Things have changed since this picture. Big red smoke stack is gone, the little SW's are gone, more of the round house has been removed. Just the part with doors open remains. No more rail liners. The 5531 is retired and sold (2000??) to another road. By how much of the main yard has been removed, it cannot be much longer until CP vacates the property. The Whyte avenue area has been waiting a long time for this to happen. Photo taken with a little 110 pocket camera.

First thing in the morning finds a unit train of empties on the way north to exchange them for loaded hoppers. As far north as this train would go, the there and back time was not that long typically. Like this day, most unit trains would head out between 7:00 and 8:00 and return the next day anywhere from 16:00 to 20:00. Photo taken just north of Egremont with storm clouds already making an appearance in the west.

The crew for 584 had finished spotting cars at the elevators in Redwater and were headed to the mainline to couple back onto the train and continue the trip east.

A short unit train of sulphur was passing the north switches to the siding and elevator tracks at Gibbons. For trains heading home, Gibbons was the last town you passed through. In a half hour or so, Edmonton will have become the dominant feature on the horizon. Now for something completely different, (for those that like numbers). Total the numbers on the lead unit, 4+6+0+2=12, do the same for the other 2. You end up with 12, 13 and 14. Seems these units were in their natural order. :-)

An extra going back to Edmonton with a few loads of grain and some empty tanks. Photo taken at mile 12.7 just south of Gibbons. The train was ascending the last of the hill up from the Sturgeon river. The valley can be seen to the left of the hoppers. In less than a 1/2 mile, the track straightens out and goes directly south to the junction switch.

My first photo of the 70067 does not show the blunt end of this car very well. It is a little blunt looking, for sure, on the other hand, there will be more living space inside. Myself, I like the style of the 61202 superintendent cars. A porch at each end so you can have a chair out the back, no matter which way you are going.

Another photo from May/88 showing the amount of work being done on the track. A lot of ties to be replaced in this scene, a lot of those old ties ended up on our golf course. Tee boxes, shoring up bunkers, etc. This picture shows the grain extra returning to Edmonton with a train of hoppers nowhere near big enough to need 4 engines. The unit at the very back is the 1002, which I believe, had spent recent time working on the west coast. Possibly it had come to Edmonton for repairs and was out on on a test run before heading back. Photo time was 14:45.

584 had just pulled up clear of the main road through town, cut off 2 cars from the train of grain hoppers and are now bringing those cars to the east end of the elevators for spotting. All loads will be shoved to the west end of the elevator track and empties then spotted where needed. The loads will be an easy grab when they return home the next day. The less than perfect sun works well with the black paint, details are easily seen. For myself, the standard cab GP38's looked their best when wearing the noodle scheme. Photo taken at 11:00.

Although there is fresh ballast on the track and ballast hoppers in the train, the two are not connected. The crew of the 5606 will have stopped wherever the work was being done on the Lac La Biche Sub. and picked up the 15+ empty ballast cars to bring back to Edmonton. The ballast on the track was applied by the work train that had been working in our area for the previous couple of weeks. The whole route to Fort Mac was getting a major upgrade. Behind the empty ballast cars there were 35 loads of sulphur and cab 79511. Photo taken at mile 26.6.

The noodle scheme on a GP9 in the mid-eighties was a tough catch on the Coronado. Plenty of GP38's went by with this paint job, I only saw and photographed 2 GP9's. In May of 1985 the 4368 passed through town and then this photo of the 4283 from 1986. On this day, the 4283 and 4343 were making good speed hauling 25+ grain loads as the train came around the corner at mile 24 that leads to Coronado. It looks like a few wind drifts of snow were driven through on the way home. Cab 79836 on the end, photo time was 11:30.

The fuel train was zipping right through town, no meet or stop on this day. A few interesting cars lead the 12+ tanks. 2 gondola loads of pipe for the oil field and a flat car of ties. Cab 79836 at the end, photo time 10:45.

The Muskeg mixed, with an almost solid train of empty hoppers, is just north of Duagh at mile 4.7. This is one of the few spots on the Coronado where you can take a reasonable photo of longer trains. The coaches can sort of be seen at the back in this photo, no red caboose for sure. Nice combo of numbers for the units. No mistaking spring in Alberta, brown grass everywhere. The tail end brakeman was about to give, "that'll do", over the radio. The mixed train was making a stop in Redwater on this evening. There was 35 boy cubs taking a ride from Edmonton to here. In a few minutes, the parking lot was a buzz of excitement as they all de-trained, loudly talking about their ride. In another 15 minutes, all was quiet as they headed back home to Edmonton. What kid doesn't like a train ride? :^) Photo taken at 20:00. Talked with the tail end brakeman for a few minutes afterwards, he was just as revved up as the kids.

A unit train of sulphur had just come from the Lac La Biche sub with a few loads of lumber on the head end and some loaded grain boxes on the tail end. 30+ hoppers of golden yellow nuggets made up the middle portion of the train. A very typical use of those beetles, with it facing the right direction for a photo. The 4602 is at the rear of this ABA consist. Unusual having a unit train bringing lumber cars home, the Muskeg Mixed generally handled those cars.

An IM with CN 5652 leading had an interesting helper. A shortage in power brings paint schemes to places you would rarely, if ever, see them. I was happy to add a warbonnet into my collection, even if it was a little weathered and rusty. The sun visor even had large rust spots. For that matter, the only things that looked new were the snubber shocks on the axles and the hoses between units. Loco's in this state seem to tell more of a story than a freshly painted and re-built unit.

For me at the time, this felt like a great day. A GP38 still in the original noodle scheme and a full sized consist of passenger equipment. With an ex-NAR cab on the tail end. Terrific stuff. For those interested, starting with the lead car, baggage's 7855 and 7856, coaches 4977 and 5099, Cab 79101 at the end. Photo taken at mile 24.4 at lunchtime.

Beautiful sunny day today, why not take some LRT photo's. The tracks are only a couple of blocks away. The particulars, taken at 14:50 with a manual focus Nikon type C 85mm F1.8 non AI (converted by Nikon to AI) H-C auto lens mounted on a D810 (ISO 200, f/8 @ 1/640th). Yeah, I kinda like the "set it and forget it" with the focus, feels like past times with my Canon AE-1 program. :^)

Extra 1069 was rounding the corner at mile 24.4 with a train of grain hoppers as it returns back to Edmonton. Interesting grouping of the units, CN's at each end, ex-NAR's in the middle.

Could not resist this opportunity. My alias at the moment is Extra 5610 west, the 4810 (ex5610) was just posted earlier today, well, here is a 5610 to finish off a threesome. (39 years between the 2 photo's) :^) This string of units had sulphur empties in tow and were at the north end of the connecting track near Egremont. Time 8:00 on a grey/light sun morning.

The date stamp on the Kodachrome reads Jul 62. Mr. Homes will only have just set the 6060 up on it's viewing platform in Jasper. It will be another 10 years before the 6060 is freed to the rails and allowed to roam them once more. A couple of master mechanics are checking out the running gear :^), from our summer of 62 vacation.
