During the summer of 1994, the new CN St. Clair Tunnel is seen under construction, while the old tunnel to the left was still in use under the St. Clair River. The new tunnel officially opened a year later and was later renamed the Paul M. Tellier Tunnel in 2004 for the former CN president and chief executive officer.

CP C424 4210, CP SD40-2 5422 and GATX SD40-2 7367 lead a train through Bayview Junction in Burlington exercising trackage rights on CN's Oakville Subdivision as it heads to home rails on the Hamilton Subdivision then eventually south to Niagara Falls.

Former TH&B 51 (Sold to OSR in 1993) and CP RS18u 1824 were just two of the many displays at the Railway Day’s event in St. Thomas on August 29, 1993.

CN SW1200RS 1374 in it's newly applied CNNA colors switches Brantford yard on a quiet Sunday morning in 1993. I remember this well, as it was my first visit to Brantford to observe trains. My notes don't indicate it, however I remember 1374 later departing the yard and with cars followed by many many train horns, as it probably headed to Burford on what remained of the Burford Spur. I hadn't yet realized that line existed yet unfortunately as my dad and I were slowly just getting familiar with railfanning and the mainline was where our attention was.

From my notes that day; CN 4129, 9565 and 9566 were also assigned to Brantford in the yard as well as cabooses 79770 and 79713. CN train 419 later came through with 5290/ 5109 and Windsor-bound 381 had 3510, EMD Leasing 772, which was ex-Conrail and 2101.

CN Track Evaluation RDC 1501 is slowly testing the Huron Park Spur at Queen Street in Kitchener on a foggy afternoon, after waiting for CN L540 to clear the spur. Later that afternoon, 1501 would proceed eastbound to Guelph, where it would tie-up for the night, with more testing to follow on the Guelph North and Fergus Spurs the following day.

CN SW1200RS 1348 in it's new CN colours is sitting in Kitchener, Ontario on the evening of May 13, 1993. This was the last SW1200RS I ever saw assigned to Kitchener.

On Christmas Eve Day the sun briefly comes out as CN train L540 with GP38-2(W)’s 4777 and 4781 heads by the Kitchener station as they make their way to the Huron Park Spur and the interchange with Canadian Pacific.

A Saturday morning in 1993 finds CN’s Stuart Street yard shop tracks full of units awaiting their next assignments. The units included from left to right were; SW1200RM’s 7103, 7104, 7307, 7314, GP9RM’s 4127, 4136, 4101, SD40-2(W)’s 5299 and 5310. Also, around the shop facility that day were SW1200RS’s 1355, 1369 and 1375. As well, SW1200RS’s 1359 and 1360 were observed switching the yard. I also have in my notes that there were five active CN cabooses around the yard; 79648, 79853, 79473, 79783 and 79482.

CN GMD1u 1444 has just returned from Guelph with a GMTX GP38-2 on L540 and is viewed near the CN Operations Centre in the Kitchener yard.

On CN's second day back operating on the Guelph Subdivision, CN L540 is viewed switching the east end of the Kitchener yard with GMTX 2279, GMTX 2284, GTW 4929 and GMTX 2323.

Canadian Pacific train 511 is climbing the grade on the Windsor Subdivision as it heads westbound out of London approaching the Sarnia Road overpass. Powering the train are SD40-2 5574 and I&M Rail Link (IMRL) SD40 232. This westbound was the third to depart Quebec Street on the Windsor Subdivision that afternoon, as it eventually would follow 509 and 503 to Windsor.

An eastbound train with SD40 5564 waits to depart Canadian Pacific's Quebec Street yard in London as a westbound train has just finished it's journey on the Galt Subdivision with SD40-2's 5585 and 5485. SD40 5564 was retired in 2001 and eventually sold for scrap while 5585 was retired in March 2008 and sold for scrap a year later as well.

SD40-2 5485 started life as Southern before becoming Norfolk Southern 3254 then to GATX 3254, eventually
being acquired by CP during 1992 and renumbered to CP 3254. Earlier in 1997, the unit was renumbered to CP 5485. CP retired the unit in 2003 and it was later sold to NRE in Mount Vernon, Illinois in 2004 becoming NREX 5485. Just over a year later in 2005, the unit was involved in a wreck in Momence, Illinois and was retired due to damage it received.

