keeping his eye on the headend brakeman as they spot hoppers at the Redwater elevators. That will be the 4232 to the left. It is just after 11:00 and it was another beautiful Fall day. A few days after this, the 9173 will lead the 5513, bringing loaded hoppers home in the evening.

Another gull wing cab to go with Kevin Flood's recent CN 2157. The 2167 is about to cross the CP at the East Edmonton diamond. It was early in the morning and the trip from Mirror almost over, the crew hopefully in bed before the sun gets to high.

Roster shot of CN Rail Car 176-16. This photo shows clearly the "cutting wheel" used in wintertime, as mentioned by Paul O'shell in a past comment column. You can also plainly see the handbrake has been applied by the brake pads pressed up against the wheels. For those who did not have a scanner back then, that speaker on the back of the speeder was a great source as to what and when things may be about to happen.

An early mid October morning finds a unit train entering the south end of the connecting track, which is located next to the Kerensky siding. The Coronado sub. can be seen continuing east beside the units. It was a beautiful morning waiting for the train to arrive, and the engineer, with windows wide open, gives clear indication as to how nice it was. What seems like a lot of power, is actually the work extra, hitching a ride to whichever siding the equipment is parked at. The end 2 units, the 4216 and 5504, will be left there along with a caboose.

The chase is on in this photo. Grabbing a couple more shots of this consist before the highway crosses the tracks and the sun will be on the wrong side. Photo taken north of Egremont at 8:30.

The 7526 is headed to pull out some tanks north of the main and bring them back over to Clover Bar yard. The missing marker lamp panel looks like it would be a good place for birds to nest. Plus, the 7526 is still paired with it's slug the 526.

GMD-1's with dandruff :^). The grain extra has just finished picking up 4 hoppers from the elevators in Redwater and now has all 35 loads rolling for Gibbons. Looking at my notes, I shot this at f8 and 1/125, surprised there is no blur in the picture. This photo taken at the Burger Baron crossing (main street) in Redwater at 10:55.

Here is a first for people who like them. The new street level LRT has been testing for a few months now. I'm a little surprised no one has caught this already. It's a short walk from my house and I went to the tracks on this sunny day to grab some shots. Edmonton drivers are not used to turning right and having a train, which has the right of way, going through the intersection. The LRT wins every time and this has happened several times already. Besides the accidents, I'm amazed it is running, this project has been delayed for 2 or more years with repeated delays and setbacks. The last was a very large number of cracked piers on the Argyll road overpass (and beyond) that had to be fixed up. It's testing now and go right on ahead and give this photo the half star it deserves. :^)

A late 50's photo of the Vancouver station to contrast with Paul O'Shells recent station picture. I believe, needs confirmation, that some kind of Royal visit had already happened or was going to happen. It certainly is well flagged. A space of 60 plus years between photos.

The grain extra has some additional help on this sunny day with the beetle 9105 spliced between the 5607 and 5580. Amazing weather for the time of year, the winter of 87/88 had little snow. I can remember seeing people out on the golf course during Christmas week. This photo taken at mile 25.5, time approx. 15:30.

A short Muskeg Mixed makes it easy to frame fit. :^) The units are fresh and crispy tonight. Looking into my notes, the 5517 I first spotted in stripes Sept.86 and the 5503 with hers in March 87. Lucky chance to have them both headed in the same direction. That is Baggage 7856, Coach 5095 and Caboose 79881 at the rear. It is just a short distance to the connecting track where the Lac La Biche Sub. will take the mixed train north.
