On this Thursday evening I had biked down to the Kitchener yard and saw that the CN 15:30 Job was nowhere to be found. They were likely still down the Huron Park Spur at the Budd Plant doing their work, so I waited at the yard for hopefully 421 from MacMillan yard to arrive. In due course a headlight appeared to the east and it became clear that in keeping with routine it was 421 and it was taking the siding. With its pending lift of new loaded car frames still on the Huron Park Spur and the eastbound International coming soon, the RTC had no choice but to put 9473 west in the hole at Kitchener.

I waited at Lancaster Street and soon enough 421 slowly rolled to a stop so the conductor could uncouple their set-off from the train. I snapped a photo and could see they had on four units tonight and they had quite a long train as well. While taking it all in I saw the engineer wave at me and lean out. “Hey, you want to go for a ride? We’re going to be here for a while.” I nodded “yes” and parked my bike by the laundromat building beside the yard. The engineer pointed to the front and I climbed aboard the GP40-2L(W). Walking-up into the cab and through all the doors, the first thing I realized was how much bigger the inside was compared to GP9RM 4134 that Dennis Fleet let me up in three weeks prior. “You can sit down over there,” he said pointing to the conductor’s seat. He slowly inched the train ahead to the crossing and waited until the gates came before throttling-up 9473 ahead to clear the switch for the conductor. As we crossed Lancaster Street I remember looking down at the stopped traffic thinking how the crew could see everything from up here and just being in general awe of what was happening. I asked the engineer if I could take a couple photos from the cab and we briefly talked. In no time at all we had reversed the set-off into the yard. While we waited for the conductor to finish uncoupling the engineer asked “you want to take over for a minute for this next move?” I don’t honestly remember my response but in a matter of seconds I was sitting in his seat in front of 9473’s controls. With the engineer standing behind me giving me instructions I slowly notched the consist ahead after the conductor had climbed aboard the trailing unit. Once we got to the crossing, he took back over for their final move to clear the power for the 15:30 Kitchener Job, which was getting closer to arriving with their lift. Once we had rolled to a stop he asked, “do you want a picture of you sitting in my chair?” I handed him my camera and he climbed down to get a photo of me waving from the cab. He climbed back-up and gave me back my camera with me giving him a big thank you as I headed back to my waiting bike. The crew headed-over to the Dairy Queen, which was next-door to the laundromat, as they still had some time on their hands. I remember biking home later that evening thinking that I was fortunate that the engineer took that photo because my dad was never going to believe what had just happened when I tell him the story. All I can say is that the 1990’s were awesome.

The sun is just dipping below the horizon as the CN 15:30 Kitchener Job with GP9RM 4134 is returning from Elmira, Ontario on the Waterloo Spur. The crew had lifted two CN cylindrical hoppers from Nutrite in Elmira and is viewed approaching John Street in Waterloo returning to Kitchener during a spring evening.

With their train assembled, engineer Dennis Fleet waits to depart the Kitchener yard for Elmira, Ontario with CN 4134, three hoppers and the crew’s caboose on the tail-end. I would bike towards Waterloo following the train en route along the Waterloo Spur, hoping to catch it at a crossing or two before heading for home.

CN L568 with 4125, 4130 and 9416 leads a lengthy train as it heads down the Huron Park Spur approaching the Stirling Avenue bridge in Kitchener. The train was going to the interchange with Canadian Pacific at South Junction. March 20, 2022.

As the winter slowly gives way to spring, Waterloo Central Railway 1012, former CN 1437, nee-CN 1012, is viewed during its inaugural run after repainting on a promotional excursion north of St. Jacobs, Ontario at Mile 9.87 of the Waterloo Spur at Scotch Line Road.

Some nights when I went down to the yard to watch trains are more memorable than others. Looking back almost 30 years later I can safely say this one I still remember well.

