Caption: With the sun quickly setting, 1733 and 1730 pass through Arntfield (part of Rouyn-Noranda since 2002) on their way back to Ontario. Interestingly, this line between Swastika, ON and Rouyn-Noranda, QC is, on paper, operated as the Nipissing Central Railway (NCR). The NCR was provincially chartered in 1902 as an interurban streetcar system that connected several communities in Northern Ontario. With the towns growing, the railway was granted a federal charter five years later and then, in 1911, the provincially chartered Temiskaming and Northern Ontario (T&NO - the predecessor to the Ontario Northland Railway) purchased the NCR. So when the T&NO built the line between Swastika and Rouyn-Noranda, it was operated under the federally chartered NCR to avoid any complications that could be associated with crossing between two provinces.
