VIA Rail F40PH-2 6429 is trailing on train #73's tail-end as it climbs the grade at Copetown on the CN Dundas Subdivision. In 1997, the unit was adorned in a special Home Hardware promotional livery, which it stayed in for several years.

Over two decades later the Waterloo Spur is a much different place now being owned by the Region of Waterloo and is a large component of the new ION light rail system. After servicing the line for 20 years, the Goderich-Exeter Railway’s lease of the Guelph Subdivision and related spurs wasn’t renewed, thus CN returned in November 2018. Now, ordered as required for 21:00 CN L566 services Elmira during the week operating on the shared ION trackage during a small window over night. The CN assignment has to be off the ION operated section before the light rail schedule begins to roll again in the early morning hours. However, sometimes the job doesn’t make it back due to any number of factors and ends up timing-out on the line between Elmira and Northfield Drive in Waterloo.

On July 30, 2019 it was reported that CN L566 had ran out of time that morning in Elmira with none other than 4138. The unit and two tankers would sit near the former Uniroyal plant, now Lanxess, for most of the day and evening awaiting a fresh crew to take L566 back to Kitchener later that night. There was no question that after work that day, Elmira was my destination. Now 26 years later, I still felt the same excitement as I had the day of my first cab ride. This time it was the anticipation of once again seeing CN 4138 on the Waterloo Spur so many years later. Upon arrival in Elmira I saw it had its CN noodle proudly re-applied on its long hood exactly as it did in 1993. For a brief period I was that 13-year-old kid again as I photographed 4138 in the same evening lighting as that summer day so long ago. And the best part was that I was able to share it with my wife and young daughter who had come with me. I wasn’t going to take any chances as this time ensuring that all the images were saved on my SLR camera’s memory card…..and on my phone and my wife’s phone, which they thankfully all were. Checked, double-checked and triple-checked….

In the three years that passed since I had my cab ride in 4138, the unit had gone on to become a ‘movie star’. It was chosen to be in the 1997 Canadian comedy “The Wrong Guy” that was filmed primarily around Toronto and area. While the movie didn’t receive much box office success, the unit had had its CN markings removed and became AR Illinois after a fictional shortline that appeared in the film. When the movie was finished, the GP9RM’s return to CN caused quite a stir amongst railfans. Most people didn’t realize it was used in a movie shoot until the film was released. I honestly grew tired of AR 4138 rather quickly and much preferred its original CN wet noodles, as the unit had during my ride. Ironically, even as of 2020 the unit still has its AR Illinois markings on the nose, however they are fading so badly it now looks like ‘AP’ Illinois.

Here, 4138 is viewed still movie fresh as it is seen switching industries in Elmira. At the time, Nutrite, Sulco Chemical and Uniroyal Chemicals were the three main customers serviced by the 15:30 Kitchener Job.

In July 1993 I was invited for my first cab ride by the crew of the 15:30 Kitchener Job. They would be taking a train north to Elmira on the Waterloo Spur, which was only a block away from my house at the time. The crew said they would get me at the crossing as they headed-up. For a 13-year-old kid, there was no greater excitement than knowing that this time I wouldn’t just be watching from the sidelines, but actually on board this day. CN GP9RM 4138 slowly came into view as it led the small train across the two streets ahead of mine. Once the train came to a stop, I climbed aboard before being handed a bottle of cold water as it was an incredibly sweltering afternoon. Rollie, who was the conductor, let me have his seat as we began across my street and towards Uptown Waterloo.

The entire trip lasted about two hours as the job switched Nutrite Feeds and Sulco in Elmira after arriving. I took photos of as much as I could. Seeing things from high in the cab gave a new perspective on the line. The friendly crew even took photos of me in the engineer’s seat as well. So many wonderful memories were made that day, however, in the end that’s all that became of my first cab ride on the spur….just memories. Unfortunately, it was later discovered that the roll of film in the camera wasn’t advancing at the time while the number counter was, giving the illusion of things working properly. It was my first hard lesson in photography, to ensure all equipment was fully functioning and working properly before a shoot.

While time had continued on in the following years, I was always still determined to photograph 4138 on the Waterloo Spur again to somewhat make-up for the photos lost from that day. I had to wait over three years, until September 1996 when CN had assigned 4138 to Kitchener again. On a hazy late summer afternoon, my dad and I followed the 15:30 Job up to Elmira and back. Here, 4138 is seen emerging from a large corn and vegetable field as it approached Scotch Line Road south of Elmira with cars for Nutrite as well as Sulco Chemicals. However, the GP9RM looked a lot different from three years prior as it no longer had any CN logos….