That evening, a friend and I had biked down to the Kitchener yard to see if there were any trains around. We were in luck as the CN 15:30 Job had just returned to the yard from the Huron Park Spur with their train loaded with newly built car frames from the Budd Plant. After setting them off, CN GP9RM 4134 ran light back to the west end of the yard where it then coupled to three waiting hoppers loaded with fertilizer for Nutrite in Elmira. The same engineer had seen me a lot over the past month photographing them, however this was the first time he leaned out and began talking to us. He had some time before they departed the yard. He said his name was Dennis and then asked me if I wanted to be an engineer someday. He went on to tell a story that when he was a kid, he saw his first steam engine and from then on, he knew that he had always wanted to be a hogger. Then he asked my friend and I “Have you ever been up in one of these?” To which we replied a firm “no.” Then Dennis pointed to the front of 4134 and asked “Well would you like to?” And just like that we climbed-up and found ourselves inside the cab of 4134 with Dennis giving us a tour of his office. I was beyond excited at this recent turn of events and was just trying to take it all in. However, it didn’t last long as the conductor began getting back on and they were ready to go north to Elmira on the Waterloo Spur. We thanked Dennis for letting us up and began the trek biking towards home. Our topic of conversation on the way was no doubt about what we had just experienced.

Here CN 4134 is viewed coupling to its waiting hoppers for Elmira in the yard with Dennis looking back from his window. That spring, Nutrite was receiving many cars of fertilizer and the 15:30 Job would usually take-up a few at a time along with any tank cars for Sulco or Uniroyal Chemicals.

The former Waterloo, Ontario train station situated at Regina Street was constructed during 1910 to replace the original wooden structure. It was initially owned by the Grand Trunk Railway, which was later acquired by Canadian National. The station saw its last regular passenger trains during 1934; however following that it served as a departure location for Canadian troops heading off to fight in WWI and WWII.

During 1992 and 1993 I would often bike there and watch the CN 15:30 Yard Job go by it in the evenings if they headed to Elmira on the Waterloo Spur. By that time the building was just being used as storage by the nearby Ontario Seed Company and was basically all boarded–up. A far cry from its former glory days, to me it radiated history including the aging brick work on its platform that my bike bumped over every time I rolled across it.

In spring 1993, I was finally able to photograph CN trains going by it. Here, conductor Rollie protects Regina Street as CN 4134 prepares to cross as it leads the 15:30 Yard Job north to Elmira during a spring evening with five cars and a caboose.

A Saturday morning in 1993 finds CN’s Stuart Street yard shop tracks full of units awaiting their next assignments. The units included from left to right were; SW1200RM’s 7103, 7104, 7307, 7314, GP9RM’s 4127, 4136, 4101, SD40-2(W)’s 5299 and 5310. Also, around the shop facility that day were SW1200RS’s 1355, 1369 and 1375. As well, SW1200RS’s 1359 and 1360 were observed switching the yard. I also have in my notes that there were five active CN cabooses around the yard; 79648, 79853, 79473, 79783 and 79482.

On this late April evening I was at home in Waterloo when I heard an approaching train horn off in the distance. Thinking it sounded more like CN coming from Kitchener rather than CP, I made the quick decision to get on my bike and head towards the Waterloo Spur. Thanks to the days getting longer I had more opportunities for photos if CN went to Elmira after returning with the loaded car frames from the Budd Plant in Kitchener on the Huron Park Spur. As I neared the John Street crossing I could hear the distinctive sound of the CN local slowly making its way along the spur. Having a bit more time I decided to venture to William Street as I wanted get a photo there for the first time.

Here, the CN 15:30 Job with GP9RM 4134 is viewed leading two hoppers, three tank cars and caboose 79443 as it approaches William Street in Waterloo at 20:00 just after the sun had dipped below the horizon. The two hoppers were for Nutrite Feeds in Elmira and the three smaller tankers were for Sulco Chemicals.

One year ago exactly, CN 4138 is viewed leading L568 through Baden, Ontario during a perfect winter afternoon heading west on the Guelph Subdivision. One year later, and CN 4138 is once again assigned to Kitchener and has been observed leading L568 making scenes such as this possible, although the sun hasn’t been as co-operative as in 2022.

With the arrival of spring, I was able to once again bike around and explore the railway lines around Waterloo. Unlike the previous year, this time I had a new camera and wanted to explore further into Kitchener. During the early evenings I would often follow the Waterloo Spur to Kitchener and wait for any trains at the VIA Rail station or at the yard by Lancaster Street. While the first few trips didn’t turn up anything, one night while waiting at the station I saw a headlight come into view further to the east. I quickly biked down to the yard and waited at Lancaster Street while the train slowly came closer. This would be the first CN train I ever photographed at the Kitchener yard.

