Caption: Yeah, it is only March but what a warm and hazy day it was. Nice enough that I drove over to the CN yard before going to work (this is a Friday) to see what was going on. The 6 or 8 CN Geeps based here appeared to be almost all out on assignment, you could say; and I was about to leave when this Chessie transfer came in from the States. It was rare for me to see one at CN in the Falls, and I do not have any idea how often they came over. Maybe in the night, maybe while I was at work, I dunno. Perhaps someone on the group can enlighten us. C&O 3584 and WM 4355 are seen emerging out from under the shadow of the Victoria Av overpass. Check "time machine" to see what is left of this once-bustling CN facility. (Hint: Its gone)

Wow AW, you come up with some amazing images my friend!
All but a memory now, but soon to be a bustling layover yard for Metrolinx.
Thanks, m’lad……..glad you like the stuff…so I’ll let you know I will cease posting in another week………but just for September as I am going on vacation.:o)
No problem..i am sure its a well deserved holiday..
I did not see that the vacation time was approved..Mr Mooney.
Sorry. Do you mind if I take off for a month, Mr. Snake?
Haha, take two months AW..We know that snake2 is gonna miss you.
Taking a vacation ..from what? His life is a vacation.
LOL..i am guilty of the same thing snake2
Excellent photo !
Today; that is an industrial brownfield.
Cyanamid, left rear of the picture, was one of the dirtiest plants in Ontario.
I don’t know if there were any operations still on going in 1979.
First, nice image.
WM 4355 is barely 2 months old.
But except for a detour there is no reason for this train to be here, at all. At this point, I was working in the running trades either in Chatham or Sarnia. I am not aware of any transfer runs that were taking place at this time, in Niagara Falls. I cannot find any notation about the cause for a detour in this timeframe.
The only transfer runs that were established post-Conrail were between Buffalo and Ft Erie. So I think you caught yourself a one-time move, whatever it entails.
Thanks, BEM’r. It is a great asset to have knowledgeable guys like you overseeing some of the posted photos. This ‘transfer type’ move had always puzzled me.
Can’t believe that other than the 2 tracks on the left leading to the GO/VIA ex-CN Niagara Falls passenger station ( one of which appears to be out of service), everything else is gone ! And today, no freight traffic across the Whirlpool Rapids Double Deck bridge. If it weren’t for Amtrak, this bridge would probably be closed with vehicle traffic on the lower deck diverted up river to Rainbow Bridge, and become simply a rusting hulk like its neighbouring CP Rail ex-CASO ex-NYC ex-MCRR rail bridge. Thanks Arnold for recording this “ better days” view.
John
Well John, I am glad you are enjoying going thru all these postings on RP. I agree it is incredible how railroading has all but dried up in the Falls, save for the AMTK once each way daily. Even with the crowds we saw on GO Weekends last year that service has been cut back as you noted in an email. That “rusting hulk” you referred to has been left for posterity when it was discovered in 2002 it was going to cost $25 Million to remove it!!!! Talk of a ‘dedicated truck bridge’ in 2004 ended up being just that…talk. So there it rusts.
Its a darn good thing we have photos and memories.