A westbound Amtrak train on the Oakville Subdivision in the evening....it apparently happened once a week for a brief time. Here the short-lived Amtrak "Niagara Rainbow" is seen approaching the Plains Road bridge and Bayview Junction with dead-heading VIA Rail equipment with Amtrak 265 leading to New York. According to a Canadian Rail magazine article from 1996 that has a great detailed history of Amtrak operations in Canada, this train was named as a throwback to the original "Niagara Rainbow" that operated from New York to Detroit via St. Thomas. The 1994 version ran on an overnight schedule from New York City to Toronto northbound. Train 65 departed New York on Fridays only, while southbound 62 departed from Toronto only on Sundays as seen here.

According to the article written by Fred F. Angus, the trains were to have started operations on May 1 1994 and run twice weekly in both directions. However they were delayed until June 1994 and only operated once weekly. Reportedly, this was the only Amtrak service into Canada that did not run on a daily schedule. On September 10, 1995 the "Niagara Rainbow" train service would be discontinued and fade quietly into history once again.

CP 5592 departs Coakley siding on the Galt Subdivision with sister SD40-2's 5686 and 5659 after meeting 5565 east. During the St. Lawrence & Hudson (STLH) era in Ontario, most of CP's mainline trains were powered by mainly SD40's and SD40-2's with aging four-axle MLW's scattered throughout as well.

During 1994, CN had acquired 24 SD40-2’s from Union Pacific, that were originally numbered UP 4090-4102, B4103, 4104, 4106-4114. CN quickly temporarily renumbered them by changing the first number to a ‘6 from 4’ to cycle them into service. During an early summer morning, four GP40's lead an eastbound CN train approaching the former Snake Road walk bridge (now named Beth Jacob Court). The units included; 9635, 9302, EMDX 201 and 9XXX. GP40 201 is no stranger to the Oakville Subdivision as it had operated as GO Transit 726 prior to becoming part of the Electro-Motive lease fleet. Originally it was built in January 1967 as Chicago Rock Island & Pacific 381.

CN 385 with 2402, 2632 and 2513 heads westward through Paris to work at Paris West after following the weed spraying train 999. It appears I should have followed this train west at the time....

An eastbound CN business train powered by CN GP9RM's 7082 and 7083 is slowly departing Kitchener, revealing the CN local assigned units and cabooses at the time. They included; CN GP9RM's 7031, 7030 and cabooses 79817 and 79513 seen in evening light across from the VIA Rail station.

A Cherrey Bus Lines chartered bus unloads passengers are who are seen boarding a waiting CN eastbound powered by very clean CN GP9RM's 7082 and 7083. Bringing-up the rear was car Sandford Fleming. There seems to be no information as to why this CN business train was in Kitchener this day, however hopefully someone out there knows more information they can share on it. It was certainly neat to witness passengers boarding a train on the opposite side of the VIA Rail station so many years ago now.

It's a Sunday evening in Kitchener and VIA Rail train #689 is arriving at the station with 6413 west and the platform has several people awaiting it's arrival. To the left on one track are CN GP9RM's 7030, 7031 as well as cabooses 79817 and 79513. To the left of them are several CN lettered passenger coaches and CN GP9RM's 7082 and 7083 on the head-end. My notes only indicate this train as an extra east, however a bus soon arrived and passengers filed onto these cars eventually departing Kitchener at 18:15 heading east to Toronto.

GMDD SW1001 117 is seen at the MacMillan yard diesel shop ready to return to the General Motors Diesel Division plant in London. Presumably, it is already in the consist of CN 421 with SD40 5143, which will take it the back way to London via the Guelph Subdivision after having some type of work completed at the MacMillan yard shop. A southbound 400-series train is at West Toronto about to complete it's journey on the MacTier Subdivision before entering the North Toronto Subdivision to Toronto yard. The consist included; SD40-2's 5790 and 5781, with the trailing unit in the big multi-mark scheme.

The CN West Toronto station as seen on a spring afternoon in April 1994. Vandals and time were slowly taking their toll on the aging structure and it would eventually be demolished in 1999.