Here, CN train 421 is seen after taking the siding in Kitchener on April 15, 1993. On this spring evening, CN GP40-2L(W) 9527 and a SD40 haven’t made good time across the Guelph Subdivision. They will eventually meet the eastbound International with VIA Rail 6446 after they lift several flatcars loaded with new car frames made at the Budd plant in Kitchener.

$In spring 1993, I had gotten my brand-new Kodak camera from Bent’s Camera in downtown Waterloo. I was excited as with the arrival of spring my bike was now out of storage and with a new camera of my own I was able to photograph trains without having to rely on the family’s older camera. All I had to do next was to find a train. On that Easter Monday, the CN 15:30 Kitchener Job had gone to Elmira on the Waterloo Spur during the afternoon; however, I missed them heading up. <br> I made sure to catch them on their return trip and if memory serves, even that was a close call. As I only managed to grab a going away shot of CN caboose 79443 as the small train curved back to Kitchener beside the Lens Mill building in Waterloo. In the background is the switch for the Roger Street spur, which ran a short distance to Imperial Refractories that manufactured boilers. By 1993, this small spur no longer saw rail service, however it was still intact.$

[Editors note: While not to quality standards, we're still working to improve this. This is one of the last movements or the last on the CPR Waterloo sub in Waterloo and is quite historic. These would move at night for the last move not long after] In 1993 I began really taking an interest in the railways that operated near my house in Waterloo, Ontario. I grew-up on John Street and both CN and CP crossed it on opposite sides of King Street. CN ran through on their Waterloo Spur and CP reached the city with the Waterloo Subdivision. Growing-up the CN line was the closest so naturally I gravitated to it when I first really started watching trains. The CP line always seemed to be less active than I remembered when I was younger, however its industrial trackage in the city always intrigued me, especially the long stretch where it ran down the middle of Caroline Street. I had no idea about railway operations or when trains ran to Waterloo. In my mind a train had the potential to just show-up at any time. So, in early 1993, while it was still snowy and cold, I had to do all my exploring on foot as my trusty bike was still put away for the winter. I would often follow the tracks on walks from my street to downtown Waterloo.<br>At the time, Waterloo was barely holding onto its roots in the industrial and manufacturing sectors as change had already arrived. The effects of a deepening recession in the early 1990’s was evident, and many local industries were feeling the impacts. In 1992, the massive Seagram's distillery had ceased production and by 1993 was slowly being torn down. In November of that year, Canadian Pacific had filed an application with the Canadian Transportation Agency to abandon the operation of a section of the Waterloo Subdivision between mileage 13.00 in Kitchener and mileage 15.8 in Waterloo. Canbar Inc, which manufactured large mouldings made from fibreglass was CP’s last active customer in Waterloo. They had opposed the railway’s abandonment application citing possible loss of jobs within its business and other expenses they would have for movement of their wood products and fibreglass tank covers. In early 1993, Canbar Inc had a large contract they were fulfilling with the city of Winnipeg to manufacture several large mouldings for a sewage treatment plant that could only go by rail. <br>So here I was on that winter afternoon looking for trains on a weekend when nearing the Canbar Inc. plant I saw something that caught my eye. I was almost in disbelief at the sight of actual railcars loaded behind the fence with these large loads. These were the first cars I had ever seen set-off here and unknown to me, they would be some of the last with the pending abandonment looming. Luckily, on this walk I had come prepared. I didn’t yet own my own camera; however I had borrowed my mom’s small disc film camera and had taken it with me. Also, thankfully in front of the Canbar Inc. property was a municipal parking lot that had a conveniently placed snow bank, more like a big mountain at the time. I climbed up to try and get a decent view of the car sitting there without the fence obstructing my view. I pointed the small thin camera and clicked its shutter. The recently restored image seen here is what was produced. At the time I was just excited to photograph a CP Rail freight car in Waterloo. As 1993 would progress, so would my knowledge of what I was actually photographing. Now looking back 30 years later I’m extremely grateful I climbed that snow bank.

CSX train R320 with CSX GP38 2012 and CSX SD40-2 8060 with C&O caboose #904121 are paused by the iconic former CASO station in St. Thomas during a humid August 1993 day. The train is seen meeting CSX R321 with CSX C40-8W’s 7737 and 7694 with C&O caboose 904125, much to the delight of those attending the weekend St. Thomas railway day's festivities.
