Returning home with a handful of grain hoppers, the 4214 will be up the hill to Redwater in short order. In less than an hour it will be at the Jct. switch to the Vegreville Sub. and the outskirts of Edmonton.

The 4343, in just a few more car lengths, will leave the Coronado Sub. and take the connecting track to the Lac La Biche Sub. It will continue north with the 25+ ballast hoppers to the point where the line re-hab work is being done. The track in the foreground is the Kerensky siding. Quite often during the summer months it is stuffed with various types of track equipment etc.

Photo of a CN express train in the Thompson river canyon about 7km north of Lytton BC. A small piece of the river can be seen in the lower right and the CP tracks in the lower left. The 5348 is being helped by the 5180 and 5079. Picture taken at the end of June.

A train of approx. 30 sulphur empties is approaching the connecting track at Kerensky. The consist is made up of deadhead units. Only the 4782, 4733 and 4702 were throttled up. The 4806, 4807 and 4803 were just idling as they went by. To match the extra units, an extra caboose 79624 was with the 79675 on the tailend. Both trains will return in about 24 hours time, each bringing 50 loads home. Of note, the 4733 was a rare visitor on the Coronado Sub.

A work train was parked on the Redwater elevator track for a couple weeks in 1987. Rehab work was being done on the track north of town. Couldn't resist taking a photo of this old box converted to a Heat and Office Supply car. The heat part makes sense with the neighbouring bunk cars, the office supply leaves me scratching my head. Maybe there is a lot of paper work to do when upgrading track. It's the upright brake wheel that gets a 10 out of 10 on my list. :-)

CN 5484 and standard cab 2134 are setting out tailend cars into Clover Bar yard and when done will head south to Mirror. A quick search shows that the SD60's are still around in 2020, but, many of these photos are in America. I did find a few pictures of them in Vancouver. Having been recently repainted by CN, they look pretty good for their age.

I was having a look through the slide collection and found this beauty. I previously posted a photo of GMD-1's pulling a long string of grain boxes up this hill. The boxes here are lead by the 4607 (still in NAR paint) and the 4267. They are hauling a somewhat longer train. The units have gone 10 to 15 car lengths past me and there is no sign of the caboose way down at the corner in the photo. In my GMD-1 picture, the caboose had entered that far corner by this time. Doing a quick measure on Google Earth, there is approx. 1.3km of box cars in this photo. That's a lot of peddling the boys will be doing tonight. Time of photo is early evening.

This cut of tank cars was backed out of Clover Bar yard, through the crossover and onto the Wainwright mainline. The 9482 came to a stop when it cleared the signal seen just behind the cab in this photo. The cars are being delivered to a customer north of the mainline. This is the result when the light to go ahead came. I love the reaction by the 1438.

A quick photo out the front window as we head north into the curve that leads to the diamond with the CPR. I cannot remember any particulars about this speeder except that it was yellow, which makes me think it may have been ex-CPR. It was certainly a rough ride, the only rail equipment I recall that had a bumpier ride were the trackmobiles we used at the ESSO Chemical (Beamer) plant.

Unit train traveling south at mile 89 of the Camrose Sub. With only 5 miles left to Mirror yard, the crew will be anticipating a short rest before heading back home to Edmonton.

Gliding downgrade from the town of Redwater, empty sulphur buggies are headed north to be refilled. Once the units have passed over the trestle, which is immediately to photo left, the throttle will be upped a few notches to climb the hill to Kerensky. At Kerensky, they will leave the Coronado Sub., taking the connecting track to the Lac La Biche Sub. and the distant destination of Waterways. It will return 2 evenings later with nearly 50 loads and the 4602 added in for extra help.

A photo not to be admired for its beauty, heavy overcast and almost 20:00, the units were in heavy shadow. Thus, a little photo work was required to bring out the subject. What is shown in the photo and I saw several times going to and from Jasper is this typical use of the F unit "beetles". With 2 trains meeting just east of Edson, both making use of these B units, all in one frame. The consist on the left is made up of 5093, 5000, 9106 and 5335. The right has the 5418, SD50F and F7Aum, (cannot make out the unit numbers).

A late return home for the Muskeg Mixed finds it passing through the hamlet of Coronado at 13:30 rather than the dark hours in the middle of the night. The comboose is ex-NAR and has a history that goes back to the turn of the previous century (18 to 1900's). Up front the consist was made up of the 4319, 9172 and 4285.

I had a little fun with CN - CP in the same photo this morning. This is the Fort Sask. switcher finally on the move after waiting for a couple of CN trains to clear the diamond at Clover Bar. I have not been at the tracks for a few weeks and what a difference today. 6 trains, all in good morning light, in an hour and half. I have not seen this much action in awhile. I must thank M. Berry for his recent comment that they are bringing CN GE barns back into service. It got me thinking, if it is busy there (Quebec) it could be busy again here, it is. :-)

I stopped in at the downtown city yard on a Saturday morning knowing that the majority of crews here have the weekend off. I surely expected to find several switch engines and that was certainly the case. This is the west leads goat parked in its usual spot by the yard office which is just out of the picture to the right. They will be one of the few jobs working today. The usual routine for them will be switching the yard until around lunch and then after lunch take a transfer to the NAR and bring one back for interchange with the CPR. The CP yard at that time is behind me in this picture (south side 104th ave.). The only thing today remaining of both railroads in downtown is the CN tower, which even that is no longer owned by CN. Behind the black Procor tank, parked on the shop track, the 1263, 1264, 1291 and 1507 are idling and waiting for their next call to duty. During my time at CN, the typical goats at the city yard will have been a thirteen hundred for the west lead and on the shop track there will have been the 7100 number series SW8's with the occasional SW900 in the 7200 series. Checking the CNRHA, the 1508 only has 5 years to go from this date before retirement and it seems there was no second life for this unit.

This is a scene that I have not seen trackside in several years. One fellow pounding in spikes that have lifted, the other tightening the bolts on rail joints. Plus a little flat car in tow with a rail jack as a load. Same speeder as the one that I just posted a while back and I still cannot make out the number (for those who may inquire).

The grain extra has just passed through Redwater and will make a quick stop in Gibbons to pickup a string of empty flats. This will be the last bit of work they will do, Edmonton is only a short distance away. By this late in the 1988 summer, having pure GP9's for power was becoming uncommon. The GP38's had become the goto unit for heading up trains.

Looking through the collection today and I found this speeder to go with the other recent posts of these little track motor cars. This older style is the one that I am most familiar with. It is chasing behind a work train of sidedumps about a half mile ahead of it. The speaker on the cab top was real handy for listening to what, if any, rail traffic was in the area. It helped to plan where to go. Quite often, in downtown Redwater, as the section men brought the speeders out onto the track in the morning, you could do a little eavesdropping.

The eastbound they were waiting for has now passed. Next is to have the route lined up plus a light to proceed and the 5277 with a train of open top hoppers will leave Clover Bar behind.