More than twenty years ago during a much simpler time and prior to the creation of the light rail network, Waterloo-St. Jacobs Railway (WSJR) 6508 leads a northbound excursion through Waterloo Park on the CN Waterloo Spur.

The WSJR was a heritage/tourist railway that operated between Waterloo and St. Jacobs, Ontario from 1997 to 1999 on the CN Waterloo Spur utilizing FP9u's 6508 and 6520. The railway had ceased operations during 2000 citing rising maintenance expenses that deemed the operation no longer profitable.

The Goderich-Exeter Railway ceased operating on the Guelph Subdivision and related spurs on November 15, 2018. The next day CN regained control of the lines and picked-up where GEXR had left off, just as they had done 20 years prior. In turn, GEXR would continue their operations on the Goderich Subdivision and Exeter Spur out of Stratford. While the final days of GEXR on the Guelph Subdivision marked last runs for all their local assignments and road trains 431 and 432, there was also extensive coverage that followed on this site as well as other social media sites.
Unfortunately, I had just started a new job which meant I had no extra time to photograph the final days of GEXR. That combined with the time change and a large snowstorm meant I had a no “last run” or “this is it” kind of ending. The last 431 I had photographed was a week earlier.
In comparison, during November 1998, several of us watched on the station platform as the final CN 431 stormed out of Kitchener with two SD40-2(W)’s. It was a fitting send off just hours before the original GEXR take over. That time around it was more of an end of an era type of feeling.
Throughout 2018 I photographed GEXR operations quite extensively and had plenty of material to go through and edit over the course of the following year. It wasn’t until I hovered over a few photos I had taken just prior to the changeover that I saw a familiar date. I quickly realized the similarities to another photo I had taken two decades prior, which I had previously posted here this past year as well.

All the photo information is in the caption, but basically that day my dad and I were at the station shooting CN 432 coming into Kitchener with less than two weeks to go before the pending GEXR takeover. The photo I ended-up hovering over on my computer had the same date, which was November 4. That’s when everything came into perspective.
That day in early November 2018, my wife, young daughter and I had stopped at the station to do the same thing as GEXR X580 headed west to Stratford after working the P&H facility at Shantz, east of Kitchener. While the train only had two light units, it was more about the last two decades and the connections this hobby can bring together.
My daughter will never meet her grandfather. But to be chasing history with her, in the same way my dad and I did at the Kitchener station that day long ago, I can now say we all shared the transitions between railway’s 20 years apart.
Realizing this full circle of events with my daughter turned out to be a fitting ending to GEXR operations on the Guelph Subdivision and one that I will be able to tell her about some day.

This was probably the first and only time I’ve seen something like this occur in Kitchener. I had to look back in my notes to remember exactly why a CN caboose was coupled to an LRC coach and a VIA Rail F40PH-2 in front of the station, as it happened more than 25 years ago in February 1994. So from what I could piece together from the notes, that morning’s eastbound VIA train with 6422, had struck a vehicle around Breslau, which is just east of Kitchener. The unit and the first LRC car had received some damage in the collision and they were moved under their own power back to Kitchener and were left on the same track with Kitchener assigned caboose 79401. I believe the LRC coach and 6422 would receive required repairs here prior to being lifted and taken back to Toronto. As well that same afternoon, CN had dispatched GP9RM 4135 to the scene where it would lift the three remaining cars from the passenger train and brought them back to Kitchener to layover. Also of note, CN train 422 had to be held in the siding at Kitchener until the Guelph Subdivision could be re-opened. I have written that it’s consist that day was 2118, 2308, 4102, 4136, 4126 and 4110 with 96 cars.

CP C424 4215 and Algoma Central Railway SD40-2 181 await departure from the Agincourt yard diesel shop while a Helm Leasing unit sits to the right. That morning, Algoma Central Railway SD40-2's 181 and 185 had entered the diesel shop, presumably off a southbound that had come from the MacTier Subdivision. Both units were eventually separated with 181 paired with the aging MLW C424 on possibly the next northbound junk train bound for the MacTier Subdivision.

Goderich-Exeter Railway train 431 with SD40-2's RLHH 3403 and GEXR 3394 highball towards Stratford at Kitchener West. At the same time, GEXR 540 was waiting for them to clear on the Huron Park Spur with RLK 4095 and SLR 3806 light power.
